Half of US consumers now use TikTok as a search engine, and the single biggest topic in TikTok's own trending list drew 156 million searches in one week. Those are the two ends of this page: what surveys say about people, and what TikTok's search data says about queries.
Most TikTok search statistics on the web trace back to three or four studies, and plenty are misquoted. Every figure below links to the study that produced it, with the year. We dropped anything we could not trace to a primary source. The last section is our own data, pulled from Creator Search Insights on 19 September 2026, snapshots linked.
How many people search on TikTok
- 49% of consumers use TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% two years earlier. Adobe surveyed 807 US consumers and 200 small-business owners in January 2026 (Adobe, 2026).
- 41% said the same in Adobe's 2024 wave, from 808 consumers and 250 business owners (Adobe via MediaPost, 2024). Adobe replaced that post at its original URL, so the older numbers survive only in coverage of it.
- 57% of TikTok users use the app's search function, and 23% search within 30 seconds of opening it, according to TikTok's own pitch for Search Ads (TikTok via Social Media Today, 2024). TikTok published no sample size or method for this, so read it as a sales figure rather than research.
- 66.6% of US consumers have used social search at least once, across all platforms (EMARKETER, 2025).
- 37% of US adults say they use TikTok, up from 21% in 2021. Pew surveyed 5,022 adults between February and June 2025 (Pew Research Center, 2025).
Who searches on TikTok
- 49% of millennials and 29% of Gen X say they have used TikTok as a search engine, against 14% of boomers (Adobe via MediaPost, 2024).
- 25% of Gen Z consumers say TikTok is effective for finding information, against 17% of millennials, 12% of Gen X and 5% of boomers (Adobe, 2026). Gen Z made up 15% of Adobe's sample, so that figure rests on roughly 120 people.
- 68% of US teens aged 13 to 17 use TikTok, from a probability-based survey of 1,458 teens run between 25 September and 9 October 2025 (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- 21% of US teens are on TikTok almost constantly, up from 16% in 2022 (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- 43% of US adults under 30 regularly get news on TikTok, up from 9% in 2020 (Pew Research Center, 2025).
- 20% of all US adults now regularly get news on TikTok, up from 3% in 2020. Pew says no platform it studies has grown faster on this measure. Sample: 5,153 adults, August 2025 (Pew Research Center, 2025).
What people search for on TikTok
- Roughly six in ten teen TikTok users (58%) say product reviews and recommendations are a reason they use it, a higher share than on Instagram or Snapchat (Pew Research Center, 2026).
- 82% of teen TikTok users call entertainment a major reason for being there (Pew Research Center, 2026). Search is real, but it is the side door.
- People search TikTok for recipes (36%), music (35%), DIY tips (34%) and fashion advice (30%) (Adobe via MediaPost, 2024). This is still the most concrete breakdown published; Adobe's 2026 wave asked a different question.
- Searchers want video tutorials (61%), product reviews (45%), personal stories (41%) and influencer recommendations (33%) when they search on TikTok (Adobe, 2026).
TikTok as a search engine, against Google
- "Something like almost 40% of young people, when they're looking for a place for lunch, they don't go to Google Maps or Search. They go to TikTok or Instagram." Google's Prabhakar Raghavan, then head of Search, at Fortune Brainstorm Tech (TechCrunch, 2022). This is the most misquoted number in social search: it came from unpublished internal research on US 18-to-24s, it covered one query type, it bundled TikTok with Instagram, and it is four years old.
- The share of Gen Z who say they are more likely to rely on TikTok than Google halved, from 8% in 2024 to 4% in 2026 (Adobe, 2026).
- 89% of Gen Z still name Google as their preferred platform for finding information, against 38% for Reddit and 25% for TikTok (Adobe, 2026).
- 14% of consumers say they are more likely to rely on ChatGPT than Google, more than three times the share who say it of TikTok (Adobe, 2026).
- Only 10% of Gen Z name TikTok as their go-to for local search, against 30% for Google (BrightLocal, 2025). TikTok is the only platform in that survey where Gen Z puts a social app in the top five at all.
TikTok search adoption is wide and shallow. Half of consumers have searched on it, almost nobody has swapped Google for it, and the platform pulling preference away from Google is ChatGPT. For creators that is good news: search demand on TikTok is large while nearly everyone is still optimising for the For You page.
TokConnect data: what TikTok's own search numbers look like
These come from TikTok's Creator Search Insights, pulled through TokConnect on 19 September 2026. Search popularity is a count of searches over the last seven days, global. Video counts are how many videos TikTok has matched to the topic. Hashtag counts are lifetime totals for the tag.
- 156,151,825 searches in seven days for the biggest topic in TikTok's trending list, "easy engagement tricks for story posts". The biggest food topic, "viral dessert ideas with minimal effort", drew 156,089,380, and the biggest sports topic 117,997,685 (snapshot).
- 113 of the 140 trending topics we pulled had zero videos matched to them. Demand exists; the answers do not (snapshot).
- 78 of TikTok's 80 flagged content gaps had zero videos, and the 80 together drew 49,242,310 searches in a week (snapshot). The live list is on our content gaps page.
- #Comedy is the largest hashtag we found, with 2.99 trillion lifetime views across 928,727,822 videos (snapshot).
- 398 hashtags across 40 niches hold 40.4 trillion lifetime views between them, which is a reminder that hashtag views measure history, not this week's demand (snapshot). See hashtags versus keywords.

Using these statistics
Quote any of them with the original link. We would rather you cited Pew and Adobe directly than cited us citing them, and the TokConnect rows carry their own snapshot so anyone can check the number.
Three traps if you are assembling your own list. Adobe's 2024 post was overwritten by the 2026 wave at the same URL, so many roundups link to a page that no longer says what they claim. The Raghavan quote is about lunch spots, not search. And TikTok's "57% use search" figure has no published method behind it.
For live numbers in your own niche rather than survey averages, use Creator Search Insights, and read what the search volume number means before you quote one.
Pull TikTok's trending search topics for the Food and Sports categories with their 7-day search volume, popularity score and video count. Show the ten biggest in one table, flag any with fewer than 100 videos, and tell me which three a small account could realistically rank for this week.
Frequently asked questions
Does TikTok have a search engine?
Yes. TikTok has a full search product with tabs for videos, users, sounds, LIVE and shopping, plus autocomplete suggestions and keyword-targeted search ads. It also publishes search demand data to creators through Creator Search Insights, which is where the 7-day search volumes on this page come from.
How many people use TikTok as a search engine?
Adobe's January 2026 survey of 807 US consumers found 49% had used TikTok as a search engine, up from 41% in its 2024 wave. TikTok separately told advertisers that 57% of its users use the in-app search function, though it published no method for that figure.
Is TikTok replacing Google?
No, and the data usually cited for it says the opposite. In Adobe's 2026 survey 89% of Gen Z still named Google as their preferred platform for finding information, and the share of Gen Z more likely to rely on TikTok than Google fell from 8% to 4%. ChatGPT, at 14% of all consumers, is pulling more preference away from Google than TikTok is.
How does the TikTok search engine work?
TikTok matches a query against the words in a video's caption, its on-screen text and its transcribed speech, then ranks by relevance and engagement signals. Hashtags help it categorise a video but are not the main match. How TikTok search works covers it in detail.
