Most startup ideas lists are guesses. Somebody sat down, thought hard about what people might want, and wrote twenty bullet points. This list is different: every idea below is a topic people typed into TikTok's search bar in the last seven days, with the search count next to it and the number of videos TikTok has matched to it. All of it was pulled on 19 September 2026.

TikTok publishes its own search numbers through Creator Search Insights, which it launched in March 2024. That makes it the largest free source of demand data a solo founder can reach. Millions of people describe a problem in their own words every week, and TikTok counts them. You get the phrasing and the size of the crowd in the same place.

The rows with a 0 in the Videos column are the interesting ones. TikTok has demand for that phrasing and almost nothing filed against it, which means the question is being asked and not answered. That is a distribution opening before it is a product opening, and for an indie hacker those tend to arrive together.

Where these numbers come from

We searched TikTok's topic data for twenty-odd problem areas across six categories, kept the topics that described something a small team could build, and wrote down what TikTok reported for each.

Two fields do all the work:

  • 7-day searches is TikTok's "Search popularity" figure: how many searches that topic got worldwide in the last week. Weekly, not monthly, so do not compare it to a Google Keyword Planner number. The search volume guide explains the difference.
  • Videos is how many videos TikTok has matched to the topic. Zero is the signal behind TikTok's content-gap badge, and our content gap guide covers what it does and does not mean.

The field every row below comes from: a topic page in the TikTok app, and on desktop at tiktok.com/csi, showing 7-day global search popularity.
A topic is a cluster, not a phrase

TikTok groups related searches into one topic and reports a single number for the group. "sleep tracking and sleep aid apps" covers everything people type that means roughly that, which is why the wording reads like a category rather than a query.

20 startup ideas backed by TikTok search demand

Each row is the same shape: the idea, the search topic it came from, what TikTok reported for that topic, and the wedge. The wedge is the narrow version you could ship alone in a month, not the eventual company.

How to find startup ideas on TikTok

The list above is one afternoon of searching. Here is the method, so you can run it on a category we skipped.

Search problem phrases, not product names

People do not search "productivity SaaS". They search the shape of their problem. TikTok's autocomplete is the cheapest way to read those phrases, because it completes what other people have already typed. We pulled the suggestions for is there an app that on 19 September 2026 and got, among others: is there an app that reads for you, is there an app that makes outfits for you, is there an app that can help find my makeup shades, is there an app that can restore deleted messages, and is there an app that can help me prep for a job interview.

Five product briefs in one call, each one written by a person who wanted the thing and could not find it. Run the same trick with how do i stop, why won't my and how do you fix.

Use "near me" to find the local ones

Service businesses show up in search before they show up anywhere else, because the search is the transaction. Three of the four local-service topics above reported zero matched videos while carrying millions of weekly searches, which is a pattern worth chasing: people are looking for a therapist, a carer or a clearance van on TikTok and finding nothing filed against the phrase.

Search near me on its own and you get noise. Pair it with a trade and it sharpens up fast: the autocomplete for near me on 19 September included near me nail studio and near me hair salon alongside the junk. Put your trade in front of it, then check the topic's video count.

Read the comments as the interview

A search number tells you how many. The comments tell you why, and they are the only free customer interviews that scale.

We took the two most-liked videos about study apps and pulled forty comments from each. The first, 861,781 views and 577 comments, is a creator naming three apps. The second, 513,953 views and 215 comments, is one app demoed on camera.

TikTok comments under a fitness video, ranked by likes, showing questions and replies from viewers
Comments, sorted by likes, are the cheapest customer research on the internet.

In the forty comments under the second video, ten asked what the app was called and nine asked whether it costs money. Commenters named five products we had not searched for: Gizmo, Knowmunity, Focus Town, Nerdliy and Turbo AI. One comment, at 67 likes, was a straight recommendation of a rival.

Two findings fall out of that. Discovery is broken in this category, because people watch a demo of a product and still cannot name it. And price is the first objection, not the fifth. If you were about to launch a study app at a monthly subscription, that is the thing to test this week.

I'm looking for a startup idea in [category]. Search TikTok topics for five problem phrases in that category and list every topic with its 7-day searches and video count. Flag the ones with under 100 videos. Then get TikTok's autocomplete for "is there an app that" and "how do i stop", find the most-liked video about the biggest topic, and pull 40 comments ranked by likes. Tell me which complaint comes up most and what people say about price.

For a fuller version of this workflow, including how to size a category before you commit, see TikTok for startups. If you would rather start from the demand side, the content gaps feed is refreshed weekly and the niches guide ranks whole categories by how unanswered they are.

What search demand does not tell you

Search volume answers one question well: are people looking for this, how many of them, and in what words. It is silent on everything after that.

It says nothing about willingness to pay. Four million people searching for a free sleep tracker is four million people searching for a free sleep tracker. The comment evidence above is the cheap test: read what people say about price under the videos in your category before you build the paywall.

It says nothing about retention either. A moving checklist is used once per move. A symptom log might be opened daily for two years. Same search number, completely different business, and the search data cannot separate them.

And a zero in the Videos column is a content gap, not an empty market. It means TikTok has not matched a video to that phrasing. There may be twelve funded companies in the category already. Check the app stores before you celebrate.

Used properly, this data is a filter rather than an answer. It kills the ideas nobody is looking for in about ten minutes, which leaves you more time for the ones that need a real conversation.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find a good startup idea?

Start from a problem people are already describing out loud, not from a product category. Search the problem phrasing in TikTok's topic data, note how many searches it got in the last seven days and how many videos TikTok has matched to it, then read the comments under the most-liked video in that category. That gives you demand, the customer's own words, and the top objection in about an hour. Then go and talk to five of those people.

What startups are trending in 2026?

On TikTok search in September 2026, the heaviest unanswered demand sits in home logistics (moving checklists at 4.76M weekly searches with no videos matched), health self-tracking (menopause symptoms at 4.80M), local services (sofa disposal, mobile massage, senior care costs, all at millions of searches with zero videos) and one-person money admin (self-employed tax paperwork at 4.26M). The content gaps feed is refreshed weekly if you want the current list rather than this snapshot.

Can TikTok search data validate a startup idea?

It validates one part: whether people are looking for this, how many, and in what words. It says nothing about whether they will pay you or come back next month. Treat a big number as permission to keep going and a near-zero one as a cheap warning. The founder workflow covers how to run the rest of the check.

What does it mean when a topic has zero videos?

It means TikTok has not matched any video to that topic cluster, which is the signal behind its content-gap badge. It does not mean the market is empty. There may be funded companies in the category already, so check the app stores before you celebrate. More on what the badge measures.
