01 · Under the hood

How the Bright Data MCP gets TikTok data

Bright Data's TikTok MCP runs on its Web Scraper API. We read its open-source server code, its README and its docs on 10 October 2026. This is the path one call takes.

Bright Data MCP

Turn on the tools. The four TikTok tools sit in Pro mode or the social group. Rapid (Free) mode is the default and covers search and page scraping.
Pass a TikTok URL. web_data_tiktok_profiles, _posts, _shop and _comments each take a profile, post, product or video URL.
A collection starts. The server posts to datasets/v3/trigger and gets a snapshot_id back.
It polls. Once a second, until the snapshot is ready or POLLING_TIMEOUT runs out: 600 seconds by default.

TokConnect MCP

Connect once. All 83 TikTok tools load together in ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor or the chat.
Pass a handle, keyword or ID. user_profile takes a handle, search_topics a keyword, search_shop_products a product phrase.
One request, one answer. Each call returns compact JSON in the same response.
Chain the next call. The agent feeds a queryId or video ID into the next tool.

Its sync /scrape endpoint has a 1-minute limit, after which it hands back a snapshot_id. Bright Data says it "does not publish a fixed figure" for response time.

Its tool descriptions say a call "can be a cache lookup", and its README calls that faster and more reliable than scraping the same page. A cached copy is a stored read, not a fresh one. Every TokConnect call reads TikTok at the moment you ask.

Head-to-head test: the same 12 TikTok jobs on both MCPs

We sent the same 12 jobs, one at a time, to TokConnect and to Bright Data's hosted MCP in Pro mode, and timed each from request to full answer with a 900-second limit. The jobs: three brand profiles (@scrubdaddy, @ryanair, @gymshark), each brand's latest post, the comments on that post, and three TikTok Shop products.

Why the gap

It matches Bright Data's design. Each TikTok call starts a collection, then polls the snapshot until it is ready, and its docs say that takes "30 seconds to several minutes". The slowest call, a single post lookup, took 276.88 seconds, about 4.6 minutes.

Both finished every job

Bright Data had no failures in this run; all 12 calls returned data. The difference was time. For an agent doing research while you wait, minutes per call add up: the 12 jobs took 20.5 minutes against about one. For an overnight bulk job, the wait matters less.

Exact counts vs display values

For @scrubdaddy, Bright Data returned 4,400,000 followers and 104,000,000 likes, rounded display values. TokConnect returned 4,438,874 followers and 103,960,943 likes at the same time.

Ooni's TikTok, read in one sitting

Ooni has 90,943 followers and 550 videos. Two creator_posts calls returned its last 40 posts, from 10 August to 9 October 2026, with a median of 1,842 views. One post stood far above the rest: a Halo Core mixer video at 70,400 views and 571 saves.

How we got these numbers

TikTok figures were pulled on 10 October 2026 with TokConnect's MCP server: user_profile for @oonihq, creator_posts (two pages of 20), video_comments on three Ooni videos, search_topics for "pizza oven" and "ooni", search_popularity (180 days) and audience_demographics (30 days) for "wood fire pizza oven", and search_shop_products for "pizza oven". Each call was timed with time.perf_counter(), about 2 seconds apart. Three more requests were rejected before reaching TikTok because we passed a wrong argument type; they are logged in the file and left out of the timing. Cover images came from video_detail afterwards. Comment authors are removed from the data.
