How to choose hashtags for TikTok

Search matches your caption, on-screen text and speech as well as your tags, so the hashtag job is narrow: tell TikTok which shelf the video belongs on, then spend the real effort on the phrase people type. TikTok names hashtags among the signals behind what it recommends, and its Creator Academy says "less is more". Fill the slots in this order.

1. One broad tag that names the category: #SkinCare, #gym, #Travel. This is the shelf.
2. One or two niche tags naming what you do inside it: #SkincareTips, #gymworkout, #travelhack.
3. One specific tag for the thing in the video: the product, the destination, the exercise, the book.
4. A fifth only if it earns it: a challenge you are joining, or a community tag your people follow. Five is the most a post can carry since August 2025, as Social Media Today and MediaPost reported.

Relevance beats size. A precise tag describes the video to TikTok and to anyone browsing the tag. A giant unrelated tag describes nothing and puts you in a queue of millions.

Why the biggest hashtag is not the best hashtag

#Comedy has 3.01 trillion lifetime views. It also has 929,126,113 videos on it. Nobody browses that tag, and adding it tells TikTok nothing useful about your video.

Every table below shows lifetime views, how many videos carry the tag, and views per video. Lifetime means since the tag existed, with no time window, so a huge number mostly tells you the tag is old. Read the ratio instead. #hairideas averages about 66,700 views per video; #hair averages about 21,100 on 32.8 million videos. The specific tag has better odds and a shorter queue.

View counts also cannot tell you whether anyone is searching for the subject now. That is a different dataset: TikTok's search popularity figures, which are 7-day counts in Creator Search Insights. The two sit side by side in hashtags versus keywords.

How we got these numbers

We ran TikTok's hashtag search (10 tags per keyword) for 40 niche keywords through TokConnect's MCP server on 5 October 2026, then picked four or five useful tags per niche for 20 niches, skipping emoji and punctuation copies. View and video counts are TikTok's lifetime totals for each tag; views per video is our division of the two, rounded. These are not time-bound, so they say nothing about the last week. We also ran Creator Search Insights topic search for "hashtags" and "best hashtags" (20 topics each) to look for typed searches about hashtags; 39 of 40 were TikTok's generated topic groups, so this page uses no search-volume figure for hashtag questions.
