- TikTok research covers eight kinds of question: search demand, trends, videos, creators, hashtags, sounds, comments and audiences. No single TikTok tool answers all of them.
- Only Creator Search Insights has TikTok's own search counts. It lives in the TikTok app and at tiktok.com/csi, one topic at a time, with no export.
- Third-party tools read public pages: good for videos, likes, followers and comments, but none of them has TikTok's search numbers.
- Worked example: "diy cat tree" had 144,443 searches in 7 days and 724 videos on 30 September 2026, and 14 of 39 comments on the top video said the homemade tree beat the store-bought one.
- No research tool shows another account's private analytics, its follower history or its ad spend. Use TikTok Studio for your own account and Ads Manager for your own ads.
TikTok research means checking what people search, watch, post and say on TikTok before you make or sell something. It covers eight kinds of question: search demand, trends, videos, creators, hashtags, sounds, comments and audiences. No single TikTok tool answers all eight. We ran all eight for one niche on 30 September 2026: "diy cat tree" had 144,443 searches in 7 days and only 724 videos.
Below: 12 research questions, the tools that answer each and the real answer we got that day, then the cat tree question answered end to end, with the number each step produced.

Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights and TikTok search via TokConnect, pulled 30 September 2026. Snapshots: search demand, videos, comments, creators and hashtags, trending.
TikTok's own tools hold the best data, but each shows one slice on one screen. Third-party tools read public pages, so they count videos, likes and followers well, and none has TikTok's search counts.

What TikTok's own research tools cover
TikTok gives away more research data than most people use. It just splits it by audience: creators, advertisers, brands and academics each get their own tool.
- Creator Search Insights is the only place TikTok publishes search demand. Search a topic and you get its searches over the last 7 days, a daily chart, the number of videos TikTok matches to it, a content-gap badge when videos are scarce, and who searched it by age and country. It lives in the TikTok app and at tiktok.com/csi with a TikTok login, one topic at a time, with no export, history view or API (TikTok Help Center; our guide).
- Creative Center is TikTok's free, public home for trends and ad examples: trending hashtags, songs, creators and videos by country, plus Top Ads. TikTok says a login isn't required but recommends one to see all the data (TikTok for Business). It's built for advertisers, so it shows what's popular, not what people search.
- TikTok Studio is analytics for your own account: views, watch time, followers and traffic sources, in the app or at tiktok.com/tiktokstudio. It can't show anyone else's account.
- TikTok One is where brands find and brief creators. It replaced the Creator Marketplace in 2025 (TechCrunch).
- TikTok Insights is a free library of survey research TikTok commissioned among adults, filtered by country, audience and industry (TikTok for Business). Useful for a pitch deck, but it's surveys, not live platform data.
- The Research API gives bulk access to public videos, comments and profiles, but only to approved non-commercial researchers, mainly at universities in the US, Europe, the UK and Switzerland. Our Research API guide covers eligibility and limits.

What third-party TikTok research tools add
Outside TikTok, tools fall into six families. Each is good at one job, and each has its own comparison guide.
- Browser extensions such as TokAudit, which sorts a profile's videos to surface its best performers, and Tik Analyzer, which shows public account and keyword data as you browse. Quick, free, one page at a time.
- Scrapers and research code: Apify's TikTok actors, Bellingcat's open-source hashtag tool, which tracks the topics that appear alongside a hashtag over time, and the Research API client for approved academics. Raw public data; you write the analysis.
- Analytics suites such as Exolyt, Sprout Social and Metricool, for reporting on your own and competitors' public numbers. See TikTok analytics tools and TikTok competitor analysis.
- Keyword tools that harvest TikTok's autocomplete and attach estimated volumes. TikTok SEO tools compared checks where each one's numbers come from.
- TikTok Shop sales tools such as Kalodata, FastMoss and EchoTik, which estimate product sales. TikTok product research pairs them with search demand.
- Trend trackers such as TrendTok. How to find trends on TikTok ranks every trend signal by how early it moves.
Where a TikTok research platform fits
What's missing is the joining up. "Should we sell cat trees on TikTok?" needs search demand, a trend line, top videos, their comments and the creators behind them: five tools and an afternoon of screenshots.
TokConnect puts them behind one question. You ask in plain words at chat.tokconnect.com, it pulls TikTok's Creator Search Insights data plus public videos, creators, hashtags and comments, and the answer shows each number next to where it came from. If you already work in ChatGPT or Claude, the same account works there (ChatGPT setup).

Here is that question, answered step by step so you can check every number.
Worked example: TikTok research for a cat tree brand
The question: a small brand that makes cat trees wants to know whether TikTok has real demand, and what its first videos should be. It took 16 lookups on 30 September 2026. Here is each step and the number it produced.
1. Search demand: 144,443 searches a week
"diy cat tree" had 144,443 searches in the last 7 days and 724 videos. "Cute Cat Tree Ideas" added 83,774 searches with 561 videos. Most of the 40 topics TikTok returned for "cat tree" and "cat toys" were its own topic labels, such as "cat scratching toys and scratchers" at 4,239,779. Read labels as the size of a theme, not as phrases to copy (what the search numbers mean).
2. Trend: steady, not a spike
Over 30 days the weekly count moved between 110,418 and 313,482, with a middle value of 185,218. It ended lower than it started, but with no one-off spike. That's an evergreen search: a good video can keep ranking for it for months.
3. Phrasing: people search for small spaces
TikTok's autocomplete for "cat tree" gave 17 suggestions, including "cat tree house for indoor", "cat tree in bedroom", "cat tree on wall" and "cat tree amazon". Under the top 2026 video, TikTok suggests "Cat Trees For Apartment". The label "cats living in apartments" had 3,493,951 searches and no videos matched. The theme is space.
4. Audience: young women in the US
Of the "diy cat tree" searches TikTok could attribute over 30 days, 62% came from women and 17% from men (21% unknown), 43% from people aged 18 to 24 and 24% from 25 to 34, and 61% from the US.
5. Videos: DIY builds win, and old videos still rank
TikTok returned 11 videos for "diy cat tree". The first is a 46-second build by @blondesigns from September 2023 with 3,074,268 plays and 51,866 saves. The most played is a French space-saving design by @jon4s.creative with 3,820,886. Only 4 of the 11 were posted in 2026; the median video had 143,932 plays and ran 49 seconds. The biggest 2026 video, @cam_asa_ceva's tree built from roadside branches, has 1,200,176 plays and 51,300 shares.
6. Comments: "better than the $300 one"
We read 39 comments on the top video. Fourteen said the homemade tree beat the store-bought one it copied, and the top comment saying so has 22,923 likes. Two mentioned the price of store trees, two asked to buy the creator's version, and one said their cats scratch the twine off. That's a brief in itself: viewers judged cat trees on looks and price.
7. Creators: the brands are tiny, the DIYers aren't
Searching accounts for "cat furniture" returned 10 brand accounts. The biggest, Hepper, has 4,082 followers; most have under 400. Meanwhile @blondesigns has 2,000,000 followers and 47.8M likes, and has a book out on crafting for cats. In this niche, attention sits with DIY creators. See how to find TikTok influencers.
Which creators make DIY cat furniture videos on TikTok? Show their followers, likes and one top video for each.
8. Hashtags and sounds
#cattree has 1.26B lifetime views on 132,861 videos, about 9,492 views per video. #cattrees is smaller but averages 15,315, and #cattreehouse 9,356. TikTok blocked our sound search twice that day, so we read the sound off the biggest 2026 video instead: an original sound, not a trending track. One video isn't a pattern, but it suggests the build carries these videos, not the audio. Use #cattree for reach and #cattrees for the better average.
The answer
Yes, there's steady demand, and the first videos write themselves from the numbers:
- Lead with small spaces. Film a wall-mounted or bedroom tree and say "cat tree for apartment" out loud, on screen and in the caption.
- Show it next to a $300 tree. The comments already made the comparison. Show materials that survive scratching.
- Film the build in about a minute. The three most played videos run 46 to 64 seconds, and assembly answers the "is it worth it" question.
- Pay a DIY creator before growing your own account. A 2,000,000-follower builder has far more reach than all ten brand accounts in the search combined.
- Tag #cattree, #cattrees and #diycattree. Put the search phrase in the caption; it does more than a fourth tag.
I make [your product]. Is there real demand on TikTok, and what should my first videos be?
What TikTok research can't tell you
Every tool on this page, TikTok's included, works from what TikTok makes visible. That leaves four things you'll need elsewhere:
- Private analytics. Watch time, retention and traffic sources exist only in TikTok Studio, and only for your own account.
- Follower history. Follower and like counts are today's figures. Growth over time needs a tool that has been recording the account, like the analytics suites above.
- Ads data. Your own spend and reach live in TikTok Ads Manager. Creative Center's Top Ads shows example ads, not what brands spent, and TokConnect has no ads data.
- Sales. TikTok Shop sales estimates come from Kalodata or FastMoss (compared here).
Two more to read the numbers right: search counts are TikTok's 7-day figure, worldwide unless you pick a country, and a research tool like ours reads a video's caption, stats, hashtags and sound but doesn't watch it.
How we got these numbers
On 30 September 2026 we made 19 lookups against TikTok's Creator Search Insights data and public TikTok search, through TokConnect: three topic searches ("cat tree", "cat toys", "cat trees for apartment"), autocomplete for "cat tree", a 30-day series and audience split for "diy cat tree", one video search (11 videos), one video's details, 39 comments on the top video, 10 accounts for "cat furniture", one creator profile, 9 hashtags, 15 trending topics and the list of trend channels. Sound search failed twice, and two lookups (related searches and TikTok's content suggestions) returned nothing for this topic. Every figure is in the snapshots linked under the table.
Tool descriptions come from TikTok's help pages and each vendor's own pages, checked the same day. For an insights team's view of the same data, see TikTok market research.
Frequently asked questions
What is the TikTok research tool?
There isn't one official tool. TikTok splits its research data across Creator Search Insights (search demand), Creative Center (trends and ads), TikTok Studio (your own analytics) and the Research API (bulk data for approved academics). Third-party tools and research platforms like TokConnect pull these kinds of data together so one question gets one answer. The table above shows which tool answers which question.
How do I find audience insights on TikTok?
For your own followers, open TikTok Studio's analytics in the app or at tiktok.com/tiktokstudio. For the people searching a topic, Creator Search Insights shows an age and country split per topic. On 30 September 2026, 43% of attributed "diy cat tree" searches came from people aged 18 to 24 and 61% from the US. TikTok Insights adds survey research TikTok commissioned, filtered by country and industry.
What is the best analytics tool for TikTok?
It depends on the job. TikTok Studio is the most accurate for your own account and it's free. For competitors' public numbers, Exolyt, Sprout Social or Metricool. For search demand, Creator Search Insights. Our TikTok analytics tools guide sorts every option by job and price.
Is the TikTok Research API free?
Yes, but only for approved non-commercial researchers, mainly at universities in the US, Europe, the UK and Switzerland. Companies, agencies and marketers can't apply. See our Research API guide for eligibility, limits and alternatives.
What is the TikTok product research tool?
Product research on TikTok usually means two tools together: a TikTok Shop sales tool such as Kalodata or FastMoss to see what already sells, and search data from Creator Search Insights to see what people look for before they buy. TikTok product research walks through the method.
How do TikTok Creator Search Insights work?
Search a topic in the TikTok app or at tiktok.com/csi and TikTok shows its searches over the last 7 days, a daily chart, how many videos match it and a content-gap badge when videos are scarce. It's free with a TikTok login but shows one topic at a time, with no export or history. Our Creator Search Insights guide covers every tab.
