To find a niche worth building on, start from one broad interest, pull TikTok's search topics for six to eight seed phrases inside it, then go one level down into the micro-niches and score each on four things: searches in the last week, how many videos already exist, where the searchers live, and whether the demand held up over 30 days.

Do it on TikTok rather than Google, because TikTok publishes a search count instead of an index. Google Trends gives you a 0–100 relative number and says in its own docs that it is not absolute volume and that low-volume terms read as zero. TikTok's Creator Search Insights gives you the searches, the video count and the audience split for the same phrase, free.

Below is the whole method run end to end on one interest, home aquariums, with numbers pulled on 19 September 2026. Then 30 micro-niches across eight interests, ten of which have no videos matched to them at all.

How to find a niche in four steps

The job is to find a topic where enough people are already asking a question and not enough people are answering it. Four passes get you there.

  1. Seed. Pick a broad interest and search six to eight phrases inside it. You are looking for the phrasing people actually type, not the category name.
  2. Narrow. Take the two or three best seeds and pull their related topics and autocomplete. Micro-niches live one level below the seed.
  3. Score. For each candidate, record 7-day searches, video count, audience country and a 30-day series.
  4. Pick. Highest searches-per-video that is in your market and still there next month.

Two numbers do most of the work. Search popularity is what TikTok shows on a topic page: searches over the last seven days, global unless you set a country (more on how to read it). Video count is how many videos TikTok has matched to that topic, and it is your competition. Divide one by the other and you get the number that matters. Shrimp ecosystem tank runs 261,021 searches against 443 videos, or 589 searches per video. Sewing a quilt runs 142,714 against 1,109 videos, or 129. Similar demand, very different room.

Step 1: six seeds inside one interest

The interest here is home aquariums. It sells hardware, it sells software, it sells a newsletter, and it is not a niche yet. Six searches, twelve topics each:

SeedTopics that read like a person typed themExample7-day searchesVideos
aquarium0 of 12none

shrimp tank7 of 12shrimp tank setup213,193575

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Open the snapshot.

The pattern is the whole point. The broadest seed was the least useful: every topic returned for aquarium was a stitched-together phrase like "aquariums and aquarium attractions" or "cars as aquarium decorations", filed under categories such as Tourism and Biology Knowledge, each between 3.6 and 4.8 million searches. Nobody types those. The narrowest seed, shrimp tank, returned seven phrases a hobbyist would recognise.

So the first rule of seeding is to go narrower than feels sensible. If a seed comes back with nothing but multi-concept phrases in the millions, it is too broad. Try the thing the hobby calls itself.

Step 2: one level down, into the micro-niches

Two seeds were worth following: shrimp tanks and reef tanks. Pulling related topics and autocomplete for each turned up the micro-niches that the seed search missed.

Micro-niche found one level down7-day searchesVideosWhere it came from
coral reef aquarium for beginners132,8390related topics
how to cycle a tank for betta132,133352related topics
planted tank for beginners81,875501related topics

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Open the snapshot.

Related topics is a mixed bag. The list for shrimp tank setup also contained "the north face 700 puffer jacket" and "gyaru tutorial", so read it, keep what belongs to your interest and ignore the rest.

Autocomplete does a different job: it shows you the words, including the language. Three of the fifteen suggestions for nano reef came back in Spanish ("nano reef 30 litros", "nano reef 40 litros", "nano reef 18lts"), a warning about the audience before you check it properly.

Step 3: score four candidates

Four survived. Here they are on searches and room:

Candidate7-day searchesVideosSearches per video

shrimp tank setup213,193575371
coral reef aquarium for beginners132,8390no videos at all
reef tank for beginners106,289494215

Then the question that decides whether any of it is yours: who is searching. TikTok returns an audience split per topic, as shares of the people it could classify.

reef tank for beginnersUS 83%Malaysia 9%44%61%

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Open the snapshot.

That reshuffles the ranking. If you are selling to the US, shrimp tank setup's 213,193 searches are really about 81,000, because 62% of the demand sits elsewhere. Shrimp ecosystem tank keeps all of its 261,021.

Last, stability. A 30-day pull showed shrimp tank setup moving between 123,386 and 533,785 a day and coral reef aquarium for beginners between 52,641 and 421,132, both with a value on all 30 days. That is what a real niche looks like: noisy, always there, going nowhere in particular.

The pick: beginner coral reef tanks, with shrimp ecosystem tanks as the second bet. 132,839 weekly searches, a US audience, a month of history, and not one video matched to it. That is a newsletter, a stocking-calculator app and an affiliate list, in a niche where the hardware costs hundreds of dollars.

I want to find a niche inside [your broad interest]. Search TikTok topics for six narrow seed phrases in it. Drop any topic whose wording nobody would type. For the ten best survivors, give me 7-day searches, video count and searches per video in a table, then pull the audience country split for the top four and a 30-day series for the top two. Flag anything with no 30-day history. End with your pick and why.

30 micro-niche ideas with their search demand

Same method, eight interests. Every row is a phrase a person types, with TikTok's own numbers next to it. "Gap" means TikTok has matched no videos to the topic.

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Snapshots: aquarium seeds, one level down, seven interests, narrowed seeds, two more interests.

The last two rows earn their place by being disappointing. Ultralight backpacking was the one usable phrase out of thirty topics across two backpacking searches, and making candles has 5,579 videos against 106,568 searches: nineteen searches per video, so candle making is not a niche you enter on search. Compare the ADHD block, where three of four micro-niches have demand and no videos.

A fresh list of flagged gaps across every category is on the content gaps page, refreshed weekly, and TikTok niches ranked by search demand has the same analysis at category level.

Four niche traps in this data

1. Topics TikTok generated that nobody searches

This is the big one, and it will cost you a week if you miss it. Three topics from the aquarium searches:

Topic7-day searchesVideos7-day series, first day to last
cars as aquarium decorations4,780,30809,895 → 4,780,308
aquarium sliding lids and setups4,575,04209,199 → 4,575,042
turmeric use in fish tanks4,318,33908,395 → 4,318,339

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. 30-day check.

Three unrelated topics, three near-identical curves, all starting around 9,000 and landing near 4.5 million in the same seven days. When we asked for 30 days of history on "aquarium sliding lids and setups", TikTok returned no data points at all. A topic with 4.5 million weekly searches and no history is a cluster TikTok generated around your search. Its headline figure is TikTok's estimate for the whole cluster, not evidence that people type that phrase, so treat it as a category-level signal and build on the narrower topics that carry their own history. The signature: two nouns joined by "and", a popularity score of 86 or 87, millions of searches.

2. Demand that lives in another country

A global number is not your number. Shrimp tank setup looks like a 213,193-search niche and is a 81,000-search niche in the US, with the rest in Malaysia, the Philippines, Canada and Singapore. Check the split before you price anything, and check it on the exact topic, because the split changed a lot between the four candidates above.

3. Two-day spikes wearing a weekly number

10 gallon reef tank reports 89,791 searches. Its seven daily figures are 199, 258,874, 50,594, 1,399, 236,676, 0 and 89,791. Refugium reef tank reports 55,672 from a week with three days at or near zero. A number carried by two days is a news event or a measurement artefact, not a business. Pull the 30-day series on anything you are serious about.

4. A content gap with nothing behind it

Zero videos is only interesting when the searches are real. The related topics for shrimp tanks included "how to build a shrimp-friendly tank" and "beginner shrimp tank setup guide", both with zero videos and both with 199 searches. That is not an opening, it is an empty room. Set a floor, treat anything under 20,000 weekly searches as noise, and read what the content gap flag actually measures before you build a content plan on it.

Where the data comes from

Every number here is TikTok's own, from Creator Search Insights. It lives in the TikTok app and, since mid-2025, on desktop at tiktok.com/csi with a login. Neither surface exports, and neither shows you 30 topics side by side, which is why the pulls above went through an agent instead. How the tool works.

The method costs about half an hour per interest. Pieter Levels ran a blunter version across 30 startup ideas on TikTok, posting and watching what sold. Search data gets you to the same answer before you build the thing. The founder workflow has the rest of the loop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my niche?

Pick a broad interest you can talk about weekly, then narrow it with data rather than with brainstorming. Search six to eight specific phrases inside that interest in TikTok's Creator Search Insights, note the 7-day searches and video count for each, then follow the best two into their related topics and autocomplete. The niche is the phrase with demand in the tens or hundreds of thousands, few videos answering it, and an audience in your country. The scorecard above is the version you can copy.

What is a good niche in 2026?

One where searches per video is high and the demand is still there after 30 days. On 19 September 2026 that included beginner coral reef aquariums (132,839 weekly searches, no videos matched), smearing technique in bouldering (263,920, no videos) and ADHD routines for mothers (102,089, no videos). A good niche is specific enough that someone types the exact words, and expensive or difficult enough that they keep coming back.

What niches are in demand?

TikTok flags the ones where searching outruns supply as content gaps. In the 30 micro-niches on this page, the gaps cluster in aquariums, ADHD routines and quilting rather than in crowded hobbies: candle making has 5,579 videos against 106,568 searches, which leaves no room. The content gaps page lists this week's flagged topics across every category, and TikTok niches ranked by search demand does it at category level.
