Why do some prompts fail without live TikTok data?
Because ChatGPT cannot see inside TikTok. TikTok's search numbers live in Creator Search Insights, a tool in the TikTok app and at tiktok.com/csi that needs a TikTok login and has no export or public API. A chatbot's web search cannot open it. So when you ask "what is trending in fitness on TikTok this week", the model fills the gap with things that sound likely.
That guess is usually built from old articles about TikTok, not from TikTok. You get confident numbers that nobody measured and "trends" that peaked months ago. The fix is to hand it the data. There are three ways, from least to most effort:
- Paste the numbers. Copy search counts from Creator Search Insights, or views and watch time from TikTok Studio, straight into the chat.
- Upload a file. ChatGPT and Claude both read CSV and spreadsheet files. TikTok Business Hub has a Download data button that exports your organic results as CSV or XLSX, according to Metricool (June 2026). If your account has no export, copy the numbers by hand.
- Connect an MCP server. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a standard way to give an AI assistant tools it can call. With a TikTok MCP server connected, the assistant pulls search volumes, autocomplete and video stats itself. For six of the eight topics the search count matched our 19 September pull while the video counts had moved, so read label numbers as rough size. Open the snapshot.
Autocomplete returned these ten phrases for "meal prep", in TikTok's order: meal prep ideas for a week, meal prep, meal prep high protein low cal meals, meal prep weighltloss (TikTok's spelling), meal prep for gym, meal prep high protein, meal prep for family, Meal Prep Lunch Ideas, meal prep cho 1 tuần (Vietnamese, "for one week"), and meal prep for school.
Two things in that data change what you would film. Meal prep with what you have had about 1.4 million searches and zero videos listed, which is a gap nobody has filled. And the phrases people actually type are about a week, protein, the gym and family, so those words belong in your first spoken sentence. A model with no data would not know either.
If ChatGPT gives you a search volume, a view count, a "trending sound" or a statistic you did not paste in, treat it as made up until you find it yourself. Ask "where did that number come from?" If the answer is not your file, a tool it called, or a link you can open, delete the number before it goes into a caption, a pitch deck or a client report.

Both big AI companies publish prompting guides, and they agree on the basics. Here is what they say, turned into TikTok terms.
- Give it context. Name your niche, who watches, video length and tone. Anthropic's guide says to treat the model like a brilliant but new employee who knows nothing about your norms.
- Say what the output looks like. "10 hooks, each under 12 words" beats "some hooks". Both OpenAI and Anthropic recommend spelling out format and limits.
- Paste your best captions as examples. This is what the guides call few-shot prompting. Anthropic suggests three to five examples; OpenAI suggests a varied handful.
- Ask for ten, then pick. The first answer is rarely the best. Choosing from a list is faster than rewriting one.
- Refine in the same chat. OpenAI's ChatGPT prompting guide recommends working iteratively and naming the tone you want, like friendly or serious. Say "shorter" or "less salesy" rather than starting over.
