A TikTok content gap is a topic people search for on TikTok that almost no videos answer. TikTok works out which searches it cannot serve well, and shows you the list inside Creator Search Insights under Suggested → Content gap. Make a video that answers one of those searches and you are competing against an empty shelf.
That is the whole idea, and it is the single most useful thing in TikTok's creator tools. The rest of this page is the detail nobody explains: what the "videos" number counts, ten real gaps with their search numbers, how to find gaps in your own niche instead of waiting for TikTok to suggest them, and how long a gap actually stays open.
Where the content gap list lives
There is no menu item for it. You get there through search.
- Open the TikTok app and tap the search icon.
- Type creator search insights and search.
- Tap View on the card at the top of the results.
- Stay on the Suggested channel and tap the Content gap tab.

The tab has been there since TikTok launched Creator Search Insights in March 2024, and TikTok's own write-up sits on its Creator Academy content gap page.
Two things to know before you trust the list. It is personalised, so a cooking account and a car account see different gaps. And it has no export and no way to look at last month's list, in the app or at tiktok.com/csi. The full Creator Search Insights guide covers the rest of the tool, and the desktop guide covers getting at the same data from a computer.
What the "videos" number actually counts
Every topic in Creator Search Insights carries a video count, and a gap is flagged when that count is tiny next to the search number. Most people read "0 videos" as "nobody has posted about this". That is not what it means.
The count is how many videos TikTok has matched to the topic cluster. It is not a count of every video that mentions the words.
Here is the proof. On 19 September 2026 the topic "dog sitting poses and training" showed 4,417,241 searches in seven days and a video count of 0. Ask TikTok for the videos it would show a searcher for that topic and you get seven, the top one posted in November 2022 with 1,040,030 plays.
| Field | Value for "dog sitting poses and training" |
|---|---|
| Search popularity, 7 days | 4,417,241 |
| Popularity score | 86 / 100 |
| Videos matched to the topic | 0 |
| Videos TikTok search actually returns | 7 |
| Top result | @maligatormom, posted November 2022, 1,040,030 plays |

So there is dog content. There are millions of dog videos. What is missing is a video TikTok is confident enough to file under this search: a clip from 2022 about a Malinois doing a sit-front is not an answer to "how do I teach my dog to sit pretty". The gap is not an empty subject. It is an unanswered question.
Search number = how many people asked. Video number = how many answers TikTok found. A gap is the distance between the two, and the distance is what you fill.
Ten real content gaps, with their numbers
These came off TikTok's content gap channel on 19 September 2026. Of the 80 topics in that pull, 78 had a video count of zero.
| Content-gap topic | 7-day searches | Videos | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| gsx r1 | 13,165,748 | 0 | Motor vehicles |

Notice the lawn mowing row. It has 789 matched videos and TikTok still calls it a gap, because 789 answers against 2.2 million searches is thin. Zero is the common case, not the rule.
Notice the spread too. The top two topics are somebody else's week: a Suzuki model number and an iPhone interface feature, both riding a news cycle. "Chips you can eat with braces" is 50 times smaller and 50 times more useful to a real creator, because it is a question a person will still be typing in March.
How to find a TikTok content gap in your own niche
TikTok's suggested list is a lottery. The reliable method is to search your niche and read the two numbers side by side.
The app route
Inside Creator Search Insights, use the search bar at the top. Type the thing you actually make videos about, not a trend word. You get topic clusters with a search figure each. Open the ones that look relevant and check the video count on the topic page. Anything with a big search number and a small video count is your shortlist. Screenshot it, because you cannot export it.
The agent route
If you would rather see the whole niche at once, ask for it. This is one search for "dog training", ten topics, sorted the way that matters:
| Topic | 7-day searches | Videos | Gap? |
|---|---|---|---|
| dog sitting poses and training | 4,417,241 | 0 | Yes |
| small dog care and training | 4,190,056 | 0 | Yes |
| dog care and puppy training | 4,105,631 | 743 | No |
| working dog breeds and training | 3,704,988 | 541 | No |
| dog age care and training | 3,571,856 | 414 | No |
| dog training tricks and tips | 3,330,032 | 773 | No |
| dog care and training tips | 2,775,267 | 741 | No |
| dog paw and hand training | 2,000,999 | 265 | No |
| Trained dogs | 257,925 | 0 | Yes |
| Dog Training Tips | 143,756 | 0 | Yes |

Two topics above four million searches have nothing filed against them, sitting next to near-identical topics with 700-plus videos. That comparison is the job, and it takes one question when the data is in your chat window:
Search TikTok topics for "dog training" and pull 20 results. Make a table of topic, 7-day searches, video count and searches per video. Flag every topic with under 100 videos as a content gap, then look at each flagged topic's 7-day trend and tell me which ones are steady rather than spiking. For the top three, write an on-screen text line that uses the topic's exact wording.
Swap "dog training" for your niche. The same shape of answer works for keyword research generally, which the keyword research guide walks through step by step.
Which gaps are worth filling
A gap with a huge number on it can still be a bad idea. The 7-day trend tells you which is which.
| Topic | Daily searches, oldest to newest | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| gsx r1 | 0 · 0 · 0 · 0 · 41,712 · 25,609,879 · 13,165,748 | An event. Nothing, then 25 million in a day, then falling |
| chips you can eat with braces | 229,585 · 204,097 · 96,951 · 56,371 · 106,746 · 155,422 · 266,166 | A question people ask every week |

The first one is unwinnable unless you were already filming when it broke. By the time you have edited, the wave has passed and a hundred faster accounts have posted. The second one pays for months, and it is small enough that a good answer ranks.
My rule: take the gap if you can answer it credibly, if the trend line is flat or climbing rather than falling off a spike, and if it sits in the niche your account is already about. Search rewards the account that keeps answering the same kind of question.
How to make a video that fills the gap
The gap closes for you only if TikTok files your video under that topic. That means saying the search out loud.
- Say the phrase in the first three seconds. Out loud, not just in text. TikTok transcribes audio and reads it as a ranking signal.
- Put it on screen too. "Chips you can eat with braces" as a title card beats any caption trick.
- Answer in the first line. No "stay till the end". The searcher wants the answer; giving it immediately is what makes them watch the rest.
- Use the topic's wording, not your clever version. "Sit pretty tutorial" is what you would call it. "How to teach your dog to sit pretty" is what people type.
- Cover one search per video. A video that answers three questions gets filed under none of them.
Hashtags are not the lever here. A gap is a search problem, and captions, spoken words and on-screen text are what search reads. The TikTok SEO guide has the full checklist.
How fast does a gap close?
Slower than you would think for evergreen questions, and faster than you can film for news.
The honest answer is that nobody outside TikTok has a measured close rate, and we are not going to make one up. What we can see week to week is how the list behaves: the event-driven topics turn over almost completely, and the quiet how-to questions come back again and again. "Chips you can eat with braces" has no obvious reason to be answered, because the people who could answer it are orthodontists and snack reviewers, and neither is chasing a badge in a creator tool.
A topic can also leave the gap list without anyone filling it. TikTok regenerates these clusters, and a phrase can get merged into a bigger topic, recategorised, or dropped from your personalised set because your account changed. Falling off the list is not proof that the audience went away.
Practically: if a gap matches your niche, film it this week. If it is still open next week, film the follow-up. We refresh the content gaps list every week so you can see which topics survived, and the search volume guide explains what the numbers on them mean.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TikTok content gap?
It is a label TikTok puts on topics that people search for often but that few videos answer. TikTok shows the list in Creator Search Insights, in the Suggested channel under the Content gap tab, with a 7-day search count and a video count for each topic. The list is personalised to your account, so yours will differ from another creator's.
What is a content gap?
In search generally, a content gap is a question an audience is asking that nobody has answered well. On TikTok the platform does the finding for you: it compares how many people searched a topic in the last seven days with how many videos it has matched to that topic, and flags the ones where the second number is tiny.
How do I find content gaps on TikTok?
Two ways. In the app or at tiktok.com/csi, open Creator Search Insights, tap Suggested then Content gap, or use the search bar to look up your niche and compare each topic's searches against its video count. Outside TikTok you can pull the same fields for any keyword with a connected agent and sort the whole niche at once.
Does a content gap mean nobody has posted about it?
No. It means TikTok has not matched videos to that topic cluster. There is usually plenty of related content, it just does not answer the search directly enough for TikTok to file it there. That is why saying the exact phrase in your audio, caption and on-screen text matters so much.
