Read the numbers
How to read search estimates and content gaps
Every result is one TikTok topic with three numbers. Read them like an iceberg: what is filmed sits above the water, what people search for sits below.
Popularity is TikTok's separate 0 to 100 score for the topic. Use it to break ties, not to rank by itself.
Listed videos
How many videos TikTok lists for that topic. It describes the topic record, not every video on TikTok that mentions the words.
Content gap
A big search estimate with 0 or very few listed videos. People keep asking and almost nobody has answered on camera. Search TikTok for the phrase once to confirm before you film.
Topic group
Some records are TikTok's own descriptive labels that pool many related searches. Their figure is not one phrase people typed. Skip anything at 5 million or more, or that reads like a category.
Real example: pottery
A real example: pottery, 8 October 2026
We searched TikTok topics for "pottery" on 8 October 2026 and got 20 records. That is a deeper pull than the free tool shows, which lists up to 10 matching topics per search. 18 were typed searches and 2 were TikTok topic groups. Of the typed searches, 8 had no videos listed at all. The chart leaves out three that read like names of particular studios or places.

The face mug cluster
Four wordings of one idea: "pottery mug face" (293,087), "face mug pottery" (292,153), "mug face pottery" (239,028) and "pottery face mugs" (186,306). TikTok lists 140 videos on one of them and none on the other three. One good face mug video can answer all four.
A before-and-after nobody filmed
"before and after firing pottery" drew 276,517 searches in 7 days with 0 videos listed. It's a natural format: the same piece shown raw, then out of the kiln.
Covered, but still worth it
