Best AI for TikTok research: ChatGPT vs Claude vs Perplexity vs Gemini

The best AI for TikTok research depends on the job. None of ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity or Gemini has TikTok's own numbers built in: no search volume, no view counts from TikTok, no comments. TikTok's robots.txt also tells all four vendors' AI bots to stay off the site. For quick video ideas, any of them will do. To analyse a TikTok export you upload, Claude runs code on every plan, Free included; ChatGPT and Gemini analyse spreadsheets too. For live TikTok numbers you have to connect a TikTok data source through MCP, the standard way to plug tools into an assistant. Claude allows one custom connector on Free. ChatGPT needs Plus at $20 a month, on the web only. Perplexity needs Pro at $20 a month. Gemini needs Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month, and only in the US.

How do ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Gemini compare for TikTok research?

On the four things that matter for TikTok work, they are closer than the marketing suggests. All four search the web and read files. None reads TikTok's data. The real differences are which plan lets you add a custom connector, and what that plan costs.

Can any AI assistant read TikTok on its own?

No. There are two walls, and web search gets past neither.

The first is TikTok's robots.txt, the file that tells bots which pages they may visit. In the copy the Internet Archive saved on 28 September 2026, TikTok disallows the whole site for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Google-Extended and Gemini-Deep-Research, among others. The vendors treat that differently. Anthropic says its bots honour robots.txt. OpenAI says the rules "may not apply" to pages a user asks for. Perplexity says its user fetcher generally ignores them. So ChatGPT or Perplexity may still open a TikTok link. We did not test whether TikTok serves them anything useful.

The second wall matters more. Even a page that loads holds no search demand. TikTok shows how often people search for something in Creator Search Insights, which lives in the TikTok app and, since mid-2025, on desktop at tiktok.com/csi with a TikTok login. Neither surface has an export, a history view or an API. So when an assistant tells you what people search on TikTok, it is repeating a web article or guessing. What is each assistant best at for TikTok work?

ChatGPT

Good for brainstorming hooks and scripts, and for uploaded files: the pricing table lists data analysis on every plan, limited on Free. For live TikTok data you add a remote MCP server in developer mode, which OpenAI lists for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web. OpenAI's help page says MCP apps are web only, not mobile. The developer docs list OAuth or no sign-in for connecting a server; API keys are not among the options.

Claude

The cheapest documented way to put live TikTok data in an assistant. Anthropic's connector page says custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, in Claude, Cowork and Claude Desktop, with Free limited to one. Claude also runs code on uploaded CSV files on every plan, which suits a comments export or a TikTok Studio download.

Perplexity

Best when you want web articles with citations, such as "what did news outlets say about this TikTok trend?" Its Pro help page lists CSV uploads. Its 13 March 2026 changelog opened custom MCP connectors to Pro, Max and Enterprise, with OAuth, API key or no sign-in. One older help page, last edited 8 September 2026, still says remote MCP is "coming soon", so expect some rough edges.

Gemini

Strong on files: Google's upload page allows up to 10 files per prompt and will chart an uploaded spreadsheet. Custom MCP apps are the narrow part. They only work inside Gemini Spark, which Google offers to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, and the custom apps page adds: 18 or over, in the US, personal Google Account, Keep Activity on, English only.

Five TikTok research questions, answered with live data

Here is what an assistant gains once a TikTok data source is connected. We asked TikTok's data five questions a matcha brand might ask, on 30 September 2026, using TokConnect's tools. These are TikTok's own numbers, not an assistant's write-up.

1. What's trending in food this week?

The trending food list was all TikTok topic labels: phrases TikTok generates to group searches, usually above 5 million. The top one, "api streak steak", showed 22,146,253 searches. "Ranking viral breakfast burritos" had 16,191,255 searches but only 213 videos. Labels are useful for formats (ranking, "viral X to test") rather than exact words to put in a caption.

2. What do people search about your product?

The typed search "matcha lattes" had 299,250 searches and 4,306 videos. Around it sat 14 TikTok labels above 2 million, and four of them, including "pink matcha latte recipes" (4,790,236) and "blue matcha latte drinks" (3,150,654), had no videos at all. The label "hot matcha latte recipes" went from 9,295 on day one of its 7-day chart to 4,604,696 on day seven, which fits a seasonal switch from iced to hot. 3. Is demand rising or falling?

Over 30 days, "matcha lattes" did not trend in one direction. Daily searches swung between 82,014 (20 September) and 299,249 (30 September). The first week averaged 203,904 and the last week 210,576, so the month was roughly flat, with a climb over the final five days. TikTok's 7-day audience panel showed mostly women searching, 18 to 24 as the top age group, and Mexico as the top location, ahead of the US.

4. Which videos win the search?

We pulled the top 14 videos for "matcha latte recipe". Six passed a million plays. The biggest, a Turkish "cloud matcha" recipe, had 14,228,217 plays and 151,448 saves. Two captions promise no special tools and three say "at home", which matches what the comments ask for in question 5.

5. What do viewers ask in the comments?

On the video with 4,945,953 plays, we read 50 of its 798 comments. Twenty were questions. Seven asked where to buy good matcha or which brand to use, four asked what to do without a whisk, and three asked what matcha tastes like. The most-liked comment, with 1,122 likes, was a tip about the glass. How we checked

On 30 September 2026 we read each vendor's pricing page and the help or docs pages linked above, and saved the exact wording in one file. ChatGPT's pricing page showed local currency from our location, so its US price comes from OpenAI's Plus help article. The TikTok data came from 9 tool calls: trending food topics, two topic searches, a 30-day search history, audience, two video searches, 50 comments and hashtags. One day in the 30-day history, 29 September, returned 298 against a range of 82,014 to 299,249 on every other day; we treat it as a gap and leave it out.
