To get followers on TikTok, post videos about one topic people already search for, make it clear in three seconds what the video is and who it is for, and keep posting that kind of video until TikTok knows who to show it to. Followers are strangers who watched, tapped your name and found more of the same. This page shows how to get followers on TikTok with numbers instead of pep talk.

The first 1,000 matter most, because that is where TikTok unlocks LIVE and, in most regions, Shop affiliate and a bio link. The numbers below come from a September 2026 sample of 58 creators, two fresh TikTok user searches and five public profiles. No accounts are named.

LIVE is the clearest rule, and the going live guide covers what to do when the button still does not show. US Shop affiliate also starts at 1,000; the affiliate requirements guide has the full list. The bio link is where sources disagree: two guides updated in July and September 2026 say a personal account still needs 1,000 followers, one from May 2026 says the minimum went in mid-2024. TikTok has not published a current rule, so open Edit profile and see whether the Website field is there.

What TikTok has published about followers

TikTok explained its For You feed in a June 2020 newsroom post, How TikTok recommends videos #ForYou: neither follower count nor a history of high-performing videos is a direct factor in what gets recommended. Vamp's guide, updated 10 September 2026, links the post and puts it plainly: TikTok doesn't weight recommendations by follower count or by a creator's past hits.

So a video from an account with 80 followers can travel as far as one from an account with 80,000, and followers are not a lever you pull to get views; they are what you get after views, from the people who wanted more.

The data: small accounts get far more plays per follower

We took a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, 572 posts, and divided each creator's typical views per post by their follower count.

Follower tierCreatorsMedian followersMedian views per postViews as a share of followers (median creator)

Over 1M293,100,000102,4503.5%

Data: a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, sample snapshot; the by-tier ratios are in the followers snapshot. Views are TikTok's playCount per post.

The middle creator under 10,000 followers gets about one view per follower on a typical post; the middle creator over a million gets 3 or 4 views per 100 followers. Three of the five smallest accounts had typical views above their follower count, so almost every view was a stranger. For someone at zero that is the useful fact: your views will come from people who do not follow you, each one is a possible follower, and getting to 1,000 is about how many of them you convert.

Who TikTok ranks when someone searches a niche

We ran TikTok's user search for two topics and saved the 20 accounts it returned for each.

Data: TikTok user search via TokConnect, pulled 22 September 2026, 20 results per search. Open the snapshot. Handles are not stored.

Crochet is a crowded, older niche: 15 of the 20 accounts sit between 100,000 and a million followers. Budget travel is the opposite: 12 of the 20 have under 10,000 followers, three have under 1,000, and an account with 135 followers is on the first page. TikTok's search does not filter accounts by size; it shows what matches.

So before you pick a topic, run the same search. If everyone is over 100,000, you are choosing to compete with them; if half the results are small, TikTok already surfaces small accounts for that topic. The niche guide and the content gap guide show how to find topics with searches and few videos.

How many posts did it take?

We opened five of those 40 profiles and compared total posts with total followers.

Data: TikTok public profiles, pulled 22 September 2026. Open the snapshot. Followers per post is total followers divided by total posts; it is a hint, not a rate, because both numbers build up over years.

The spread is 17 to 192 followers per post, with the middle account at 61, so at that rate 1,000 followers is roughly 17 posts that land. The two crochet accounts show what one repeated format in a topic with demand can do; the 899-post travel account shows what posting about everything does. Every account here is over three years old.

How to get followers on TikTok: seven steps

1. Pick one topic people search for

People follow for more of the thing they just liked. If your last five videos are a recipe, a rant, a dog and two dances, a viewer who liked the recipe has no reason to expect another. One topic also tells TikTok who to test your next video on. Pick it by demand, not mood, using the niche guide and the content gap guide.

2. Make your profile say what you post, in one line

The follow happens on your profile page, not on the video. A stranger taps your name, reads one line and looks at the grid. If the line says what you post and the grid shows nine more of it, they follow; if the line is a quote and the grid is a mix, they leave. The bio guide has lines that pass this test.

3. Build a series and repeat your formats

A series gives a viewer a reason to follow right now: part 2 is coming. A repeat format, the same opening line, setting and length, lets TikTok learn who your videos are for and lets a returning viewer recognise you. Number your parts in the caption and the first frame. The two crochet accounts above post variations on one format and hold 167 to 192 followers per post.

4. Reply to comments with a video

Comments are rare: in the 58-creator sample the middle creator got about one comment per 100 likes, so each one is a person who cared enough to type. When a comment asks a question, tap Reply, choose the video option, and answer it. The reply sits on their comment under the original video, shows on your profile, and is a topic at least one viewer asked for.

5. Post at a rate you can hold

More posts help, but only if each one is still about your topic and still watchable. Pick a rate you can keep for three months without the quality dropping. The posting frequency guide measures how often the sampled creators actually post.

6. Post when your people are on

Once you pass 100 followers, the Followers tab in TikTok Studio shows the hours and days your followers are on TikTok. Before that, use the measured windows in the best time to post guide, built from the same 572 posts. Timing will not save a weak video, but a strong one posted while your viewers sleep waits longer for its first reactions.

7. Skip follow-for-follow, and never buy followers

TikTok's Community Guidelines, effective 13 September 2025, list "Buying or selling followers or engagement for financial gain" as not allowed, and "Like-for-like promises" and "False incentives for gifting or following" as ineligible for the For You feed. Follow trains and follow-for-follow fall into that second group. Followers gained that way never watch, which drags down every signal TikTok does use.

Buying followers kills the account's reach

TikTok's rules treat bought followers and likes as fake engagement, and a June 2026 review of the policy describes the ladder: fake follows removed, then restricted visibility in search and the For You feed, then suspension, then a permanent ban for repeat cases, plus a block from TikTok's Creator Marketplace. The cost starts earlier: bought followers never watch, so every real viewer sees a big follower count next to tiny view counts, the one pattern that says an account is not real.

Rules: TikTok Community Guidelines, Integrity and Authenticity, wording checked against the Open Terms Archive copy (effective 13 September 2025); consequences as described by AuditSocials, June 2026.

What creators report

Four Reddit threads show the range of experience in their titles alone. On r/Tiktokhelp, "Grew TikTok from 0 to 100k followers in 6 months" is a fast climb written up. On r/GrowthHacking in June 2026, "How I Get 5K+ TikTok Followers Every Week (Without Buying Fake Followers)" is a larger one whose author felt the need to say the followers were not bought. On r/TikTok in March 2024, "How I tripped into thousands of TikTok followers" is growth that arrived before the plan. And on r/TikTokLounge in July 2026, "Be honest... how do small creators actually grow on TikTok?" is the question most readers of this page are asking.

These are creator reports, not TikTok policy, cited by subreddit and title. Weigh each against the numbers above: thousands of followers a week is far outside the 17 to 192 followers per post the five profiles show.

How to read new followers in your analytics

TikTok Studio shows four numbers that tell you whether the steps are working; the analytics guide shows where each lives.

  • New followers, per video. On each video's detail page. 2,000 views and 40 new followers is doing the job; 200,000 views and 40 new followers found the wrong people.
  • Profile views. In the Overview tab. High profile views with low new followers means step 2 failed: the profile did not close the sale.
  • The Followers tab. Appears at 100 followers. Net change per day, and the hours your followers are on TikTok.
  • Traffic sources. On each video. The Following share is the part of your views from people who already follow you. It starts near zero; as it grows, your series is working.

Check new followers per video for a month. The two or three videos with the most follows per 1,000 views are your format; make more of those.

Find the small accounts TikTok ranks in your niche

The niche table above took two calls to TikTok's user search. An agent can do the same for your topic, then open the small accounts and describe what they post.

Paste this into your agent

Find 20 accounts under 10k followers in [my niche] that TikTok ranks in search and show what they post. Search TikTok users for [my niche], keep the accounts under 10,000 followers, and for each one list follower count, total posts and the captions of their five most recent videos. Then tell me which formats repeat.

If nobody under 10,000 comes back, that is an answer too. Try a narrower phrase, the way "budget travel" is narrower than "travel", until small accounts appear. That is where TokConnect's search data says a new account can be found.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get 1,000 followers on TikTok?

Pick one topic people search for, make your profile say that topic in one line, and post the same kind of video on a steady schedule, numbering parts so viewers have a reason to follow now. Reply to every question in your comments with a video. Then read New followers on each video's analytics page and make more of the two or three formats with the most follows per 1,000 views. In the five profiles we opened, accounts gained 17 to 192 followers per post, so at the middle rate of about 60, 1,000 followers is roughly 17 posts that land.

How long does it take to get 1,000 followers on TikTok?

TikTok has not published a typical time, and creators report everything from one video to a year. The five accounts we opened, all found on the first page of TikTok's user search for a niche, were between three and five years old, and their followers per post ranged from 17 to 192. A creator posting daily at the middle rate would cross 1,000 in a few weeks; one posting twice a week at the low end would take most of a year. The rate depends far more on the topic and the format than on the calendar.

Do hashtags get followers on TikTok?

Not directly. A hashtag can help TikTok place a video with people who watch that topic, and TikTok caps captions at five hashtags, so use a few that describe the video exactly. Followers come from what happens after the view: the viewer taps your name and finds a profile that promises more of the same. A video tagged perfectly that leads to a mixed profile gains views and no follows. Spend the effort on the first line of the video and the one line of your bio.

Should I follow people back on TikTok?

Follow accounts you want to watch, and nobody else. Follow-for-follow and follow trains fall under what TikTok's Community Guidelines call tricking others into increasing engagement, and that content is ineligible for the For You feed. The followers you gain that way never watch your videos, so the Following share of your views stays near zero and your videos get no boost from your own audience. A following count far above your follower count also reads as a growth trick to anyone who checks your profile.

Why am I losing followers on TikTok?

The usual causes, in order of how often creators report them: TikTok removing fake or inactive accounts in a sweep, which shows as a sudden drop across many accounts at once; a change of topic, where people who followed for one thing stop seeing it; and a run of videos that reached new viewers who followed on impulse and left within days. Open the Followers tab in TikTok Studio, find the day the drop started, and look at what you posted that day and the two days before. If the drop matches a topic change, that is the answer.

Do I need followers to get views on TikTok?

No. TikTok's own explanation of the For You feed says follower count is not a direct factor in recommendations, and the data agrees: in a September 2026 sample of 58 creators, the middle creator under 10,000 followers got about one view per follower on a typical post, while the middle creator over a million got about 3.5 views per 100. Small accounts get their views from strangers in the For You feed and in search. Followers matter for what they unlock, LIVE at 1,000 and Series at 10,000, and for a steady base of viewers who see you in their Following feed, not for reach.
