Does TikTok Promote work? It does the one thing TikTok sells it for: it shows your video to more people, and the price starts at about $3 a day. It does not do the things most people hope it will. The views it buys do not count toward Creator Rewards, they usually stop when the money stops, and a video nobody watched for free rarely does better with a budget behind it.

TikTok Promote is the boost button inside the app. Below: what it costs, what a promoted view is worth, what TikTok and creators say about your reach afterwards, how it compares with Spark Ads and Ads Manager, and a short list for deciding whether to pay. Every rule is checked against TikTok's own pages and at least one guide from 2025 or 2026.

What TikTok Promote is

TikTok describes Promote as "an in-app advertising tool to help you amplify your TikTok videos and LIVEs". You open one of your videos, tap Promote, pick a goal, pick an audience, set a budget and a number of days, and pay. The video then appears in other people's For You feeds as an ad, with a Sponsored label under your name while the promotion runs. You must be 18 or older. To promote a LIVE you also need 1,000 followers.

For the audience, you either let TikTok choose or set it yourself. TikTok's playbook lists the custom options as gender, age, interests and location, down to state and city. That is the whole menu; customer lists live in Ads Manager.

Not every video qualifies. Guides from September 2025 and August 2026 agree: the video must be public, it must use your own sound or a track from TikTok's Commercial Music Library, and it cannot be a Duet or a Stitch. When the Promote button is greyed out, the sound is almost always why.

TikTok's payment page lists coins, a credit or debit card, a Promote balance, an Ads Manager balance if you have linked the two, and GMV Pay for sellers spending TikTok Shop earnings. Coins are the in-app purchase route, and the same page says extra fees apply when they are bought through Apple Pay on iOS or Google Pay in the EU. A card skips that cut. Unspent budget returns to your Promote balance.

What TikTok Promote costs

TikTok has not published a minimum budget on any page we could reach. Its playbook says you can run a promotion "for as brief as one day with a minimal investment required" and stops there. The guides fill in the numbers and agree: about $3 a day at the low end, up to $1,000 a day, for 1 to 7 days. Stackmatix (September 2026), Sprout Social (September 2025) and NapoleonCat all give $3. MegaDigital says the floor moves with your region, between $3 and $10.

What $3 buys is where the sources part ways.

BudgetMegaDigital's estimate (Aug 2026)Stackmatix's rate (Sep 2026)
$3800 to 1,500 views200 to 375 impressions
$103,000 to 5,000 views670 to 1,250 impressions
$5015,000 to 25,000 views3,300 to 6,250 impressions

MegaDigital's figures are its published estimates. The Stackmatix column is worked out from its stated Promote CPM of $8 to $15 per 1,000 impressions, which it says runs 50 to 100 percent above Ads Manager. Neither publishes its method. Checked 22 September 2026.

The columns differ by three to four times, and that gap is the honest answer on price: nobody outside TikTok knows your rate in advance. It depends on your country, audience settings, goal and time of year. Run one video for one day at $3 and read the cost per result on the promotion's own screen.

For scale, Ads Manager asks for $50 a day per campaign and $20 per ad group, per Aimers (January 2026) and Stackmatix. Promote is the only way to spend less on TikTok.

What a promoted view is, and why it does not pay you

A promoted view is a view TikTok delivered because you paid for it. Promote reports them on its own results screen, with likes, comments, shares, followers and clicks from the promotion and the age, gender and location of who saw it. Promoted views also add to the public view count, which is why a promoted video looks bigger than it is.

For anyone in the Creator Rewards Program, TikTok's scheme that pays for views on videos over a minute long, promoted views do not count. TikTok's How rewards work page defines qualified views as unique views from the For You feed and excludes fraud, paid views, disliked views, views under 5 seconds, promoted views and artificial views. Shortimize (December 2025), Creators Agency (July 2026) and Neal Schaffer (August 2026) quote the same list. You cannot pay $3 for views and earn any of it back; the Creator Rewards guide covers what does count.

A related trap: Business Accounts are not eligible for Creator Rewards, and some people switch because they think ads need one. Promote works on a Personal Account for anyone 18 or older.

Does Promote hurt your reach afterwards?

TikTok says no. Its For Business blog post "3 common questions about TikTok's Promote feature" states that using Promote "doesn't impact the number of views that you get on your other, non-promoted videos", and that your organic videos perform independently of your promotion. That is TikTok's position, and it has published nothing that contradicts it.

Creators keep reporting the opposite. A June 2026 thread on r/TikTokLounge, "Shadowbanned after 1 million view and DO NOT USE PROMOTE", describes views collapsing after the creator paid to boost a video that had already gone big. An April 2026 thread on r/TikTokMonetizing, "Does using TikTok ads hurt your organic reach later?", and a May 2026 thread on r/content_marketing, "Does ads actually hurt your TikTok account?", collect mixed answers: some saw a drop, some saw nothing, a few saw a lift. A February 2026 thread on r/SocialMediaMarketing, "Spark Ads killed my organic growth on TikTok", says the same about the Ads Manager version. These are single-account reports, not tests, and none can separate paying from the normal fall after a big video.

Marketers writing in 2026 mostly side with TikTok and differ on why people feel a drop. Sagum (February 2026) says paid and organic run on separate tracks with no penalty. Ewanity argues a promoted video sets a new normal, so the next unpaid one looks like a failure. Darkroom (September 2026) says to treat Promote as paid distribution and any organic lift as a bonus. A fourth idea, that promoted viewers skip fast and weak watch time drags the video down, is plausible and unproven; TikTok has not confirmed it.

One part is checkable. After the promotion, compare the video's average watch time with your last five unpaid videos in analytics. If it sits well below, the audience TikTok bought was not your audience.

Promote vs Spark Ads vs Ads Manager

Promote is the small, in-app option. Spark Ads and regular in-feed ads both run through TikTok Ads Manager, a separate website with its own account. The differences that decide it for most people are minimum spend and where the likes end up.

The choice comes down to whether you will spend $50 a day and learn Ads Manager. If yes, Spark Ads give far more control over the same post; the Spark Ads guide walks through it. If no, Promote is the only door open.

When Promote makes sense, and when to skip it

Pay when:

  • The video is already doing well for free. Watch time and shares are above your normal. TikTok's playbook says to promote your strongest content, not test weak ideas.
  • You have a local offer. Promote can target a state or a city, so a shop, class or event reaches people who can turn up.
  • You want to test a link. Set the goal to website visits, spend $3 to $10 for a day, and see whether viewers click.
  • You are close to 1,000 followers and want to go LIVE. TikTok's playbook suggests this. Expect many of those followers not to return.

Skip it when:

  • The video is dead. Few views, short watch time, no shares. Money shows it to more people who also leave.
  • You want the follower number for its own sake. Followers who arrive through a Sponsored label rarely return.
  • You are in the Creator Rewards Program and the goal is income. None of the views you buy qualify.
  • You would pay with coins on an iPhone. Use a card, or the app store fee eats part of your $3 first.
The mistake that wastes the most money

Paying to promote a video that is not doing well on its own. Promote does not fix a video; it multiplies it. If ten in a hundred watched to the end for free, about ten in a hundred will when you pay, and you have paid for the ninety who left. Promote your best video from the last month, not your newest.

An agent connected to TikTok's search can pull those twenty, with their likes, comments, shares and lengths, and set your video next to them in a minute. If yours sits in the bottom half on every count, keep the $3 and make the next video instead. The views guide covers what to change, and the engagement rate calculator shows a normal rate at your follower count.

Frequently asked questions

Is TikTok Promote worth it?

Only for a specific job. It is worth $3 to $10 to push a video that is already doing well, to reach people in one city for a local offer, or to test whether viewers click a link. It is not worth anything for a video that flopped on its own, and it does not earn money back for anyone in the Creator Rewards Program because promoted views are excluded from qualified views.

How much does TikTok Promote cost?

TikTok has not published a minimum. Guides from 2025 and 2026 agree on about $3 a day, up to $1,000 a day, for 1 to 7 days, with the floor varying by region. What $3 buys is disputed: one 2026 guide estimates 800 to 1,500 views, another quotes a rate of $8 to $15 per 1,000 impressions, which works out to a few hundred. Run one day at $3 and read the cost per result TikTok shows you.

Do promoted views count for the Creator Rewards Program?

No. TikTok's How rewards work page defines qualified views as unique views from the For You feed and excludes paid views, promoted views, disliked views, views under 5 seconds, fraud and artificial views. Promoted views still add to the public view count on the video; they just do not pay.

Does promoting a video hurt your reach on TikTok?

TikTok says it does not. Its For Business blog states that using Promote does not affect the views on your other, non-promoted videos. Creators on Reddit in 2026 report drops after promoting, and marketers offer explanations from inflated expectations to weak watch time from viewers who never asked to see you. None of that is confirmed by TikTok. Compare the promoted video's average watch time with your last five unpaid videos to see whether the audience it bought was your audience.

Do you still get views after the promotion ends?

The paid views stop when the budget runs out or the days end, and the Sponsored label comes off. Any views after that are organic, and they depend on how the video performed with the people who saw it. A video that held attention during the promotion can keep going; one that people skipped usually goes quiet. The promotion's results screen stays available so you can see the split.

Can you pay for TikTok Promote with coins?

Yes. TikTok's payment page lists coins alongside a credit or debit card, a Promote balance, an Ads Manager balance and GMV Pay for TikTok Shop sellers. Coins bought through Apple Pay on iOS or Google Pay in the EU carry extra fees, so a card is cheaper. Unspent budget returns to your Promote balance, and TikTok says iOS users who paid through Apple Pay cannot withdraw it.
