TikTok vs Instagram comes down to one question: do you want to be found by people who don't follow you yet, or sell to people who already know you? TikTok is built to push a new video to strangers through its For You feed, so a small account can reach far past its follower count. Instagram now does the same with Reels, but it still leans on your existing followers and it is where more people go to buy. This page compares the two on reach, search and sales, with 2025 and 2026 numbers you can check.

The short version: the two apps look more alike every year. Instagram copied TikTok's full-screen video and its search-first hashtag rules; TikTok copied Instagram's photo posts and shopping. The real differences are in distribution and money, and that is where your choice should be made.

Grouped bar chart comparing the adult age mix of TikTok and Instagram. Both skew young: about 31 percent of each app's 18-plus advertising audience is 18 to 24 and about a third is 25 to 34, with the shares nearly identical across every age band.
TikTok's and Instagram's adult audiences are close to identical by age. Data: DataReportal, January 2025 (18+ advertising audience, excludes teens).

Who is on each app

Both apps are big and both skew young. Where they differ is how deep they reach into the adult population of a country like the United States.

In the US, about half of adults use Instagram and about 37 in 100 use TikTok, per Pew Research Center's Americans' Social Media Use 2025 (published November 2025). Among teens aged 13 to 17 the gap closes: 63% use TikTok and 61% use Instagram, from Pew's teens and social media facts (July 2025).

By age, the two are almost the same. On both apps roughly six in ten adults are 18 to 34, per DataReportal's January 2025 figures. The chart above shows the bars sitting on top of each other. So "TikTok is for kids, Instagram is for grown-ups" is out of date. If your customers are adults, both apps have them.

How a new account gets seen

This is the biggest real difference. TikTok's For You feed is what you see when you open the app, and TikTok has said it recommends videos to people who don't follow you based on how each video performs, not on your follower count. A brand new account can land on a stranger's screen the same day. Instagram shows you a home feed of accounts you already follow first, then mixes in recommended Reels. Reels reach non-followers too, but your followers are still the starting point.

Our own numbers show what "reach past your followers" looks like on TikTok. We measured 58 creators that TikTok search surfaced across six niches in September 2026, then divided each creator's median views per post by their follower count.

Horizontal bar chart of TikTok median plays per follower by account size. Accounts under 10k followers get about 1.0 plays per follower per post, 10k to 100k get 0.30, 100k to 1M get 0.07, and accounts over 1M get 0.035.
Smaller TikTok accounts reach a bigger multiple of their following. Data: 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search, September 2026.

Accounts under 10,000 followers had a median of about one play per follower on a typical post, meaning the video reached the equivalent of their whole following and then some through the For You feed. Big accounts over a million followers sat near 0.035, because a giant follower base is hard to beat with views. Small accounts get the biggest lift.

Instagram does not publish a matching plays-per-follower number. The closest public figure is Socialinsider's Reels study of 140,000 Reels from the first half of 2026, which reports a reach rate (unique accounts reached as a share of followers) of about 9.8% for accounts of 1,000 to 5,000 followers, falling to 5% for accounts over 100,000. Treat these as two different rulers: TikTok plays count views, which can repeat, while Instagram reach counts unique people. They are not the same measurement, so a straight number-to-number comparison does not exist.

People use both apps as search engines, but only one shows you the demand. TikTok publishes search numbers through Creator Search Insights, its free tool that lists what people type into TikTok search and how many searches a topic gets in a week. It also treats the words you say out loud and the text in your caption as searchable, so a video can rank for a phrase you never typed as a hashtag.

Instagram has leaned into keyword search too, and captions now matter more than tags. But Instagram does not publish search-volume data for creators, so you are guessing at demand. If getting found in search is your plan, TikTok hands you the map. Our TikTok search statistics page collects the figures, and how TikTok search works explains the ranking signals TikTok has published.

Formats: what you can post

Both apps take short video, long video, photo carousels, Stories and live streams. The overlap is nearly total now that TikTok has photo posts and Instagram has long Reels.

TikTok's photo mode, or slideshow, turns a set of images into a swipeable post with music, and it gets its own slot in the For You feed. TikTok also has Stories and LIVE. Instagram's strengths are the polished feed grid, Stories with stickers and links, and carousels, which Socialinsider found now out-reach Reels for accounts over 50,000 followers. Pick the app whose native format matches what you make: raw video and voice lean TikTok, designed photos and a tidy grid lean Instagram.

Money: payouts and selling

The two apps pay creators in different ways, and they sell in very different ways.

TikTok runs the Creator Rewards Program, an open payout for videos over one minute. To join you need to be 18 or older, have at least 10,000 followers and 100,000 video views in the last 30 days, and be in an eligible country, per TikTok's Creator Academy. Instagram has no equivalent open program; its creator bonuses have been invite-only and often paused, so most Instagram creators earn through brand deals, subscriptions and gifts rather than a platform payout. Both offer live gifts and paid subscriptions. Our make money on TikTok guide covers the payout math.

Selling is where TikTok has pulled ahead. TikTok Shop keeps the whole purchase inside the app and generated about $64 billion in global sales in 2025, per widely reported figures. Instagram removed its dedicated Shop tab in early 2024, and most product tags now send shoppers to your own website rather than an in-app checkout. If you want people to buy without leaving the app, TikTok is built for it today; if you want to drive traffic to your own store, Instagram's tags do that job.

Ads, hashtags and reposting

On ads, both let you put money behind an organic post. TikTok's version is Spark Ads, which boosts a real video, including one from another creator with their permission, and keeps the likes and comments. Instagram boosts a Reel or post from the app or Ads Manager. Spark Ads tend to feel more native because they run as the original post.

Hashtags now work almost the same on both. TikTok rewards 3 to 5 tags placed in the caption, and Instagram cut its old limit of 30 down to 5 in late 2025. On both apps the keywords in your caption and what you say now matter more than a wall of tags.

Watch the watermark before you cross-post

If you save a TikTok and post the same file to Reels, TikTok's logo and username are burned into the video. Instagram has said it gives less reach to video that is visibly recycled from another app, and the watermark is the giveaway. Export a clean copy without the watermark before you post it to Reels, or shoot the clip again. The same rule runs the other way: a Reels watermark on a TikTok looks just as recycled.

What creators report

Published numbers tell you the shape; creators tell you the feel. Their posts are not proof, but the pattern is consistent. In r/InstagramMarketing, the June 2026 thread "TikTok vs Instagram for Personal Brands: my experience after 5k" describes TikTok bringing faster reach from strangers while Instagram held a warmer, more loyal following. In r/SocialMediaManagers, "TikTok vs Instagram Reels in 2026" (April 2026) reports managers running the same clip on both and seeing wider raw views on TikTok but steadier saves and DMs on Instagram.

Sellers lean the other way. The r/ecommerce thread "Hot take: Instagram is better than TikTok for closing customers" (November 2025) argues that TikTok wins attention but Instagram wins the sale, because buyers there already trust the brand. That matches the split in the data: TikTok for reach, Instagram for the relationship.

Which one to pick

Pick TikTok if you are starting from zero, you want strangers to find you fast, you sell a product people buy on impulse, or search traffic is your plan. The For You feed and Creator Search Insights are made for you.

Pick Instagram if your audience already follows you, you sell through your own website, your work is photo-led or design-led, or your buyers and partners expect to see a polished grid before they trust you.

Do both if you can make one clip serve two apps without looking recycled. Shoot vertical, keep it clean of watermarks, lead with a hook, and post the video where it fits each app's habits. Most small businesses that win use TikTok to get found and Instagram to close and stay in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok or Instagram better in 2026?

Neither is better for everyone. TikTok is better for getting found by new people and for in-app selling, because the For You feed pushes videos to strangers and TikTok Shop keeps checkout inside the app. Instagram is better if your followers already know you, your work is photo-led, or you send buyers to your own website. Many small businesses use TikTok to get found and Instagram to close.

Is TikTok better than Instagram for small business?

For reaching new customers and selling on impulse, usually yes. TikTok's feed shows your videos to people who don't follow you, its Creator Search Insights tool shows what people search for, and TikTok Shop lets people buy without leaving the app. Instagram is stronger for repeat customers, brand deals and driving traffic to your own store, since its product tags mostly link out.

What is the difference between TikTok and Instagram Reels?

Reels is Instagram's copy of TikTok's short vertical video. The clips look alike, but the distribution differs: TikTok's whole app is the For You feed of recommended video, while Reels is one part of Instagram, which still shows your followers' posts first. TikTok also gives creators public search-demand data; Instagram does not.

Which app reaches new people better?

TikTok, especially for small accounts. In our September 2026 sample, TikTok accounts under 10,000 followers got a median of about one play per follower on a post, meaning the For You feed carried the video past their whole following. Instagram's Reels do reach non-followers, but Socialinsider found the reach rate for tiny accounts is under 10% of followers, and followers come first.

Can I post the same video on TikTok and Instagram?

Yes, but export a clean copy first. If you save a TikTok, its logo and username are burned into the file, and Instagram has said it gives less reach to video that looks recycled from another app. Save or re-export the clip without any watermark before you post it to Reels, and the same in reverse.

Which pays creators more, TikTok or Instagram?

TikTok has an open payout, the Creator Rewards Program, for videos over one minute once you have 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days. Instagram has no open program; its bonuses have been invite-only and often paused, so Instagram creators mostly earn from brand deals, subscriptions and gifts. Both offer live gifts and paid subscriptions.
