A good TikTok bio says what your videos are about in the first line, who they are for in the second, and gives one thing to do in the third. That is the whole formula. The 50 tiktok bio ideas below follow it, and they are built from what the profiles TikTok already ranks put in their bios, not from a list someone made up.
We pulled the top 20 accounts TikTok returns for six searches (fitness, cooking, personal finance, skincare, small business, travel) and read the bios of the first five in each. Of those 30 bios, 22 name their topic, 24 point at something to do (a link, a shop, an email, a follow), 4 give a credential and none of them tells a joke. The median bio is 66 characters and 3 lines long.
First the rules TikTok sets, then the numbers, then the 50 ideas, then a one-minute checklist for your own bio.
What a TikTok bio can hold
The bio is one field in Edit profile, next to your photo, nickname, username and links. Here is what fits in it and what does not.
| Field or rule | What applies | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Bio length | 80 characters for years. In August 2025 creators reported the field doubling to 160. 2026 guides disagree, and TikTok's Help Center does not publish a limit. In our sample 6 of 29 bios are over 80 (the longest is 145), so some accounts have the bigger field. | Threads post, 8 Aug 2025; LetterCounter, Jan 2026 (80 to 160); Replug, Jan 2026 (stick to 80); Boomp, Sep 2026 (no published limit); our snapshot |
| Line breaks | Allowed. Each one counts as a character. About three lines show before the profile cuts off on small screens. | Virlo character counter; HowSociable, Apr 2026 |
| Emoji | Allowed. Each counts as one or two characters depending on the emoji. | Virlo; HowSociable, Apr 2026 |
| Hashtags | You can type them, but they are not tappable and do not make you show up in search. They spend characters for nothing. | HowSociable, Apr 2026; TikTok has not published this |
| Website link | A separate field, not part of the bio text. Personal accounts unlock it at 1,000 followers. Business accounts get it with no follower minimum. | Buffer, Dec 2025; Stan Store, Sep 2026 |
| Instagram and YouTube | Separate buttons under Edit profile, Links. No follower requirement. Availability varies by region. | Stan Store, Sep 2026 |
| Nickname | Your display name, up to 30 characters, spaces and emoji allowed. Change it once every 7 days. | TikTok Help Center; Boomp, Sep 2026 |
| Username | Your @handle and profile URL. Letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, up to 24 characters. Change it once every 30 days. | TikTok Help Center; ContentStudio, Jan 2026 |
| Category label | Business accounts pick a category when they switch, and TikTok shows the business name and category on a verified business profile. | TikTok for Business, business registration page |
Rules checked 22 September 2026 against TikTok's username, display name and bio page, Changing your username, the business registration page, Buffer, Stan Store, HowSociable, Virlo, LetterCounter, Replug and Boomp.
On length, the plain answer: write your bio to fit 80 characters. If your Edit profile screen accepts more, use the extra for a second call to action, not the first line. Half the profiles in our sample fit in 66 characters or fewer, and they rank.
The link lives in its own field above the bio, so a URL typed into the bio text is plain text nobody can tap. If you are under 1,000 followers and need a link now, the business account guide explains what you give up to get it, mostly the trending sounds.
What 30 ranking profiles put in their bios
For each of six niche searches we took the first five accounts TikTok returned and classified each bio by what it does. A bio can do several things, so the columns do not add up to five.
| Search | Says the topic | Says who it is for | Gives a credential | Promises a schedule | Asks you to do something | Tells a joke | Says nothing useful | Median length |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| fitness | 5 | 1 | 2 | 0 | 5 | 0 | 0 | 54 |
| cooking | 4 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 48 |
| personal finance | 4 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 79 |
| skincare | 3 | 0 | 1 | 0 | 4 | 0 | 1 | 90 |
| small business | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 4 | 0 | 0 | 54 |
| travel | 5 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 3 | 0 | 0 | 70 |
| All 30 | 22 | 3 | 4 | 1 | 24 | 0 | 2 | 66 |
Data: TikTok user search and profiles via TokConnect, pulled 22 September 2026. 30 profiles, 5 per search, classified by hand. Median length is in characters, over non-empty bios. Open the snapshot.
Four things stand out. Almost everyone says the topic and asks for an action, usually an arrow pointing down at the link: 19 of the 30 bios do that, and 8 include an email for brands. Only 3 say who the videos are for and only 4 offer a credential, so those two lines are open space in most niches.
Nobody jokes. Not one of the 30 bios tries to be funny. That is not proof that jokes hurt, but the accounts TikTok ranks for a topic search describe themselves plainly. If you want humour, keep the topic in the same line.
Half of them bury the topic. Only 11 of the 22 topic-naming bios put it on the first line. The rest open with an email address, a name, a location pin or a row of emoji. Someone arriving from a search reads the first line, so put the topic there.
The small business results are the warning. Four of the five bios ask for an order or a follow, but only one says what the shop sells. "Worldwide shipping" and "link below" tell the reader how to buy without telling them what. Name the product first.
Pull the bios of the 20 accounts TikTok ranks for [my niche] and show me the patterns: how many name the topic in the first line, who they say they are for, what credential they give, what action they ask for, and the median length. Then draft three bios for me that fill the gaps.

50 TikTok bio ideas, in 8 families
Every template and example below is 80 characters or fewer, so it fits the smallest version of the field. Square brackets mark the parts you fill in. The examples use the six niches from our data; where a bio would usually carry a figure, it is in brackets for your real one.
1. Topic-first
The most common pattern in the sample, 22 of 30. The topic is the first thing on the line.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Topic] videos: [sub-topic], [sub-topic] and [sub-topic] | Cooking videos: 20-minute dinners, meal prep and pantry basics |
| All things [topic], explained simply | All things skincare, explained simply |
| [Topic] tips you can use today | Travel tips you can use today |
| Honest [topic] reviews. No sponsors unless I say so. | Honest skincare reviews. No sponsors unless I say so. |
| [Topic] on a budget. [Sub-topic], [sub-topic], [sub-topic]. | Travel on a budget. Cheap flights, hostels, free days out. |
| Real [topic], real [place], no studio | Real cooking, real kitchen, no studio |
| [Topic] Q&A. Ask in the comments, I answer in videos. | Fitness Q&A. Ask in the comments, I answer in videos. |
2. For whom
Only 3 of 30 ranking bios say who the videos are for. In most niches this line is empty space you can take.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Topic] for [who] | Strength training for women over 40 |
| Helping [who] [do the thing] without [the pain] | Helping first-time renters budget without a spreadsheet |
| If you [situation], this page is for you | If you cook for one, this page is for you |
| [Topic] for [who], from someone who [shares the trait] | Skincare for oily skin, from someone who has it |
| For [who] who want [thing] without [thing they hate] | For new travellers who want Europe without the tour bus |
| [Who]: start here ⬇️ | Beginner runners: start here ⬇️ |
3. Credential
4 of 30 bios give one, two of them in fitness, where a coach title is expected. Use a credential you can back up, and real numbers only.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Job title]. [Topic] without the jargon. | Registered dietitian. Nutrition without the jargon. |
| [Credential] | [Topic] videos | Certified personal trainer | Home workouts |
| [N] years as a [job]. Now I teach it here. | [12] years as a chef. Now I teach it here. |
| [Topic] basics from a [profession], not a guru | Money basics from an accountant, not a guru |
| [Topic] by a [profession] who does this every day | Skincare by a facialist who does this every day |
| Former [job], now [topic] full time | Former travel agent, now full-time travel videos |
4. Posting promise
One bio in the sample makes a promise, a milestone ("face reveal at 40k"). A schedule gives a new visitor a reason to follow, not just watch.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| New [topic] video every [day] | New recipe every Tuesday and Friday |
| One [thing] a day for [N] days. Day [x]. | One workout a day for [100] days. Day [x]. |
| A [topic] tip every weekday at [time] | A money tip every weekday at 7am |
| Testing every viral [thing] so you don't have to. New test weekly. | Testing every viral skincare product so you don't have to. Weekly. |
| Every [place] in [region], one video each. [x] done. | Every national park in the USA, one video each. [x] done. |
| Face reveal at [N] followers. Until then, the [product] does the talking. | Face reveal at [40k] followers. Until then, the gloss does the talking. |
5. Business or shop
Say the product before the shipping. The one small business bio in the sample that names its product also gives a price and a website.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Product]. From [price]. Ships [where]. | Handmade phone cases. From [$9.99]. Ships worldwide. |
| [Product] made in small batches. Shop ⬇️ | Lip gloss made in small batches. Shop ⬇️ |
| Built by [experts]. Find us at [retailer] and online. | Built by dermatologists. Find us at [retailer] and online. |
| Orders by DM or the link below. Ships in [N] days. | Custom name necklaces. Order by DM or link below. Ships in [3] days. |
| [Brand]. [Product] for [who]. | [Brand]. Meal-prep containers for people who cook once a week. |
| Official [Brand]. [Topic] tips and new drops. Shop ⬇️ | Official [Brand]. Skincare tips and new drops. Shop ⬇️ |
6. Creator with a link
19 of 30 bios end in an arrow pointing at the link. Say what the link is before you point at it.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Topic]. Free [resource] ⬇️ | Personal finance and investing. Free budget template ⬇️ |
| [Topic]. Full videos on YouTube ⬇️ | Traveling the USA. Full videos on YouTube ⬇️ |
| [Topic] programs and plans ⬇️ | Training and nutrition plans ⬇️ |
| [Topic] ⬇️ Collabs: email in the link | Recipes ⬇️ Collabs: email in the link |
| My free [tool] ⬇️ | My free retirement calculator ⬇️ |
| [Topic] tips here. Deep dives in the newsletter ⬇️ | Skincare tips here. Deep dives in the newsletter ⬇️ |
7. Funny but clear
Zero of the 30 ranking bios joke, so this is the least crowded family. The rule: the topic is in the same sentence as the joke.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Topic]. My [family member] thinks it's a phase. | Sourdough. My husband thinks it's a phase. |
| I [do the topic] so your [thing] doesn't have to | I test skincare so your face doesn't have to |
| [Topic] with [one tool] and zero patience | Cooking with one pan and zero patience |
| Professional [topic person]. Amateur everything else. | Professional budgeter. Amateur everything else. |
| [N] countries, [N] lost bags. [Topic] videos. | [31] countries, [2] lost bags. Travel videos. |
| [Topic]. I still hate [the hard part]. | Strength training. I still hate burpees. |
8. Local business
None of the six searches was local, so this family applies the same rule: product, place, one action. Say the city so local searches find you.
| Template | Example |
|---|---|
| [Type of business] in [city]. [Hours]. | Bakery in [Leeds]. Fresh from 7am, sold out by noon. |
| [City]'s [service]. Book ⬇️ | [Austin]'s mobile car detailing. Book ⬇️ |
| 📍[City]. [What you do]. Walk-ins welcome. | 📍[Denver]. Barbers. Walk-ins welcome. |
| Family-run [business] since [year], [city] | Family-run taqueria since [1998], [San Antonio] |
| [Service] for [area]. Free [first thing] ⬇️ | Personal training for [Manchester]. Free first session ⬇️ |
| We [do the thing] in [city]. Watch us work. | We restore furniture in [Bristol]. Watch us work. |
| [Business], [landmark]. Open [days]. | Skincare studio above the [Main St] pharmacy. Open Tue to Sat. |
"just vibes ✨", a row of emoji, a song lyric, "dm for collabs" with no topic, or two full stops. Two of the 30 ranking profiles have a bio like this and rank on their videos alone. You are not them yet. Someone arriving from a search reads your bio to decide whether the video they just watched is what you always make. If the bio does not answer that, they leave.
The one-minute bio checklist
- Your topic is in the first 40 characters. Not your name, not an email, not a location pin. 11 of the 22 topic-naming bios in our sample manage this; the others make the reader work.
- You say who it is for. "Beginners", "women over 40", "people who cook for one". Three words that make the right person feel found.
- There is exactly one action. Link, DM, shop, follow. Pick one and point at it. Two actions split the click.
- It fits in 80 characters. Count emoji as two and each line break as one. If your field takes more, the extra goes after the action, never before the topic.
- No hashtags. They are not tappable in a bio and do not put you in search. Use the words instead.
- The link field is set. If you are under 1,000 followers on a personal account, decide whether the business switch is worth it or connect Instagram and YouTube instead.
- Your nickname says something too. It is 30 characters that show above the bio. "Sam | Budget Travel" works harder than "sam".
If your topic is still fuzzy, fix that before the bio. The find a niche guide shows how to pick one from what people search, and the niches list has 40 of them with real search numbers.
Nickname, username and the rest of the profile
People mix these up. The username is your @handle. It is unique, it forms your profile URL, it allows only letters, numbers, underscores and full stops, and it changes once every 30 days. The nickname is the display name above your videos. It can have spaces and emoji, does not have to be unique, holds 30 characters, and changes once every 7 days.
Use them differently. The username should be short, spellable and stable, because people type it; the username ideas guide covers how to pick one. The nickname is free space for your topic: "Priya | Skincare for Oily Skin" tells a searcher what you do before they read the bio.
Below the bio sit the link buttons. Instagram and YouTube connect under Links with no follower requirement. TikTok shows one website link, so if you need several, point it at a page that lists them.
A TikTok bio for a business account
A business account changes two things about the profile. You get the website field with no follower minimum, and you pick a category when you switch, which TikTok shows on verified business profiles alongside the business name. The trade is the music: business accounts can only use the Commercial Music Library, not the trending sounds. The business versus creator guide walks through the switch.
The bio follows the same three lines, with the product where a creator puts the topic. The skincare brand in our sample opens with who built the product and then lists where to buy it: a credential, then an action. The handmade shops skip the product and go straight to the link, which is the pattern to avoid. Product, who it is for, where to get it. Then stop.
A profile only works when someone lands on it. The followers guide covers how people get there, starting with videos about things they already search for.
Frequently asked questions
What should I put in my TikTok bio?
Three things, in this order: what your videos are about, who they are for, and one thing to do (tap the link, DM, shop, follow). In the 30 ranking bios we read, 22 name the topic and 24 ask for an action, so those two are table stakes. Only 3 say who the videos are for, which makes that line the easiest way to stand out. Skip hashtags, song lyrics and "just vibes".
How long can a TikTok bio be?
TikTok's Help Center does not publish a number. The field was 80 characters for years. In August 2025 creators reported it doubling to 160, and 2026 guides still disagree, some saying 80 and some 160. In our September 2026 sample, 6 of 29 bios are longer than 80 characters and the longest is 145, so at least some accounts have the bigger field. Write a bio that works at 80 characters, then use any extra room for a second line, not the first. Emoji count as one or two characters and each line break counts as one.
How do I add a link to my TikTok bio?
The link is its own field, not part of the bio text. Open your profile, tap Edit profile, and look for Website (or Add under Links). On a personal account the website field appears once you have 1,000 followers. On a business account there is no follower minimum, but you lose the trending sounds. Instagram and YouTube buttons can be added from the same Links section with no follower requirement. A URL typed into the bio text itself is not tappable.
Can I put hashtags in my bio?
You can type them, but they do nothing. Hashtags in a TikTok bio are not tappable and do not make your profile appear in searches for that tag, according to 2026 guides; TikTok has not published a rule either way. They cost characters you need for the topic. Write the words plainly instead: "skincare for oily skin" reads better than "#skincare #oilyskin" and says the same thing.
What is a good bio for a business?
Product, who it is for, where to get it. For example: "Handmade phone cases. From [price]. Ships worldwide." then the website link in the link field. The mistake we saw most in small business profiles was asking for the order before saying what is for sale: four of five bios in that search ask you to DM, follow or tap a link, and only one names its product. If you have a credential, such as who made or tested the product, put it first. Our business account guide covers the website link and category label.
How often should I change my bio?
Whenever the offer changes: a new free resource, a new series, a milestone you are counting toward, a seasonal product. TikTok puts no limit on bio edits. Your username can only change once every 30 days and your nickname once every 7, so treat those as fixed and let the bio carry the news. Leave the topic line alone once it works; people who followed you for that topic should still recognise the profile.
