A TikTok Spark Ad is an ordinary TikTok post turned into an ad. You pick a video that is already on TikTok, your own or a creator's who has given you an authorization code, and pay through TikTok Ads Manager to show it to more people. Every like, comment, share and new follower the ad earns stays on the original post after the money stops.
On cost: 2025 and 2026 reports put TikTok ads at about $4 to $13 per 1,000 views and $0.30 to $1.50 per click, and TikTok sets a floor of $50 a day per campaign and $20 a day per ad group. Promote, the boost button inside the app, starts at about $3 a day with far less control. Below: how the code works, how the three options compare, and how to pick the post worth paying for.
What a TikTok Spark Ad is
TikTok's About Spark Ads page describes it as a native ad format built from organic TikTok posts. Instead of uploading an ad video into an ad account, you point Ads Manager at a post that already exists. The ad looks like the post because it is the post: same name, same profile picture, same comments underneath, and viewers can follow the account from the ad.
You can spark your own posts, from an account linked to Ads Manager, or a creator's post if they hand you a code. That second route is why Spark Ads matter to small businesses: a creator's review, boosted from the creator's own account, usually reads better than a brand's ad. Our guide to finding UGC creators covers how to find posts worth sparking.
TikTok's own figures, quoted in a March 2026 Stackmatix guide, claim Spark Ads get a 30% higher completion rate, 142% higher engagement and 43% higher conversion rate than ads built from uploaded video. Those are TikTok's numbers for its own product: a direction, not a promise.
How the Spark Ads code works
The code is TikTok's permission slip: a creator generates it on one video and you paste it into Ads Manager. The creator's steps, as described by Insense (February 2026) and the Archive help centre:
- Once per account: Settings and privacy, Creator tools, switch on Ad settings. The account must be a Creator or Business account, not a personal one (see Business vs Creator account).
- Open the video, tap the three dots, tap Ad settings, switch on Ad authorization.
- Pick how long the permission lasts: 7, 30, 60 or 365 days. 30 is the default.
- Tap Generate code, then Copy code, and send it to the advertiser.
On the advertiser's side, TikTok's Spark Ads creation guide says you add the post with Add post, up to 20 codes at a time, and the remaining authorization period shows under each post. One detail from that page catches people out: a private video becomes public the moment it is used in a campaign, and its privacy cannot change while the ad runs.
The four durations come from 2026 guides (Novoads, July 2026, lists the same four). TikTok's own page says only that you can customise the duration of the code. No source we checked shows an unlimited option. When the period runs out the ad stops, so for a long campaign ask for 365 days and put the real end date in your agreement.
What stays with the post: all of it. TikTok's page states that "all views, comments, shares, likes, and follows gained from boosting the video during the promotion are attributed to your organic posts". If the post is a creator's, the new followers are theirs, not yours.
Spark Ads vs Promote vs regular in-feed ads
TikTok gives you three ways to pay for views. They differ in setup, minimum spend, and where the likes end up.
| Question | Promote | Spark Ads | Regular in-feed ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you set it up | Inside the TikTok app | TikTok Ads Manager (separate website and account) | TikTok Ads Manager |
| What gets shown | Your own existing post | An existing post, yours or a creator's with a code | A video you upload into the ad account |
| Whose name is on it | Yours | The account that posted the video | Your ad account's name |
| Targeting | Automatic, or basic age, gender, location and interests | Full Ads Manager targeting, including custom audiences | Full Ads Manager targeting |
| Goals | Views, followers, website visits, profile views, messages | Any Ads Manager objective | Any Ads Manager objective |
| Minimum spend | About $3 a day (reported) | $50 a day per campaign, $20 per ad group | $50 a day per campaign, $20 per ad group |
| Where likes and followers go | Stay on your post | Stay on the original post | Stay on the ad; nothing is left on your profile when it ends |
| Best for | Spending under $50 on a post that is already doing well | Boosting a proven post or a creator's review with real targeting | Polished ads you would not post organically |

Promote is the cheap, quick option, with trade-offs our page on whether TikTok Promote works goes through, including that promoted views do not count towards Creator Rewards. If you will spend $50 a day and learn Ads Manager, Spark Ads give you the same post with real targeting and reporting.
How much do TikTok ads cost?
TikTok ads are sold at auction, so there is no price list. What you pay depends on who you target, when, and how good the video is. The figures below come from 2025 and 2026 reports across many accounts: a range to plan with, not a quote.
| Number | Reported figure | Who reports it |
|---|---|---|
| CPM (cost per 1,000 views) | $4 to $13 | AdManage, July 2026, pooling WordStream (Apr 2026), Lebesgue (Mar 2026), WebFX (Oct 2025) and Triple Whale (Mar 2026) |
| CPM, median | $8.50 (range $4 to $25) | Benly, March 2026 |
| CPM, ecommerce accounts | $13.26, up 16% year on year | Triple Whale first-party data, via AdManage |
| CPC (cost per click) | $0.30 to $1.50 | AdManage, July 2026; WordStream, April 2026 |
| CPC, median | $0.85 (range $0.30 to $3.00) | Benly, March 2026 |
| Click-through rate | 0.6% to 2% | AdManage, July 2026 |
| Minimum campaign budget | $50 a day | TikTok, Budget and bidding FAQ |
| Minimum ad group budget | $20 a day | TikTok, Budget and bidding FAQ |
| Promote minimum | About $3 a day | Sprout Social, September 2025 (TikTok has not published it) |
Sources: AdManage, TikTok Ads Cost 2026; Benly, TikTok Ads Cost 2026; TikTok Budget and bidding FAQ. CPM and CPC figures are third-party averages, not TikTok prices.
Real accounts land all over that range. In an April 2026 r/advertising thread, "Tiktok CPM $45-50. CPC $3.50. Broad targeting, why?", an advertiser reports paying three to four times the top of the table. In a June 2026 r/PPC thread, "3% CTR, $0.45 CPC, ~0 conversions on TikTok", another reports cheap clicks that turned into almost no sales. Both are single unverified accounts, but they show the two ways TikTok ads go wrong: paying too much for views, or paying little for viewers who never buy.
Spark Ads are usually a little cheaper than uploaded ads for the same reach. Benly reports 20% to 30% lower costs against its baseline, and TikTok claims a 4% lower CPM, because a post with real comments under it gets watched longer and the auction rewards that. One Spark Ad at the $50 minimum for a week costs $350; read the CPM, click rate and cost per result before spending more.
Smart+ campaigns, briefly
Smart+ is TikTok's automated campaign type. You set the goal, the bidding strategy and basic audience limits (location, language, and gender where available); TikTok picks placements, refines targeting and tests your videos for you. Its Smart+ Web Campaigns page says Spark posts are supported, but one campaign cannot mix Spark and non-Spark ads. TikTok also runs a Smart+ incentive: if a qualifying campaign's cost per result in its first three full days comes in more than 20% above your cost cap, TikTok refunds part of the gap as ad credit, provided the campaign reached 15 conversions. A November 2025 r/PPC thread, "Is anyone using TikTok's Smart+ CPA Incentive?", shows advertisers weighing that offer. For a first campaign, Smart+ removes decisions you are not yet equipped to make: its appeal and its risk.
Do Spark Ads hurt your organic reach?
TikTok says paying does not change how your other videos do. Its For Business blog post "3 common questions about TikTok's Promote feature" states that using Promote does not affect the views on your other, non-promoted videos, and About Spark Ads describes a "lasting marketing impact" because the engagement stays on the post. TikTok has published nothing saying Spark Ads reduce reach.
Creators report otherwise. A February 2026 r/SocialMediaMarketing thread, "Spark Ads killed my organic growth on TikTok", describes a drop in unpaid views after a campaign. Nobody in these threads can separate the effect of paying from the normal fall after a big video. Ads also bring in viewers who did not choose you, and if they scroll past quickly, that weak watch time is real data about the video, whichever budget bought the view. Our Promote page has more of these reports. Compare the sparked video's average watch time with your organic average; if it is far lower, you boosted the wrong post.

Pick the post to spark with data
The best Spark Ad is a post that has already done well without money behind it. Paying multiplies what a video is doing; it does not fix it. The real question is which of your posts earns the budget.
Most people pick by likes or by views. Both are weak tests. Views count how many people TikTok showed the video to. Likes are a half-second tap. Saves and shares cost the viewer something: a save means they will come back, a share puts their name on it. Divide saves plus shares by views, per 1,000, and you can compare a video seen by 5,000 people with one seen by 500,000. Our pages on TikTok saves and the engagement rate calculator show where those numbers sit against real accounts.
To test this, we took a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, each creator's last 10 posts with at least 1,000 views, and for each account compared the most-liked post with the post that had the most saves and shares per 1,000 views.
| Question | Result |
|---|---|
| Accounts analysed (posts) | 52 (511) |
| Most-liked post is also best by saves and shares per 1,000 views | 11 of 52 |
| Most-liked post is not the best | 41 of 52 |
| Most-liked post ranks in the bottom half of the account's posts | 16 of 52 |
| Most-viewed post is also best by saves and shares per 1,000 views | 9 of 52 |
| Best post vs the account's median post, saves and shares per 1,000 views | 2.46 times |
| All 511 posts: median, top quarter, top tenth | 6.5, 14.3, 25.7 per 1,000 views |
Data: a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, last 10 posts each, pulled 21 September 2026; 6 creators with fewer than 5 posts over 1,000 views were dropped. Open the sample; the per-account rankings are in this file.
In about 8 accounts in 10, the most-liked post was not the one people were saving and sharing most, and in 3 in 10 it sat in the bottom half. The best post on a typical account earns about two and a half times the saves and shares per view of the account's middle post. That gap is what a Spark Ad should be spent on. Pick by likes and you often pay to boost a video people enjoyed once and forgot.
If a video got 800 views and 12 likes on its own, TikTok already showed it to a test group and they scrolled. Paying for 50,000 more views buys 50,000 more scrolls at $4 to $13 a thousand. Spark the post that beats your own average on saves and shares per view. If none does yet, make more videos before you make an ad.
By hand this means opening every video in TikTok Studio and copying five numbers each. An AI agent connected to TikTok data does it in a minute.
Pull my last 20 posts and rank them by saves and shares per 1,000 views so I can pick which one to spark. Show views, likes, comments, shares, saves and the combined figure for each, mark the account median, and tell me which posts are more than twice the median.

Take the top one or two, check that their average watch time is at or above your account's average, and spark those at the $50 minimum for a week. If the CPM and cost per result match the table above or beat it, you have a video worth more money. If not, the data has told you something cheaper than a bigger budget would.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Spark Ad on TikTok?
A Spark Ad is a normal TikTok post that you pay to show to more people through TikTok Ads Manager. It can be your own post or a creator's post that they have authorized with a code. The ad keeps the poster's name and profile, and all likes, comments, shares and follows from the ad stay on the original post after the campaign ends.
How do I get a Spark Ads code?
On the creator's account: Settings and privacy, Creator tools, switch on Ad settings. Then open the video, tap the three dots, tap Ad settings, switch on Ad authorization, pick a duration, tap Generate code and Copy code. The account must be a Creator or Business account. The advertiser pastes the code into Ads Manager under Spark Ads posts with Add post.
How long does Spark Ads authorization last?
The app offers 7, 30, 60 or 365 days, with 30 as the default, according to 2026 guides. TikTok's own Spark Ads page says only that the duration can be customised and does not list the options. No source we checked shows an unlimited option. When the period ends the ad stops, so ask for 365 days for anything you plan to run for more than a few weeks.
How much do TikTok ads cost per day?
TikTok requires at least $50 a day per campaign and $20 a day per ad group in Ads Manager, which covers Spark Ads and regular in-feed ads. Promote, inside the app, starts at about $3 a day according to 2025 and 2026 guides. What that money buys varies: reports put the average cost at $4 to $13 per 1,000 views and $0.30 to $1.50 per click.
Spark Ads vs Promote: which is better?
Promote is better if you want to spend under $50 on your own post and do not want to learn Ads Manager. Spark Ads are better if you want real targeting, to boost a creator's post rather than your own, or to track sales rather than views. Both leave the likes and followers on the post. Promoted views also do not count towards the Creator Rewards Program.
Do Spark Ads hurt organic reach?
TikTok says no: its For Business blog states that Promote does not affect the views on your other videos, and it describes Spark Ads as having a lasting impact because the engagement stays on the post. Some creators report drops afterwards, including a February 2026 Reddit thread titled "Spark Ads killed my organic growth on TikTok". None of those reports can separate paying from the normal fall after a big video. Check the sparked video's average watch time against your organic average.
