"TikTok made me buy it" is what people type, and tag, when a video talks them into a purchase. As a hashtag, #tiktokmademebuyit collects those videos into one running feed of finds. As a search, "tiktok made me buy it" is how shoppers go looking for the next thing worth buying. The phrase has been on TikTok since 2020, and it now sits at the centre of how the app sells.

This page explains where the phrase came from, how it works as both a hashtag and a search term, and what ranks under it right now. If you shop, create or sell, there is a short section for you near the end. Every number below comes from a data pull you can open.

What "TikTok made me buy it" means

It does two jobs at once.

As a hashtag, a creator adds #tiktokmademebuyit to a clip of something they bought, so the video joins the pile of finds other people are already scrolling. As a search, a shopper types the phrase into the search bar and browses that pile on demand, without waiting for the For You feed (the main video stream TikTok picks for you) to serve one up.

So the phrase is a shopping intent, not a product. People who type "tiktok made me buy it products" are not looking for one item. They want the running list of things TikTok has convinced other people to buy, so they can pick their own.

Where the phrase came from

The tag started in 2020, when people began posting the things they had bought after seeing them on TikTok. The earliest well-documented example is from November 2020, when a pair of leggings went viral and the "TikTok leggings" clip pulled in millions of views over the following months, according to a Trusted Shops write-up published 24 May 2022.

From there it snowballed. The same piece put the hashtag at about 3.5 billion views in May 2022. By June 2022 it had reached 10.1 billion, and it has since passed 44.8 billion views. The trend outgrew the app: shops started labelling shelves with it, and it helped push TikTok toward launching TikTok Shop, its in-app store.

The numbers: how big it is now

Two things are worth measuring: the hashtag, and the search.

On the hashtag side, TikTok's own search does not return one tidy tag. It returns a family of spellings. Across just the five variants TikTok surfaced for us, the videos add up to about 4.2 billion views and more than 808,000 posts, and the largest single spelling on its own carries about 2.3 billion views. Even the misspellings are enormous, which tells you how many people reach for this phrase without checking how it is written.

On the search side, the phrase is a genuine, high-demand query inside TikTok's own keyword tool. Search popularity is the number of searches for a topic over the last seven days, worldwide unless a country is picked.

The gap between the two big rows and the small ones matters. Millions of people a week search wordings that TikTok has barely any video for, while the polished "tiktok shop made me buy it" query already has 35,000 videos fighting over it. Demand is not where the finished videos are.

What ranks under the phrase now

We pulled the most-liked videos TikTok returns for "tiktok made me buy it" and sorted them by what they were selling. Nine came back. Kitchen and cooking gadgets led, tied with seasonal and deal roundups, then a spread of tech, home, health, pet and how-to clips.

The format is consistent. These are short demos, not talking-head reviews. The median clip ran about 19 seconds, and most of that time is the product doing its one satisfying thing: a carrot slicer feeding itself, a dish brush spinning, a power bank that folds up small. The top clip pulled 56 million plays; the middle of the pack sat near 2.7 million.

The other tell is saves. On the useful items, people tap save far more than they comment. A spinning dish brush picked up 12,000 saves against under 1,000 comments. A save is a shopping list. When a video earns saves, viewers are parking it to buy later, which is the strongest signal that a "tiktok made me buy it" clip is actually working.

All of this is why TikTok is now a shopping search engine, not just a feed. People search it the way they once searched Google or Amazon, and TikTok publishes the search numbers to prove it. The scale of those queries, and how they compare to Google, is laid out in our TikTok search statistics.

If you are a shopper

The phrase is a good way to find things and a bad way to judge them. A viral video shows you the product at its best, filmed by someone who often earns a commission when you buy. Do two checks before you spend.

First, read the comments, not just the caption. The honest reviews live there: whether it broke, whether it arrived, whether the seller replied. On a video with thousands of comments you cannot scroll to the useful ones, so search inside them for words like "broke", "refund", "scam" or "worth it". Our TikTok comment finder guide shows how to pull the comments that matter.

Second, watch for the fake-message scam. TikTok Shop keeps orders, payments and messages inside the app. It will not send you a direct message to "confirm" an order, ask you to pay somewhere else, or hand over a code. Treat any such message as a scam, whoever it claims to be. What TikTok Shop is, and how a real order works, is covered in what is TikTok Shop.

The one mistake to avoid

Do not buy because a video went viral. Views measure how watchable a clip is, not whether the product holds up. Buy because the comments hold up: real buyers, recent dates, answered complaints. If the comments are switched off or all one word, keep your money.

If you are a creator or affiliate

The phrase rewards showing, not telling. The videos that rank are demos where the product earns its own reaction, filmed close and cut short. Put what the thing is in your first line of on-screen text and say it out loud, because TikTok's search reads both.

The hashtag itself does not rank you for a product. It files your video into the finds feed. To be found for a specific item, use that item's plain wording in your caption and on-screen text. If you want to tag products and earn commission, you have to qualify first: the follower count, age and other rules are in TikTok affiliate requirements.

If you are a seller

The opportunity is not the crowded phrase. It is the product searches with demand and no video. TikTok groups searches into topic clusters and flags the ones with almost nothing filed under them. Here are ten product topics from our latest pull that people search in the millions each week, with zero videos matched.

Frequently asked questions

What does "TikTok made me buy it" mean?

It is the phrase people use when a TikTok video talked them into buying something. As the hashtag #tiktokmademebuyit it collects videos of those purchases, and as a search it is how shoppers browse other people's finds. It is a shopping intent, not a single product.

When did the TikTok made me buy it trend start?

The tag started appearing in 2020, as people posted the things they bought after seeing them on TikTok. One early, well-documented example is a pair of "TikTok leggings" that went viral in November 2020. It has grown every year since and helped push TikTok toward launching TikTok Shop.

How many views does #tiktokmademebuyit have?

The canonical hashtag has passed 44.8 billion views, up from about 10.1 billion in June 2022. TikTok's own search also returns a family of misspellings, and even those five variants together hold roughly 4.2 billion views, which shows how many people reach for the phrase.

How do I find good tiktok made me buy it products?

Search the phrase, then judge each item by its comments rather than its view count. Look for recent buyers, answered complaints, and words like "broke" or "refund". A high view count means a watchable video, not a product that holds up.

Does the #tiktokmademebuyit hashtag help my video get found?

Not for a specific product. The hashtag files your video into the finds feed, but TikTok's search ranks you on the words in your caption, on-screen text and voiceover. Put the plain name of the item there, in the first seconds, to be found for it.

Is TikTok made me buy it worth it for sellers?

The crowded phrase itself is hard to win, but TikTok flags product searches with millions of weekly searches and almost no video matched. Make one clear video for a gap like that, say the words in it, and you become the answer to a search with no competition.
