Only one TikTok SEO tool shows you how many times people actually searched a phrase on TikTok, and it is TikTok's own Creator Search Insights. Everything else in this comparison is doing one of three other jobs: reading TikTok's autocomplete, reporting what advertisers are bidding on, or writing captions with AI. All three can be useful. None of them is search volume.
Tool pages rarely say where their numbers come from, so you end up comparing a real search count against an estimate against a count of ad creatives as if they were the same measurement. Below is what each tool has, checked against its own documentation, with prices and the platform you use it on.
The three kinds of TikTok keyword tool
Sort every tool on the market into one of these and the choice gets easy.
- Search-demand tools. They tell you how many people searched something. On TikTok that is Creator Search Insights, plus the Ads Manager Keyword Planner for advertisers. Nothing else has TikTok's search counts, because TikTok does not publish them anywhere else.
- Autocomplete harvesters. They type your seed into TikTok's search box, collect the suggestions, and hand you the list. Real signal about phrasing, free to produce, and carrying no volume, so any number attached to it is a model rather than a count.
- Writers and finders. AI caption and hashtag generators, and browser extensions that search videos. They help with the output, not the research.

TikTok's three first-party tools do different jobs
Creator Search Insights: the only public search volume
Search a topic inside Creator Search Insights and TikTok gives you a search-popularity figure for the last seven days, a daily chart, a 0 to 100 popularity score, the number of videos TikTok has matched to the topic, the category, and a country and age split of who searched. When the video count is low against the search count, TikTok badges the topic as a content gap.
Here is the difference in practice. We put the seed sourdough through TikTok's autocomplete and through Creator Search Insights on the same day.
| Autocomplete gives you | Creator Search Insights gives you | 7-day searches | Videos |
|---|---|---|---|
| sourdough starter | sourdough dough ball preparation | 4,323,132 | 326 |
| sourdough for beginners | bread dough and sourdough recipes | 4,281,283 | 696 |
| sourdough fail | sourdough baking tips and techniques | 4,053,794 | 385 |
| sourdough pizza | Flat sourdough | 219,290 | 0 |
Data: TikTok autocomplete and Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 19 September 2026. Topics snapshot, autocomplete snapshot.
The left column tells you how people phrase things. The right column tells you how many of them there are, and that "Flat sourdough" has demand and no videos matched to it. The catch is everything around the data: it lives in the app and at tiktok.com/csi, with no export, no history beyond the chart, and no way to compare fifty topics at once.
Creative Center Keyword Insights: what advertisers write, not what users search
TikTok describes Creative Center as a free, public home for creative resources, and says a login is not required. Its Keyword Insights panel ranks keywords by how they are used in TikTok ads and pairs them with ad performance metrics such as click-through and conversion rate. Those are numbers about creatives, not a count of searches.
That makes it good for a question it rarely gets asked: which wording is working in paid TikTok copy in my industry and market right now. When we checked the signed-out keyword insights URL on 19 September 2026 it resolved to the Creative Suite landing page, and the deeper trend lists sat behind a login prompt, so budget for an account. The Creative Center comparison has the side-by-side.
Ads Manager Keyword Planner: real search data behind a login
The Keyword Planner in TikTok Ads Manager was built for Search Ads. TikTok describes it as a planning tool that shows search volume, competition and a performance prediction so you can size a keyword list before you spend. The related keyword suggestion tool adds monthly impression predictions, which TikTok labels as reference figures based on historical data.
Two limits matter. You need an Ads Manager account whose home country is one of the twelve TikTok supports for the planner, and the numbers are shaped for advertisers: impressions and competition rather than a plain search count you can put in a content brief.
The autocomplete tools: honest about phrasing, quiet about volume
keywordtool.io's TikTok tool explains its method openly. It appends letters and numbers to your seed, collects every autocomplete suggestion TikTok returns, and reports up to 750 queries per seed. The free version gives you the list with no metrics. Paid plans start at $88 a month and add a search-volume column.
Read their API documentation and you find the important sentence: Google and Bing volumes come straight from those platforms' keyword planners, while TikTok, YouTube, Amazon and the rest get estimated search volume. So a TikTok number in keywordtool.io is a model's guess, and TikTok's own 7-day figure for the same phrase will not match it. That is not a flaw in the tool, it is the only thing anyone outside TikTok can do with autocomplete alone.
keyword.io's long-tail finder does the same harvesting, free and without a signup, and shows no volume at all. For a quick sweep of how people phrase a topic, it is the fastest option on this page. Our guide to TikTok search suggestions shows what these lists look like and how to read them.
Generators and extensions
Hootsuite's free TikTok SEO tool is a caption writer. You pick a tone and language, describe your video, paste in the keywords you already have, and it returns one optimised caption. Buffer and ContentStudio ship near-identical generators. They are fine for a first draft of a caption. They cannot tell you which keyword to put in it, because you are the one supplying the keywords.
The TikTok Keyword Searcher extension gets filed under keyword tools, but it is a finder. It searches your own posts, likes, favourites, collections and reposts by keyword, matching video descriptions, creators and sounds, with a date filter. Free and open source, and the right tool for finding the recipe you saved in 2023.
Caption generators are cheap to build and cost nothing to run, so they dominate the SERP for tool queries. Search-demand data is expensive and TikTok controls it. When a page offers a free TikTok SEO tool with no signup, expect a text generator.
Scrapers and data pipelines
Apify's TikTok actors pull videos, profiles, hashtags and comments, billed per event from roughly $1.70 per 1,000 results. They are a solid way to collect content and engagement at scale for competitor work or comment analysis. They have no route to search volume, because that number is not on any public page to scrape. The same is true of every TikTok scraper library.
TokConnect sits in the first family instead. It exposes Creator Search Insights topics, 7-day charts, popularity scores, content-gap flags and audience splits, plus ordinary TikTok search and autocomplete, as tools any AI agent can call. That means a laptop instead of a phone, fifty topics instead of one, and a saved file at the end. The keyword research walkthrough runs the full method on one niche.
For the niche "home coffee setup", get TikTok autocomplete suggestions for five seed phrases, then look up the matching Creator Search Insights topics. Build one table with the phrase, the 7-day search volume, the video count and whether it is a content gap. Sort by searches per video, highest first.
Which TikTok SEO tool to use
If you are a creator, use Creator Search Insights and nothing else. It is free, the numbers are TikTok's own, and one weekly pass through your niche gives you more than any generator will. Add keyword.io when you want to see how people phrase a topic. Skip the paid tools until the app stops being enough.
If you run an agency or a brand account, you need numbers a client can check and a record of what you found. Creator Search Insights has the numbers but no export, so pair it with something that writes the data down. Creative Center earns its place in the paid half of the brief, where ad copy is the question, and the Keyword Planner is worth opening if the account already advertises in a supported market.
If you are a developer, the split is clean: Apify and the scraper vendors for content and comments, an agent-callable route for search demand, official APIs for anything you post. Our search volume guide explains what the numbers mean before you build on them.
One habit beats every tool here: write the number and the date next to it. TikTok's search volumes move week to week, and a figure with no date on it is a decoration.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do SEO on TikTok?
Yes. TikTok has a search bar, ranked results and a keyword index built from your caption, on-screen text, spoken words and hashtags. Picking a phrase people search and putting it in those places is the whole job. The TikTok SEO guide has the checklist.
How to find TikTok keywords?
Start in Creator Search Insights, in the TikTok app or at tiktok.com/csi: search your niche and read the 7-day search volume for each topic. Then widen the phrasing with TikTok's autocomplete, either by typing in the app or through a free tool like keyword.io. Our keyword research walkthrough runs both steps on one niche.
Is there a free TikTok keyword tool that shows search volume?
Creator Search Insights, TikTok's own tool, is free and shows a 7-day search count for every topic. It is the only free source of TikTok's real numbers. Free third-party tools show autocomplete suggestions without volume, and paid ones show estimates.
Do keywords work on TikTok?
They decide whether your video can be found in search, which is a growing share of TikTok use: TikTok's own figure, given when it launched Search Ads, is that 57% of users use the app's search function. Keywords do not force a video into anyone's For You feed, so treat them as the discovery layer rather than a growth hack.
