TikTok SEO is the work of getting your videos to show up when someone types a phrase into TikTok's search bar, and in the suggested searches TikTok shows under videos and across the app. The method is the same as search anywhere else: find out what people are actually searching for, make the video that answers it, and put their words where TikTok can read them.

The step almost every guide skips is the first one. TikTok publishes real search volume, free, inside its own app. Below is where those numbers live, what they mean, and a worked example that turns one of them into a video, using data we pulled on 19 September 2026.

What TikTok SEO actually is

Two surfaces matter, and they behave differently.

The search results page. Tap the magnifying glass, type a phrase, and TikTok returns tabs: Top, Users, Videos, LIVE, Shop, Sounds, and an Ask tab that answers in text. Under the tabs sit refinement chips that narrow the query further. Ranking here is a query-to-video match, and a video posted last year can win it.

Search-suggested feeds. TikTok attaches related queries to videos in the For You feed, shows "others searched for" under results, and pre-fills the search bar with suggestions. These send people into search in the first place, which is why phrasing TikTok already recognises beats a clever title.

TikTok also pays for this now. Its Creator Rewards Program lists four things that decide what a qualifying video earns: originality, play duration, search value and audience engagement. TikTok describes search value as a metric assigned to content based on popular search terms.

How TikTok search ranks videos

TikTok has never published a ranking-factor list for search. It has published the signals behind recommendations, and those overlap. Being straight about which is which saves you from optimising for something nobody has confirmed.

SignalStatusWhat to do about it
Caption textPublished. TikTok names video information, including captions, sounds and hashtags, among the signals behind what it recommends.Put the search phrase in the first line of the caption.
HashtagsPublished, same page, same sentence as captions.Three to five, all about the topic. They are a categorisation signal, not a volume dial.
SoundPublished, same list.Matters for trend distribution, not for a text query.
Engagement and watch timePublished, as recommendation signals and as reward factors.Make the first three seconds answer the question, not tease it.
Search value of the topicPublished, in the Creator Rewards terms.Pick topics people search for. That is the whole of this page.
On-screen textNot published as a search factor. Strongly suggested by what ranks.Cheap to do, so do it. Put the phrase on screen for the first two seconds.
Spoken words and auto-captionsNot published as a search factor. TikTok does generate captions from speech automatically.Say the phrase out loud, turn auto-captions on, fix the transcription errors.

Look at what TikTok itself returns. Search pushups and the top two results both carry the query in on-screen text, burned into the frame, before you read a single caption.

TikTok search results for pushups showing the Ask, Top, Users, Videos, LIVE, Shop and Sounds tabs, refinement chips for Latest, Challenge, Form and Beginner, and two top videos whose on-screen text reads Do this Pushup Routine Every Morning and Fix THESE Pushup Mistakes
The search results page for one query. Note the refinement chips (Latest, Challenge, Form, Beginner) and that both top videos put the query phrase in on-screen text.

Copy that pattern: the words in the frame, the caption and the voiceover, and a video that answers the query in one sitting. Our explainer on how TikTok search works goes through each results tab.

The step other guides skip: TikTok publishes search volume

In March 2024 TikTok shipped a keyword tool inside the app called Creator Search Insights. Search the phrase creator search insights in the app, tap View, or log in at tiktok.com/csi, and you get a search bar that returns topics with a number next to each one.

That number is a count of searches over the last seven days, global unless you pick a country. It is not an estimate from a third-party tool and it is not a monthly average like Google's. A TikTok topic showing 3M a week is a different scale from a Google keyword at 3M a month. The search volume guide covers the comparison properly.

Every topic also carries a video count. When it reads 0, TikTok has matched no videos to that topic cluster, which is the signal behind the content gap badge. High searches with zero matched videos is the cheapest search traffic on the platform.

TikTok's autocomplete for the same seed gives you the phrasing people type rather than the clusters TikTok files them under: plant care tips, plant care app, plant care asmr, plant care spray, plant care aquarium, plant care nursery, plant care indoor, plant care at home. Use both lists. The topics give you demand, autocomplete gives you wording.

Now the part that decides whether the research was worth doing: the biggest number is not the target. Open a topic and TikTok gives you its countries in rank order. For "step by step plant care basics" that list runs 232 countries deep, with Brazil, Pakistan and Myanmar at the top and the United States 41st. Nearly eight million searches a week, almost none of them from an audience a US creator can sell to.

So take the smaller one. Plant care tips and tricks: 3,032,596 searches in the week, 261 matched videos, countries Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines and the United States. It went from 4,099 searches on day one of that week to 3,032,596 on day seven, so it is rising. That is the topic to make.

Going one level deeper

Open a topic's related list and you get the long tail with its own numbers. Off "plant care tips and tricks": Calathea Plant Care Tips (266,579 searches, 0 videos), Plant care tips for small spaces (59,017, 0 videos), Houseplant (156,453, 0 videos). Smaller, easier to win, and specific enough to film in one take.

Then write the video around the phrase. For "plant care tips and tricks", three lines do the work:

  • First spoken line: "Three plant care tips and tricks that saved every plant I nearly killed."
  • On-screen text, seconds 0 to 2: Plant care tips and tricks
  • Caption, first line: Plant care tips and tricks for beginners: water less, light more, repot in spring.

The full method, with a sheet you can copy, is in the keyword research guide.

The on-page checklist

Run this on every video you want to rank. It takes two minutes and it is most of TikTok SEO.

  1. Say the phrase in the first three seconds. Out loud, in the hook, before any intro. This is the item people skip and the one that changes results.
  2. Put the phrase on screen for the first two seconds. Plain text, high contrast, not behind the caption bar or the profile column.
  3. Open the caption with the phrase. First seven or eight words, then whatever else you want to say.
  4. Three to five hashtags, all on topic. One broad, two specific. Thirty hashtags is noise, and the hashtag data shows why.
  5. Turn auto-captions on and correct them. TikTok's transcription mangles product names and plant names. Fix them in the caption editor.
  6. Put the phrase on the cover. The cover text is what a searcher reads in the results grid before deciding to tap.
  7. Answer the query in the video. If the phrase is "plant care tips and tricks", give three tips. A video that bait-and-switches gets the tap and loses the watch time.

How to measure it

TikTok tells you exactly how much search traffic a video got. Open TikTok Studio, go to Analytics, then Content, pick the video, and scroll to Traffic sources. You get a split across For You, Personal profile, Following, Sound and Search.

Track the Search percentage across your last ten videos and you have a baseline. If it climbs on the optimised ones and stays flat on the rest, the method is working. Creator Search Insights also reports how your own posts are doing in search, which is the closest thing TikTok gives you to a rank tracker.

Give it weeks, not days. For You traffic arrives overnight and stops. Search traffic builds, and a video that ranks keeps earning views months later.

Common mistakes

  • Stuffing hashtags instead of writing captions. A wall of tags tells TikTok less than one clear sentence.
  • Optimising for a phrase nobody searches. "Plant parent aesthetic" sounds good and has no demand behind it. Check before you film.
  • Chasing the biggest number. Volume without the country check and the video count is a vanity metric.
  • Using the #creatorsearchinsights hashtag. It does nothing for the topic you found in the tool.
  • Treating it as a one-off. The plant care topic above went from 2.97M searches on 19 August to 7.92M on 18 September. Re-check before you post, not once a quarter.
  • Ignoring the 0 in the video column. Topics with high searches and no matched videos are the ones you can win this week. They are listed on the content gaps page.

Doing this with an agent

The research above is four lookups and a filter, which is the sort of thing to delegate. With TokConnect connected to Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor, the whole pass runs in one message.

I make videos about [your niche]. Search TikTok topics for that niche and give me a table of every topic with its 7-day search volume, video count and category. Pull the country ranking for the top three and tell me where [your country] sits in each. Then pick the best topic for an audience in [your country] that has under 500 matched videos, and write me the first spoken line, the on-screen text and the caption, all using the topic's exact wording.

The answer comes back with the numbers attached, so you can check the work rather than trust it. If you would rather do it by hand, the app has everything except the export.

Frequently asked questions

Can you do SEO on TikTok?

Yes. TikTok has a search bar, ranked results across Top, Videos, Users and Shop tabs, and suggested searches attached to videos, so the same work applies: research what people search, answer it, and put the words in your caption, on-screen text and voiceover. TikTok also rewards it directly, listing search value as one of four factors in its Creator Rewards Program. Unlike Google, TikTok publishes its own search volume inside the app through Creator Search Insights.

Do keywords work on TikTok?

Yes, in the places TikTok can read them. TikTok names video information, including captions and hashtags, among the signals behind what it recommends, and search results are visibly full of videos carrying the query in their caption and on-screen text. What does not work is keyword stuffing: one clear sentence with the phrase in it beats thirty tags. Put the phrase in the first line of the caption, on screen in the first two seconds, and say it out loud.

What are good keywords for TikTok?

Phrases people actually search that you can answer in under a minute, with few matching videos. Search your niche in Creator Search Insights and look for topics with high 7-day searches and a low or zero video count, then check the country ranking so the demand comes from your audience. In our plant care pull, "plant care tips and tricks" (3,032,596 searches, 261 videos) beat a topic with 7.9M searches whose top countries were Brazil, Pakistan and Myanmar. The keyword research guide has the full method.

How do I find TikTok keywords for free?

Two free sources. TikTok's autocomplete: start typing a seed in the app's search bar and write down every suggestion. And Creator Search Insights, free in the app or at tiktok.com/csi, which gives you the search numbers autocomplete does not. Neither exports, so you keep the results in your own sheet, or pull them into a sheet with a tool that can.
