The best app ideas are not the ones nobody has thought of. They are the ones thousands of people typed into a search box last week and did not find an answer to. TikTok is the only large platform that publishes those search counts, which makes it the cheapest demand check a solo founder has.

Every idea below came out of a real TikTok search topic we pulled on 19 September 2026, with its 7-day search count and the number of videos TikTok has matched to it. Where the video count is zero, people are searching and nothing is answering them. The snapshots are linked under the tables so you can check any row.

People describe the app they want before it exists. They type "app that locks phone while studying", or "is there an app for people who live alone", and TikTok records it. We pulled TikTok's autocomplete for two of those stems and got this back:

Typed stemWhat TikTok suggests next
app thatpays for walking steps · can help you study · change your outfit · records lectures and write notes · locks phone while studying · looks like digital camera · helps to apply to universities
is there an appfor people who live alone · to mix songs · to unblur message · for removing background video · that makes applications · the can remove instrument in a music

That is a backlog of mobile app ideas written by users, in their own words, with no survey and no landing page. Google gives you the same intent as a monthly average with a cost-per-click. TikTok gives you a 7-day count and tells you how many videos exist for it.

The counts come from Creator Search Insights, the tool TikTok launched in March 2024 so creators could make videos people are already looking for. Search popularity is searches over the last seven days, global unless a country is picked. A video count of zero is TikTok's own content gap signal: demand with nothing filed against it.

How we built this list

We ran topic searches across 23 seed phrases covering health, money, study, family, travel, hobbies and cars, swept TikTok's content-gap channel at five offsets, and pulled autocomplete for two "app" stems. Then we kept the topics that describe a job an app could do, preferring high searches with few or no videos.

25 app ideas with the search topic that proves them

Read each row as: the product, the exact phrase people search, how many searched it in seven days, and how many videos TikTok has matched to that phrase. A low video count is your opening, as a product and as the first channel you sell it in.

Data for all four tables: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Snapshots: health and study topics, money, family and travel topics, learning and social topics. Search popularity is searches in the last seven days, global; videos is how many TikTok has matched to the topic.

How to find app ideas yourself

The list above is a snapshot. The method is the thing worth keeping, and it is three steps that take about fifteen minutes per idea.

1. Search the problem, not the product

Type the thing that goes wrong, not the category. "Medication reminder" is a product name. "Missed doses" is a problem, and it returned a topic with four million weekly searches and no videos. Do this for six or seven phrasings of the same pain and the winning wording is also the copy for your App Store listing.

2. Read the comments under the top video for the workaround

Search TikTok's videos for the same phrase, open the one with the most comments, and read them. This is where you find what people do instead of buying your app. We searched "app to cancel subscriptions" and opened a video with 643,968 plays and 174 comments. The top comments were not praise:

CommentLikes
"how do i permanently delete the subscription"274
"What if there's no option that says cancel subscription"134
"there is no active subscription but it says there is.. i cant remove my card bc it says theres an active subscription"34
"I click cancel subscription and it doesn't work PLSSSS HELP"18
"It doesnt even show me any subscriptions button"12

Half a million people watched a tutorial and still could not finish the task. Those five sentences are your onboarding, your FAQ and your first three TikToks.

3. Check the gap before you commit

Go back to the topic and look at the video count. Zero or a few hundred means you can own the search term while you build, for one video a week. Tens of thousands means you need a sharper wedge. The search volume guide covers how to read the number, and audience insights shows who is searching.

I want consumer app ideas in the [sleep / money / parenting] space. Search TikTok topics for these five phrases: [phrase 1] … [phrase 5]. Return a table of every topic with its 7-day searches, video count and category, sorted by searches. Flag the ones with under 500 videos. Then pull TikTok's autocomplete for "app that" and "is there an app" and tell me which suggestions match the topics you found. For the best three, find the most-commented TikTok video on that phrase and summarise what people are stuck on.

What a big number does and does not prove

A 7-day search count tells you that people are looking, how many, and in what words. It does not tell you that they will pay. Treat it as a reason to spend a weekend on a prototype, not as a revenue model.

Three habits keep you honest. Check the topic's country split before building for a market you do not live in. Watch the video count as well as the searches, since a topic with zero videos is a window that closes once creators notice. And open the 7-day chart: steady growth is a trend, a vertical line is a news event that will be gone before your first build.

The cheapest next step

Pick one idea, post one video using the topic's exact wording on screen and in the caption, and put a waitlist link in your bio. If a topic with four million weekly searches and no videos cannot get you a hundred signups, you have learned that for free. More on validating with search data.

Once something works, the same data tells you what to build next. Search your category again in a month, read the comments on the videos that now rank, and you have a feature list written by your users.

Frequently asked questions

What apps are in demand right now?

On the TikTok search data we pulled on 19 September 2026, the biggest unanswered consumer demand sat in sleep ("sleep tracking and sleep aid apps", 4.3M searches in seven days, no videos matched), hydration and health signals (7.2M), baby sleep and feeding logs (4.7M), pet and child location apps (4.8M and 4.0M), and making friends after graduation (4.7M). Those numbers are weekly, not monthly. Open the snapshot to check any of them.

How do I come up with an app idea?

Stop starting from products and start from problems people type out loud. Search TikTok for six or seven phrasings of a pain you know something about, keep the topics with high searches and few videos, then read the comments under the most-commented video on that phrase to find the workaround people use today. That workaround is your first feature. The method is in the section above.

What app ideas make money?

Search volume shows demand, not willingness to pay, so pair it with a paid signal. The ideas most likely to earn are the ones where people already spend money on a worse fix: subscription audits (people pay for the forgotten subscriptions), pill reminders, single-destination trip planners, and tools for parents. A topic that people search alongside a brand name, like "Flo app late period tracking", is especially strong, because it means the paid market exists and is missing a feature.

Is TikTok search data reliable for app research?

The numbers are TikTok's own, from Creator Search Insights, not modelled from a panel. Search popularity is searches over the last seven days, global unless you pick a country. The limits are real: it covers TikTok's users, not everyone, and a topic is a cluster of related searches rather than one exact phrase. Check the country split and the 7-day chart before you build.
