Most TikTok videos that get few views have one of six problems, and you can find which one in about twenty minutes. This page is a checklist for how to get more views on TikTok. Work through it in order and stop at the first step that fits.
Each step says what to check, what TikTok has published, and what the numbers show. Nothing here promises a viral video, because nobody can.
Step 1. Is it a review hold or a rule problem?
What to check. Open the video from your own profile. If TikTok has held or restricted it, a label sits on the post or under its three-dot menu: Video under review, Not eligible for recommendation or Not eligible for the For You feed. Then check the account under Settings and privacy, Account, Account status (or search "account status" inside Settings if the path has moved).
What TikTok has published. TikTok does not use the word "shadowban". It publishes For You feed Eligibility Standards (current version 13 September 2025): kinds of video that stay on your profile but are not recommended into anyone's For You feed. In February 2023 it announced the Account status page and a notice telling creators which videos are ineligible for recommendation, why, and how to appeal (TechCrunch, 2 February 2023); the help page is Why is my account not being recommended. So the thing people call a shadowban is real, but it has a label, a reason and an appeal button. A fresh upload can also show zero views for minutes or hours while TikTok checks it; TikTok has not published how long that takes.
What creators report. Two r/TikTokLounge threads, "The infamous TIKTOK SHADOWBAN and how I fixed it!" (July 2026) and "Tiktok business support admitting that shadowbans do exist!" (June 2026), describe support staff using the word informally and views returning once flagged posts were removed or appealed. "my new TikTok posts suddenly started getting 0 views after a good run" (r/socialmedia, May 2026) and "Don't delete your zero view videos right now!!!" (r/TikTokMonetizing, January 2026) describe zero-view spells that ended on their own. One was confirmed: during a US data-centre outage on 25 to 27 January 2026, TikTok said creators "may temporarily see '0' views" and called it a display error (Engadget, 27 January 2026). For "Anyone else's TikTok views suddenly drop around August 15?" (r/TikTok, August 2026) we found no statement.
Found a label? Fix the cause or appeal, then judge nothing else until the next post. No label, and views low but not zero? It is not a rule problem. Keep going.
Step 2. Is it the first hour?
What TikTok has published. A new video is shown to a small group first. TikTok's own seller education page describes a "basic traffic pool" of around 500 people, judged on watch time, likes, comments and how many finished the video, before a "larger traffic pool". Its 2020 newsroom post How TikTok recommends videos says finishing a video counts for more than weaker signals, and that follower count is not a direct factor.
What to check. Profile, menu, TikTok Studio, Analytics, Content, then tap the video. Read Watched full video (the share of views that reached the end) and Average watch time next to the video's length. The TikTok analytics guide explains every number on that screen.
What the data says. Low views with a high finish rate means the test group liked it and the topic is small: go to step 3. Low views with a low finish rate means the video lost them: go to step 5. In a September 2026 sample of 58 creators, the middle account under 10,000 followers got about 215 plays a post. Two hundred views on a small account is normal, not a punishment.
Step 3. Is it the topic?
A topic kills views in two ways. Nobody is looking for it, or everybody is already making it. TikTok shows you both numbers free in Creator Search Insights: searches over the last seven days, and how many videos it has matched to the topic. We pulled eight searches on 22 September 2026, four everyday vlog formats and four household how-to questions.
| Topic (TikTok's wording) | Searches, 7 days | Videos matched | Searches per video |
|---|---|---|---|
| a day in life my life | 6,802 | 10,128 | 0.7 |
| morning routine | 58,305 | 17,634 | 3.3 |
| getting ready with me | 273,272 | 1,957 | 139.6 |
| why i eat in my day | 209,920 | 1,009 | 208.0 |
| how to fold sheets in sets | 74,462 | 318 | 234.2 |
| how to clean dishwasher filter | 172,248 | 582 | 296.0 |
| how to fix squeaky door | 231,184 | 180 | 1,284.4 |
| squeaky door hinge | 277,372 | 152 | 1,824.8 |
| descale kettle | 71,307 | 0 | no videos matched |
| fold a fitted sheet for dummies | 46,576 | 0 | no videos matched |
Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 22 September 2026. Searches are TikTok's 7-day global "Search popularity" figure; videos are the count TikTok lists for the topic. Open the snapshot.
Read the last column. "Morning routine" had about three searches for every video competing for them. "Squeaky door hinge" had almost five times the searches and 152 videos, about 1,800 searches per video. "Descale kettle" and "fold a fitted sheet for dummies" had tens of thousands of searches and no matched video at all.
TikTok's own content-gap list is the same idea at scale: on 19 September 2026, 78 of its 80 topics had zero matched videos, including "best trading app" (305,891 searches) and "Best Bronzer" (276,227). The content gap guide explains how to read a zero, and the keyword research guide shows how to find topics like the door hinge in your niche. We left out of the table any topic whose seven-day line climbs in a straight line from near zero to millions, because those look like clusters TikTok created this week rather than settled demand.
Check TikTok search demand for my last 10 video topics and tell me which ones people actually search for. For each topic give the 7-day searches, the number of matched videos and searches per video, then tell me which two topics I should make next and why.

Step 4. Is it the wording?
What to check. Do your caption and on-screen text contain the words a person would type? "Sunday reset" does not match "how to clean dishwasher filter".
What TikTok has published. Captions, sounds and hashtags feed its recommendations, and search matches what you write, what you put on screen and what you say; the TikTok SEO guide covers the published signals. Since August 2025 the app has shown a notice that a post can carry at most five hashtags (Social Media Today, 17 August 2025).
What the data says. Of 108 captions ranking for ten everyday searches, only 12 contained the exact search phrase, but 82 contained every word of it somewhere. The middle caption was 145 characters, and 58 carried exactly five hashtags. Cover the words people type, keep it short, stop at five tags. The caption ideas guide has the formulas.
Data: TikTok video search, 10 queries, 21 September 2026. Open the snapshot.
Step 5. Is it the hook or the length?
What to check. The retention graph on the video's analytics page. A cliff in the first three seconds means the hook lost them. A steady slide means too long or too slow.
Hooks. Across 89 captions ranking in TikTok search, 34 opened with the plain search phrase, the topic named in the first line. Question, if-then, contrarian and warning hooks together appeared on 2 of the 89, and the middle opener was 8 words. Saying what the video is about beats being clever. The TikTok hooks guide lists 40 patterns.
Length. There is no right length, only a length people finish, and Watched full video falls as videos get longer. Videos ranking for "how to see tiktok analytics" ran 104 seconds at the median and 1.59% of viewers saved them; for the vaguer "tiktok analytics", 24 seconds and 0.15%. Our video length guide covers this by format.
Data: TikTok video search, 8 hook queries (20 September 2026) and 3 analytics queries (22 September 2026). Hooks snapshot, length snapshot.
Step 6. Is it the account?
What TikTok has published. The For You feed Eligibility Standards make "unoriginal or reused" content with nothing new added ineligible for the For You feed, and name clips carrying someone else's watermark or logo as the example. TikTok's originality guidance says subtitles over someone else's audio are not enough; you need your own edit, your own take or yourself on camera (ContentIQ's summary). An account built on reposts, watermarked memes or other people's clips has its answer, and the only fix is original videos.
Wrong-country audiences. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program terms say rewards depend partly on the country a view comes from and forbid joining through a VPN, so a video watched mostly outside the program's countries earns nothing however big the count. Creators report the wider problem in "[CRP] 0 Qualified Views: Algorithm pushes my videos to 'Search' or non-eligible countries" (r/TikTokMonetizing, September 2026) and "Today I learned my TikTok audience is stuck in the wrong country" (r/indiehackers, August 2025). A VPN, a phone bought abroad or a scheduling server in another region is the common thread. TikTok has not published how it decides a video's home country.
What to check. Analytics, then Viewers, for your top countries. If most viewers are somewhere you did not expect, post from your own phone on your own network for a month and watch whether the split moves. Do not route around it with another VPN; that is the one thing the terms name.
What actually gets more views on TikTok
Put the six steps together and one pattern shows up in our data. Videos found through search keep collecting views for months, because people keep typing the question. Videos ranking for six household how-to searches were saved 38 times per 100 likes, against about 9 for an ordinary post in our 58-creator sample.
So: pick topics people search for and few people answer, say the phrase out loud and on screen in the first line, keep the caption short with five hashtags, make the video only as long as the answer, and post original footage from your own phone. Then read Watched full video, not the view count, for two weeks. None of this guarantees anything. It removes the reasons a decent video gets no chance.
Data: a September 2026 sample of 58 creators surfaced by TikTok search in six niches, 572 posts, and TikTok search results for six how-to queries, 22 September 2026. Saves snapshot, creator sample.
Reposting the same file hands TikTok a duplicate, which its published standards make ineligible for the For You feed. It also throws away the search views the first copy would collect over the coming months. Leave it up, check its label, and put the lesson into the next video.
Frequently asked questions
Why am I getting 0 views on TikTok?
Check three things in order. First, open the video from your profile and look for a status label such as Video under review or Not eligible for recommendation; a fresh upload can show zero views for minutes or hours while TikTok checks it. Second, check Settings and privacy, Account, Account status for a warning on the account. Third, rule out a glitch: during the US data-centre outage of 25 to 27 January 2026, TikTok said creators might temporarily see 0 views and called it a display error. If none of those applies after a day, the problem is the topic, the wording or the video itself, and the checklist above covers each.
Am I shadowbanned on TikTok?
TikTok does not use the word, but it does restrict videos and accounts, and it tells you when it does. Its For You feed Eligibility Standards list the kinds of video that stay up but are not recommended, and since 2023 it has shown creators a Not eligible for recommendation label with the reason and an appeal option. Look at each recent video's status and at your Account status page. If both are clean, your low views have another cause, most often a topic nobody searches for or everybody makes.
Should I delete a video with low views?
No. Reposting the same file gives TikTok a duplicate, which its published standards make ineligible for the For You feed, and it throws away any search views the original would collect later. If the video is under review or caught in a glitch, the repost joins the same queue. Leave it up and fix the cause in the next video. Delete only if the video breaks a rule and you are removing it to clear a restriction.
Do views from search count?
Yes. Search is one of the traffic sources TikTok lists on every video's analytics page, and those views count toward the total like any other. For the Creator Rewards Program, however, TikTok pays only for qualified views, which are For You feed views of more than five seconds from real accounts, so search views do not earn rewards even though they count as views. For growth they are often the best views you get, because a video that ranks keeps collecting them for months.
Does a new account get fewer views?
TikTok's 2020 newsroom post says follower count is not a direct factor in recommendations, and it has not published any rule that new accounts are held back. What is true is that a small account has a small following, and if TikTok now shows a new video to followers first, as marketers reported in late 2025, a new account has almost nobody in that first group. In a September 2026 sample of 58 creators, accounts under 10,000 followers got a median of about 215 plays a post. That is normal for the size, not a penalty.
Why did my views suddenly drop?
Work through the same six checks. A sudden drop across every new video usually points to a label or account warning (step 1), a switch to reposted or watermarked footage (step 6), or a run of topics with little search demand (step 3). Platform-wide drops do happen: TikTok confirmed the January 2026 outage showed creators 0 views, and creators reported another drop around 15 August 2026 in an r/TikTok thread, for which we found no TikTok statement. If your Watched full video share is unchanged and only the view count fell, the video is fine and the distribution changed.
