You can see a trend on TikTok. Proving it is the problem. CrowdTangle closed in August 2024, its replacement covers Facebook and Instagram and is gated behind an academic application, and TikTok's Research API is for university researchers, not reporters. So the honest answer to "how big is this?" has been a screenshot and a shrug. TikTok trends for journalists come down to one thing: a number, with a date on it, that your editor will run.

What you'd ask on day one

Three questions, run on 19 September 2026. Each answer below is the real output, with the snapshot that backs it.

What's moving on my beat

I cover food. What is rising fastest in TikTok search this week? Give me the topic, the searches in the last seven days, how much the daily series grew across the week, and how many videos exist so far.

Topic7-day searchesGrowth across the weekVideos
freeze drying drake original16,230,321282x0
gravy fries disney8,247,47424x0
delores hotdog bun8,451,73420x1,124
mayo mom burger review5,977,10611x0
trying the viral lunch trend locally13,858,5402.5x928

Growth is the last day of TikTok's seven-day series divided by the first. The zero in the videos column means people are searching for something almost nobody has posted yet, which is usually the earliest signal you will get.

Is this actually new?

A raw-milk story is going round. Pull the last 180 days of TikTok search for it and tell me whether interest is climbing or whether it has been steady all year.

  • Topic: "Raw milk guy", 178,117 searches in the last seven days
  • Daily series: 22 March to 18 September 2026, 181 days, 177 of them with a reported figure
  • Median day: 104,481 searches. Highest day: 339,563 on 26 July
  • 18 September: 178,116, inside the normal range

Answer: not new. It has run all summer and peaked in July. For contrast, the same call on "freeze drying drake original" shows a term that sat at a median of 242,923 searches a day for six months, then hit 16,230,321 on 18 September. That is 67 times its own median and about three times its previous six-month high, 99% of it in the United States. One of those is a story about a spike. The other is not.

How big is the hashtag

What are the biggest hashtags on the raw-milk story, with lifetime views and video counts, so I can say which framing is winning?

HashtagViewsVideos
#rawmilk1,440,044,02256,140
#rawmilkrevolution40,352,0633,012
#rawmilktruth6,097,807119
#rawmilkheals5,023,608275
#rawmilkbenefits4,096,795355
#rawmilkconspiracy9,28715

Every advocacy framing has a tag in the millions. The sceptical one has 15 videos. That contrast is a paragraph, and the figures are TikTok's own lifetime totals for each tag.

How it fits your week

  1. Connect once. One config block in Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or Gemini. Every setup is on the connect page; most reporters use Claude Desktop because it needs no terminal.
  2. Ask in chat. Monday morning, one line: what rose in search on my beat this week. Then chase the two that look like stories.
  3. Save the answer. Ask for the raw JSON and file it with your notes. The live number will move by Thursday. The file will not, which is what a fact-checker needs in March.

Cite it the way you already cite Google Trends: name the source, give the date. The search figures are TikTok's own Creator Search Insights data, pulled live, and search popularity means searches over the last seven days, global unless a country is set. Hashtag views and video counts are TikTok's lifetime totals. Nothing is modelled or estimated by us. Our weekly trends pages are free to link and quote without an account, if all you need is one number and a source.

What it does not do: no posting, no ads, no transcripts, no private or personal data, no DMs, no affiliation with TikTok. It reads what a logged-in person sees.

Straight answers

"Can I actually cite this?"

Yes, with the same attribution you would give any platform data: "TikTok Creator Search Insights, via TokConnect, 19 September 2026". Every call returns JSON we save with that date. If you want a public link rather than a private file, use the trends pages, which are dated, sourced and open to anyone.

"Is that TikTok's number or your estimate?"

TikTok's. Search popularity is the figure TikTok shows a creator inside its own tool, and we pass it through untouched. We do not model, smooth or extrapolate. Where TikTok reports nothing for a day, the snapshot shows a gap rather than a guess.

"Will the number still be there when a fact-checker looks?"

The live figure will have moved, because search volume is a rolling seven-day count. The snapshot will not. That is the point of saving the JSON: you can hand someone the file you pulled on the day and it still says what you published.

"Is this scraping, and will our lawyers mind?"

It reads the same public surfaces a logged-in TikTok user sees: search results, topic pages, hashtags, public comments. No private data, no personal data collection, no posting. Commenter identifiers are stripped from anything we publish, and you should strip them from anything you quote unless the account is a public figure.

The plan that fits

One tool call spends one credit. The three questions above cost five credits between them. A weekly routine of a beat sweep, three topic checks, one history pull and a hashtag lookup is about six credits a week, so the free tier's 100 credits covers roughly four months of that. No card, and nothing to expense. Move to Starter at $49 a month when the whole desk is using it or when a big story needs 200 comments coded in an afternoon. Pricing and the credit table.

Guides for reporters

Questions journalists and newsrooms ask

How should I cite a TikTok search figure in a story?

The way you cite Google Trends: name the source and the date, for example "TikTok Creator Search Insights, via TokConnect, 19 September 2026". Search popularity means searches over the last seven days, global unless a country is set, so say the window. Every call is saved as dated JSON you can show a fact-checker later.

Can journalists get access to TikTok's Research API?

Not usually. TikTok limits it to academic researchers at non-profit universities in the US, Europe, Canada and Brazil, with a proposal and a review that can run for weeks. Reporters at commercial outlets do not qualify. The eligibility rules are here.

Is there a CrowdTangle for TikTok?

No. Meta closed CrowdTangle on 14 August 2024, and the Meta Content Library that replaced it covers Facebook and Instagram only, for academics and non-profits applying through ICPSR. TikTok never had an equivalent for non-academics. Creator Search Insights is the closest thing TikTok offers, and it has no export, no API and no history view.

Do I need to pay to quote your numbers?

No. The trends pages are dated, sourced and free to read, link and quote. You only need an account if you want to run your own beat queries and keep the raw files.
