Nobody can promise you a viral video, and this page will not. What you can do is copy what the most-liked videos for ordinary searches already do. On 22 September 2026 we pulled the most-liked results for eight everyday searches (dinner ideas, cleaning motivation, gym, budget tips, study with me, skincare, meal prep, morning routine) and measured all 58. Knowing how to go viral on TikTok starts with knowing what those videos share.
The short version: the middle video ran 42 seconds, had about 2 million views, named the search in its caption, carried 5 hashtags and was saved 16 times per 100 likes. The middle one was already five months old. Below are the numbers, six plain steps, and what TikTok has said about how a video spreads.
What "viral" means at your account size
TikTok has never published a view count that makes a video viral, so measure it against your own normal. In a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, the middle post from an account under 10,000 followers got 215 views. From an account over 1 million it got about 102,000.
| Followers | Creators | Views on the middle post | Best post vs worst post, middle creator |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10k | 5 | 215 | 2.8x |
| 10k to 100k | 7 | 12,130 | 58.3x |
| 100k to 1M | 17 | 21,800 | 40.7x |
| Over 1M | 29 | 102,450 | 56.5x |
| All 58 | 58 | 22,075 | 45.5x |
Data: a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, last 10 posts each, pulled 21 September 2026. Views are the median post of the median creator in each tier. "Best vs worst" is the creator's highest-viewed post divided by their lowest. Open the sample; the swing figures are in this file.
The right column is the useful one. For the middle creator, the best of their last 10 posts got 8 times the views of their typical post, and 50 of 58 had a best post at least 10 times bigger than their worst. So: a video is viral for you when it gets about 10 times your usual views. The 58 most-liked videos below had a middle view count of 1.95 million, about 88 times an ordinary post in the sample. That is the top of the scale, not the target.
What 58 most-liked videos have in common
We asked TikTok search for 10 results per search, sorted by most liked. It returned 5 to 9 per search, 58 in all, each with its length, views, likes, comments, shares, saves and post date.
| Measure | Middle video | Range (middle half) | Compared with an ordinary post |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 42 s | 24 s to 74 s | 36 of 58 under a minute; 1 over three minutes |
| Views | 1,953,550 | 624,173 to 3,692,740 | 41 of 58 over 1M; 7 over 10M; lowest 15,141 |
| Likes | 114,956 | n/a | Highest 6,091,439 |
| Saves per 100 likes | 16.0 | n/a | 9.5 in the creator sample; 38 of 58 videos above 10 |
| Shares per 100 likes | 5.1 | n/a | 3.4 pooled in the creator sample |
| Comments per 100 likes | 0.6 | n/a | Every video had more saves and more shares than comments |
| Search words in caption | 43 of 58 | n/a | 20 of 58 have the exact phrase |
| Caption length | 177 characters | n/a | 20 under 100 characters; 10 over 400 |
| Hashtags | 5 | n/a | 27 of 58 have exactly five; 5 have none; 10 have ten or more |
| Age at pull | 147 days | 70 to 537 days | 18 under 90 days; 8 over two years |
Data: TikTok video search via TokConnect, 22 September 2026, count 10, sorted by most liked, eight searches. "Middle half" is the 25th to 75th percentile. Saves per 100 likes is saves divided by likes, times 100, taken per video. Creator names removed. Open the snapshot.
Four things stand out. These videos are not short: only 5 of 58 are under 15 seconds and 21 run one to three minutes. Saves run far ahead of an ordinary post: 16 per 100 likes against 9.5 in the creator sample, and 20 of the 58 are above 30. About 7 in 10 name the search in the caption. And hashtags sit at five, the same number the 108 captions ranking in search settled on, with no link to views at all.
On age: sorting by most liked favours videos that have had time to collect likes. Two in three were posted in 2026, but 8 are over two years old, and the top video by likes, a 15-second study clip with 6.1 million likes, went up 673 days before the pull. A most-liked list tells you what lasts, not how fast it took off.
Length: the middle video is 42 seconds
| Length | Videos | Share | Views, middle video | Saves per 100 likes, middle video |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under 15 s | 5 | 8.6% | 1,141,789 | 8.6 |
| 15 to 30 s | 15 | 25.9% | 1,794,101 | 13.4 |
| 30 to 60 s | 16 | 27.6% | 2,373,751 | 15.4 |
| 1 to 3 min | 21 | 36.2% | 2,112,998 | 26.7 |
| Over 3 min | 1 | 1.7% | 1,043,011 | 45.9 |
Same 58 videos. Lower bound inclusive. Snapshot, under derived.length.
Length has no measurable link to views here (rank correlation 0.08). It has a weak link to saves: longer videos get saved more, because a two-minute dinner video holds a whole recipe and a 12-second gym clip does not. Pick the length the idea needs, not the length someone said wins.
The searches differ a lot. Dinner ideas and meal prep videos were saved 52 to 55 times per 100 likes; gym clips 4. Cleaning motivation had the most views (two videos over 20 million) but only 8 saves per 100 likes: you watch, feel better and move on.
Hooks and captions on videos that take off
The opening line matters more than anything else you control, and the most common opener on videos ranking in TikTok search is not a trick. It is the search phrase itself. In our hooks study of 89 ranking captions, 34 opened with the plain topic, the middle opener was 8 words, and 55 were under 10 words. Question, if-then and warning openers, the ones every hook list recommends, appeared on 2 of 89.
Captions follow suit. Of the 108 captions ranking for ten everyday searches, 82 contained every word of the search, 58 carried exactly five hashtags, and the middle caption was 145 characters. Captions built as a hook line plus detail (the recipe, the steps, the list) were saved 24,000 times at the median, against 13,000 for a bare phrase.
So: say the search phrase in the first second, put it on screen, and put it in the caption with the detail that makes the video worth keeping.
How to go viral on TikTok: six plain steps
- Pick a topic people already search for. A video nobody is looking for has to win on the For You feed alone. A video that answers a real search gets a second door. TikTok's Creator Search Insights marks topics with many searches and few videos as content gaps; the content gap guide shows how to find one in your niche.
- Open with the search words. Not "wait for it". Name the thing: "cheap dinner ideas for one", "how I clean my bathroom in 20 minutes". That is what ranking videos do.
- Make it worth saving. The most-liked videos are saved 16 times per 100 likes; the dinner and meal prep ones over 50. Give the viewer a reason to come back: quantities in the caption, steps on screen, a list they cannot memorise. The saves guide covers what gets saved.
- Post more than once on the same idea. In the creator sample, the best of a creator's last 10 posts got 8 times the views of their typical one, and nobody can tell in advance which post that will be. Make the video, then make it again with a different opener, length or example. Three versions of a good idea beat one version of three ideas.
- Read the first hour. Open TikTok Studio, find the video, and look at how far people watched and whether they saved or shared it. A video most viewers leave in three seconds has a hook problem; one they finish but never save has a usefulness problem. Analytics explained says what each number means.
- Know how the feed actually works. Most of what you read about "the algorithm" is guesswork. The next section covers what TikTok has put in writing; the algorithm guide goes through it in detail.
By the time a sound or format is all over your For You feed, it has been running for days and thousands of videos already use it. Your copy joins the back of the queue. The most-liked videos for everyday searches are not trend videos at all: they are dinners, cleaning sessions, budgets and study sessions that answer a question people type every week. Be early to a trend or skip it. For views that last, answer a search.
What TikTok has published about how videos spread
TikTok's own explanation, How TikTok recommends videos #ForYou (June 2020), lists three groups of signals: what a viewer does (likes, shares, follows, comments, the videos they make), what the video contains (captions, sounds, hashtags), and device and account settings, which count for less. A strong sign of interest, such as watching a longer video to the end, counts for more than a weak one, such as viewer and creator being in the same country.
The same post states that follower count and whether an account has had past hits are not direct factors in what gets recommended. Sprout Social (updated February 2026) reads this as meaning a new account's video can be recommended just as an established one's can.
TikTok has not published that a new video is shown to a small test group first and then to more people if it does well. That description comes from creators and from guides such as Hootsuite's (updated June 2026). Treat it as a report, not a rule. TikTok has also not published a ranking of signals, so anyone telling you a save is "worth" a fixed number of likes is guessing.
What creators report
Reddit threads are not data, but they show the range of what people mean by viral. In r/GrowthHacking (February 2026) a creator wrote up "A 1-Month TikTok Growth Experiment From 0 to 4.4M Views", a fresh account reaching millions in a month. In r/SaaS (August 2025) a founder posted "We went viral by accident, our TikTok blew up (360k views)": no plan, one video. In r/InstagramMarketing (October 2025) someone asked "How do short videos actually go viral? Is it just luck or is there a..."
The one to keep is from r/startups (January 2026): "I have 1,000 MAU from one viral TikTok (80k views), but only $40". Eighty thousand views brought a thousand monthly users and forty dollars. Viral is a spike in views. It is not followers, sales or a business. For those, the search-driven videos above are the ones that keep working after the spike ends.
See what the most-liked videos in your topic share
Everything above came from eight searches. Your topic has its own numbers: a different typical length, save rate and caption wording. An AI agent connected to TikTok search data can pull the most-liked videos for your topic and describe what they share in about a minute.
Show me the 20 most-liked videos for [my topic] on TikTok with their length, views, likes, saves and captions. Then tell me what they have in common: typical length, saves per 100 likes, whether the caption names the topic, how many hashtags they use, and how old they are. Finish with three video ideas for [my topic] that match what the top 20 share, each with a first line I can say on camera.

Frequently asked questions
How do you go viral on TikTok?
There is no method that guarantees it. What the most-liked videos for everyday searches share is this: they answer something people type into TikTok search, they say the search words in the first second and in the caption, they are worth saving (recipes, routines, lists, fixes), and they run as long as the idea needs, 42 seconds at the middle. Post more than one version of a good idea, because in a sample of 58 creators the best of their last 10 posts got 8 times the views of a typical one and nobody can pick it in advance.
How many views is viral on TikTok?
TikTok has not published a number. Measure against your own account: in a September 2026 sample of 58 creators, the middle post got 215 views for accounts under 10,000 followers, about 12,000 for 10,000 to 100,000, about 22,000 for 100,000 to 1 million and about 102,000 above that. A video at 10 times your usual views is viral for you. The 58 most-liked videos for everyday searches had a middle view count of 1.95 million, which is the top of the scale, not a target.
Can a new account go viral?
Yes. TikTok has stated that follower count and whether an account has had past hits are not direct factors in what gets recommended. The two smallest tiers in our sample had the widest gap between typical views and best post, and a Reddit write-up in r/GrowthHacking (February 2026) describes a fresh account going from 0 to 4.4 million views in a month. A new account has less data on what its viewers like, so the first videos are more of a lottery; answering a real search gives them a second way to be found.
Do hashtags help you go viral?
Not in any way we can measure. The 58 most-liked videos used a median of 5 hashtags, 27 of them exactly five, and the count had no link to views (rank correlation of zero). The 108 captions ranking for ten everyday searches also settled on five. TikTok lists hashtags among the video information it reads, alongside captions and sounds, so use three to five that describe the video. Twenty hashtags and #fyp do nothing the data can see.
Why do my videos never go viral?
Usually one of three things, and TikTok Studio tells you which. If most viewers leave in the first three seconds, the opening is not telling them what the video is; name the topic in the first line. If people watch to the end but do not save or share, the video is pleasant but not useful; give them something to keep. If the video is about something nobody searches for and is not funny or surprising, it has only the For You feed to live on. Also check the sample size: most creators get one post in ten that runs far ahead of the rest, so five posts is not a test.
Is going viral good for a business?
It is good for reach and rarely good for much else on its own. In r/startups (January 2026) a founder reported 1,000 monthly users and $40 from an 80,000-view TikTok, and in r/SaaS (August 2025) another described a 360,000-view video that happened by accident. Views from a spike come from people who were entertained, not people who need what you sell. Videos that answer a search bring fewer viewers at a time, but they arrive with the problem you solve and keep arriving for months.
