Pick a TikTok business account if you sell something and need a website link, a contact button and ads. Stay on a personal account if you want trending music, Creator Rewards money or TikTok Shop affiliate commissions. That is the whole decision in two sentences.

The detail matters, because the switch changes more than a label. A business account loses the general music library the day you switch. A personal account cannot run ads or answer messages automatically. And the "creator account" people still search for no longer exists as a separate option. Every rule below is checked against TikTok's own pages and at least one 2025 or 2026 guide.

The account types TikTok has now

TikTok has two account types you can switch between: personal and business. A third type, the organization account, is for verified organizations that need several people managing one profile, and you do not get it from a toggle.

There is no separate creator account any more. TikTok used to offer personal, creator and business as three choices. It folded creator into personal, so a personal account now carries the creator tools: analytics, the Creator Rewards Program, LIVE gifts and TikTok Studio. Guides from August 2026 list only personal, business and organization. When this page says "creator account", it means a personal account used by a creator.

People have not caught up. A March 2025 thread on r/digital_marketing is titled "How do you switch a TikTok business account to a creator account?" The answer is that you switch to personal, and the creator tools are already there. TikTok's help page on switching offers only those two directions.

Two rows need a note. TikTok has not published a side-by-side list of analytics by account type; both show views, watch time, viewers and followers, and the guides above say business adds Business Suite and report downloads. The analytics guide explains each number. On Duet and Stitch, the privacy setting that decides who can use your videos is the same on both types; the difference is which videos you can duet, and that comes back to music.

Music: the difference that decides most switches

A personal account can put almost any song on a video. A business account sees only the Commercial Music Library when it taps Add Sound. TikTok's own page describes it as a pre-cleared library of 1 million songs from independent artists and music houses, licensed for organic posts and ads. Chart hits and the sounds behind most trends are not in it.

The reason is licensing. The deals behind TikTok's general library cover personal use. A business promoting itself counts as commercial use, so TikTok limits business accounts to tracks cleared for that. The same page says the library applies to "organic content, including a duet, react, or stitch with user videos". A June 2026 guide reports what that looks like: a business account joining a trend built on a chart song finds the Duet or Stitch button blocked, the sound greyed out, or the audio muted on the finished video.

You can still find cleared music. The trending songs list shows which sounds are moving right now, and the cleared tracks among them are the ones a business account can use. The music promotion guide covers the artist side of the same library.

The music trap

Switch to a business account and every trending sound disappears from your Add Sound screen the same day. Videos you already posted keep playing, according to every 2026 guide we checked, but TikTok has not published what happens to old videos with general-library music, and you cannot reuse those sounds on new posts. The only fix is switching back to personal, which restores the full library at once. That is why "business account to personal account" is one of the ten things TikTok suggests when you type "business account" into its search bar.

This is the part a business account does well. Three things change on the profile, and one in the inbox.

Website link. A personal account needs 1,000 followers before the website field appears. A business account gets it at any follower count. Stan's September 2026 guide and Hootsuite's May 2026 guide both confirm this; TikTok's own pages call the link a business feature without spelling out the threshold. A few 2024 articles claimed TikTok dropped the 1,000 rule for personal accounts. The 2026 guides say it is still there.

Email and phone. A business account can show an email address and a phone number as tappable buttons, plus a business category under the name. A personal account has no email button; an address in the bio is plain text.

Action buttons. Business profiles can add a button such as Shop Now, Learn More or Contact Us that opens a link. Personal profiles cannot.

Automatic messages. Business accounts get a Message Center inside Business Suite with four tools: a welcome message of up to 250 characters, keyword replies (keyword up to 40 characters, reply up to 500), suggested questions and chat prompts. TikTok's help page says each message goes through a review of one to five business days, and that general accounts do not get these tools. If people ask the same three questions in your DMs, this alone can justify the switch. The social media managers page covers reporting for people who run several of these accounts.

Money: rewards, shop, ads and Promote

The money question splits cleanly. Earn from TikTok, stay personal. Spend on TikTok, go business.

Creator Rewards Program. TikTok's program terms, updated July 2026, say the account must not be "a non-personal account, such as a Business Account or Organization Account". A business account cannot join. If you are already in the program and switch to business, you leave it. The other requirements are 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days and age 18 or over; the Creator Rewards guide has the payout details, and the money guide puts it next to the other options.

TikTok Shop. There are two roles. An affiliate creator earns commission by tagging products, and TikTok's creator eligibility policy asks for an individual account, 1,000 followers, age 18 and a US base, with a 30-day pilot under 5,000 followers. A seller lists products through Seller Center with a business entity, tax ID and bank account. Sellers usually run a business account. Affiliates stay personal.

Promote and ads. Promote, the button that boosts one video for a fee, works on both account types. Ads Manager, with campaigns, targeting and pixels, needs a business account. LIVE gifts are a personal-account feature in the guides we checked; TikTok has not published a rule for business accounts hosting LIVE.

How to switch to a business account on TikTok

  1. Open your profile and tap the menu (three lines) in the top corner.
  2. Tap Settings and privacy, then Account.
  3. Tap Switch to Business Account.
  4. Pick a business category (TikTok uses it for the label on your profile) and add an email if you want the button.
  5. Confirm. The change is immediate and free.

To go back, follow the same path and tap Switch to Personal Account. Followers, videos, username and profile stay in place either way. Two things do not carry over cleanly. TikTok's business verification page warns against switching back and forth because business verification is not saved and has to be redone. And analytics can look wrong afterwards: Hootsuite reports users losing access to earlier analytics data, and Printify says history "may reset or display differently". Screenshot your analytics first if you will need them.

Some people find the switch back is not offered. An April 2026 thread on r/AskMarketing, "i cant switch from business account to personal account on tiktok", describes exactly that: the option missing from the Account screen. TikTok has not published why. Update the app and try again, then try from a computer at tiktok.com. If the option is still missing, Report a problem under Settings and privacy is the only route TikTok offers.

Three of the twenty are about undoing the switch ("to personal account", "how to remove", "how to change"). Two of the "tiktok for business" suggestions mention ads and two mention affiliate, which is the Shop side. The app's own users ask two things: how do I get in, and how do I get out.

Before you decide, look at who ranks for your kind of business. If the top videos in TikTok search for "wedding photographer" or "meal prep delivery" come from personal accounts using chart music, a business account competes with one hand tied. If they come from business accounts using voiceover, you lose nothing.

An agent connected to TikTok's search can pull the top results, check each profile for a business category and email button, and list the sounds. It tells you, before you switch, whether your niche runs on music you would be giving up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a TikTok business account and a creator account?

A creator account is now just a personal account with the creator tools switched on. It keeps the full music library, Creator Rewards, LIVE gifts and Shop affiliate. A business account trades those for a website link at any follower count, email and phone buttons, Ads Manager, Business Suite and automatic message replies. The music library is the biggest practical difference: business accounts only see the Commercial Music Library.

Is a TikTok business account free?

Yes. Switching costs nothing and there is no subscription. Ads are the only thing you pay for, and only if you run them. Promote, the boost button, costs the same on either account type.

Do business accounts get less views on TikTok?

TikTok has not published any rule that shows business accounts to fewer people. What business accounts do lose is the trending sounds, and videos on trending sounds often ride a wave of interest. Creators who switch and report a drop usually stopped using those sounds at the same time. If your videos rely on original audio or voiceover, the guides we checked report no difference.

How do I switch to a business account on TikTok?

Open your profile, tap the menu in the top corner, then Settings and privacy, then Account, then Switch to Business Account. Pick a business category, add an email if you want the button, and confirm. It takes effect at once. The same path with Switch to Personal Account takes you back.

Can a business account use trending sounds on TikTok?

Only the ones in the Commercial Music Library. When a business account taps Add Sound it sees Commercial Sounds, not the general library, and TikTok blocks Duets and Stitches of videos that use uncleared music. Original sounds you record yourself work fine. The trending songs list shows which sounds are moving so you can check for cleared ones.

Can a business account join the Creator Rewards Program?

No. TikTok's program terms, updated July 2026, exclude business and organization accounts. You need a personal account, 10,000 followers, 100,000 video views in the last 30 days and to be 18 or over. If you switch a personal account that is already in the program to business, you leave the program.
