How long should a TikTok be? If you want it to rank in search, between 15 seconds and 3 minutes, and the middle of that range is about 40 seconds. We checked 100 videos that TikTok returns for ten everyday searches on 22 September 2026: half were under 41 seconds, about 4 in 10 were a minute or longer, and none was over 6 minutes. Make the video as long as the idea needs, and only worry about crossing one minute if you want to be paid through the Creator Rewards Program.
Below are TikTok's current limits, what TikTok itself has said about length, the lengths of the 100 videos with their saves and views, and a plain answer for each goal: search traffic, saves, Rewards pay and ads.
How long can a TikTok be? The limits in 2026
There are three limits, and they depend on how you post. Recording inside the TikTok app stops at 10 minutes. Uploading a video you filmed elsewhere allows up to 60 minutes. A photo post, the slideshow format, takes up to 35 images.
| How you post | Limit | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Record in the TikTok app camera | Up to 10 minutes | TikTok's Creating videos help pages; confirmed by Sociality.io (3 March 2026) |
| Upload a finished video (phone or desktop) | Up to 60 minutes | TikTok confirmed the 60-minute upload to TechCrunch on 16 May 2024 as a test for a limited group in select markets; 2026 guides list it as the upload limit |
| Photo post (slideshow) | Up to 35 images | TikTok's Photos on TikTok tutorial; AttentionClaw (13 August 2026) |
| Minimum length | TikTok has not published one | The shortest video in our set was 5.0 seconds and had 7.9 million views |
Limits: TikTok Help Center and Newsroom (linked), TechCrunch (16 May 2024), Sociality.io (3 March 2026), AttentionClaw (13 August 2026). TikTok has not published whether the 60-minute upload has reached every account, so if your upload screen stops at 10 minutes, that is why.
The 10-minute in-app limit is the one most people hit. It arrived in 2022. The 60-minute upload started as a test in May 2024, and TikTok said at the time it was for cooking demos, beauty tutorials and lesson plans that need the room.
What TikTok has said about longer videos
TikTok has never published an ideal length. It has published three things that touch on length, and they pull in different directions.
The one-minute rule for pay. The Creator Rewards Program, TikTok's pay scheme, only counts videos longer than one minute. Pay is per 1,000 "qualified views", which TikTok defines as views from the For You feed lasting at least 5 seconds, or views from search lasting at least 30 seconds, on an original video over one minute (How rewards work, Understanding Qualified Views). A 59-second video earns nothing. Photo posts, Duets and Stitches earn nothing either. TikTok's wording is not consistent: its March 2024 announcement says "over a minute long" while its program terms say "at least 1 minute", so treat 60.0 seconds as the edge and give yourself a few seconds of margin.
The horizontal boost. In January 2024 TikTok told some creators that horizontal videos over one minute would get boosted views within 72 hours of posting, and that those extra views would not count toward pay (Tubefilter, 30 January 2024). It was a nudge toward longer, landscape videos. TikTok has not said whether the boost still runs in 2026.
What outside data shows. Buffer studied 1.1 million TikToks in March 2025 and found videos over 60 seconds reached 43.2% more people than videos of 30 to 60 seconds (Buffer, 17 March 2025). That is the strongest public evidence that TikTok gives longer videos more room. Our 100-video check below is far smaller and looks only at videos that already rank in search, and there length made no difference to views, so treat the reach effect as real but not guaranteed for any one video.
The analytics that judge length. Every video's analytics page in TikTok Studio shows "Average watch time" and "Watched full video", the share of viewers who reached the end (Understanding your analytics; wording quoted by Hootsuite, 9 March 2026). These two numbers punish padding. A 20-second video that 60% of people finish looks healthy. The same idea stretched to 65 seconds might keep 15%. Our analytics guide explains how to read them next to each other.
The lengths of 100 videos that rank in TikTok search
To see what length actually ranks, we ran ten searches a normal person types: recipe, workout, skincare routine, budgeting, study tips, cleaning hacks, dog training, small business tips, travel itinerary and makeup tutorial. Each search ran twice, once sorted by relevance (TikTok's default) and once sorted by most liked, asking for 10 results each time. TikTok returned 7 to 10 per search, 166 results in total. 66 videos appeared in both sorts, so the set holds 100 unique videos, posted between May 2022 and September 2026, 69 of them in 2026.
| Length | Relevance sort (84 results) | Most liked sort (82 results) |
|---|---|---|
| Under 15 seconds | 8 (9.5%) | 7 (8.5%) |
| 15 to 30 seconds | 25 (29.8%) | 26 (31.7%) |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 19 (22.6%) | 18 (22.0%) |
| 1 to 3 minutes | 28 (33.3%) | 28 (34.1%) |
| Over 3 minutes | 4 (4.8%) | 3 (3.7%) |
| Median length | 41.3 s | 40.5 s |
| One minute or longer | 38.1% | 37.8% |
Data: TikTok search results via TokConnect, 20 pulls on 22 September 2026. Length is the durationMs field TikTok returns for each video. Open the snapshot.
The two sorts barely differ. Sorting by most liked did not favour short clips or long ones; the median moved by less than a second. The shape is the useful part: two humps, one at 15 to 30 seconds and one at 1 to 3 minutes, with fewer videos in the 30 to 60 second gap between them. Under 15 seconds is rare, and over 3 minutes is rarer.
The longest video in the set was a 5 minute 18 second burger recipe with 1.6 million views. The shortest was a 5-second workout clip with 7.9 million views. The most watched of all 100 was a 17-second taco recipe with 175 million views and 4.5 million saves. Length did not decide any of those results.
None of the 100 results was a photo post. The search tool reports a duration for every result and no photo flag, and every duration was above zero, so if TikTok ranked slideshows for these searches they did not reach the top 10. Our slideshow guide ran the same check on searches where photo posts do rank.
Median length by search: it depends on the topic
The overall median hides the real pattern. Each topic has its own typical length, and it tracks how much there is to show.
| Search | Results (relevance / most liked) | Median, relevance | Median, most liked | Over 60 s, relevance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| workout | 8 / 7 | 16.6 s | 26.4 s | 2 of 8 |
| cleaning hacks | 9 / 8 | 22.8 s | 24.3 s | 1 of 9 |
| dog training | 10 / 10 | 26.6 s | 26.6 s | 4 of 10 |
| travel itinerary | 7 / 8 | 30.5 s | 29.7 s | 2 of 7 |
| makeup tutorial | 8 / 8 | 41.0 s | 41.0 s | 2 of 8 |
| recipe | 10 / 9 | 51.6 s | 35.3 s | 4 of 10 |
| skincare routine | 7 / 7 | 59.6 s | 72.3 s | 3 of 7 |
| budgeting | 8 / 8 | 62.5 s | 51.0 s | 4 of 8 |
| study tips | 7 / 7 | 63.5 s | 65.2 s | 4 of 7 |
| small business tips | 10 / 10 | 70.2 s | 53.4 s | 6 of 10 |
Data: same 20 pulls, 22 September 2026. Medians are of the durationMs field; "over 60 s" counts videos of 60.0 seconds or longer. Snapshot.
Searches where the viewer wants to copy a movement or a trick (workout, cleaning hacks, dog training) rank clips of 17 to 27 seconds. Searches where the viewer wants a plan or an explanation (budgeting, study tips, small business tips) rank videos of about a minute or more. Recipes sit in the middle and split: quick 20-second dishes and 5-minute cook-alongs both rank.
So the first question is not "how long should a TikTok be" but "how long are the videos already ranking for my search". If the top results are all 20 seconds, a 2-minute video is fighting the format people came for.
Do longer TikToks get more saves or more views?
Saves are the clearest sign that a video was useful enough to keep. To compare fairly across big and small videos we count saves per 100 likes. In this set, longer videos did not earn more saves per like. They earned slightly fewer.
| Length (100 unique videos) | Videos | Saves per 100 likes | Median views |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 15 seconds | 8 | 18.9 | 1,405,485 |
| 15 to 30 seconds | 31 | 32.7 | 949,587 |
| 30 to 60 seconds | 23 | 34.4 | 1,809,299 |
| 1 to 3 minutes | 34 | 26.4 | 1,148,710 |
| Over 3 minutes | 4 | 10.2 | 5,078,149 |
| All under 60 s | 62 | 31.9 | 1,280,004 |
| All 60 s or more | 38 | 23.4 | 1,345,962 |
Data: same 20 pulls, 22 September 2026, one row per unique video. Saves per 100 likes is total collectCount divided by total diggCount in the group, times 100. Snapshot.
Videos under a minute collected about 32 saves per 100 likes; videos of a minute or more collected about 23. The 30 to 60 second band did best at 34. Across all 100 videos the link between length and saves per like was weak and slightly negative (a rank correlation of -0.16), and the link between length and views was close to zero (-0.06). Longer videos did not get more views in this set, and they did not get more saves.
What did drive saves was the topic. The nine travel itinerary videos, median length 30 seconds, collected 53 saves per 100 likes, the highest of any search. A 65-second small business video listing simple SEO steps collected 91,538 saves on 87,389 likes, more saves than likes. People save plans and lists, at any length.
The cluster just past one minute
One detail in the data points at a habit. Only 5 of the 100 videos were between 50 and 60 seconds long. 9 were between 60 and 70 seconds. Videos that land a few seconds past the minute are almost twice as common as videos that land a few seconds short of it, which is what you would expect if creators are stretching to cross the Rewards line.
If your idea is a 20-second idea, a 61-second version does not earn more. It needs 1,000 qualified views before it pays anything, and qualified views come from people who stay past 5 seconds on the For You feed. A padded video loses viewers before the point, "Watched full video" drops, and TikTok shows it to fewer people, so it collects fewer qualified views than a tight video would have collected likes. Cross one minute when you have a minute of material: a recipe with steps, a budget walked through, a routine with reasons. Otherwise post the 20-second version and earn from it another way.
How long should a TikTok be, by goal
There is no single number. Pick the goal, then the length follows from the numbers above and the rules TikTok has published.
| Your goal | Length to aim for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Get found in TikTok search | Match the median for your search: 17 to 27 s for how-to tricks, 50 to 70 s for plans and explanations | Ranking videos cluster by topic; the overall median is 41 s |
| Get saves | 15 to 60 seconds, built as a list or plan | Videos under 60 s collected 32 saves per 100 likes against 23 for longer ones; travel itineraries hit 53 |
| Earn from the Creator Rewards Program | Over 60 seconds, with a minute of real material | TikTok only pays on videos longer than one minute; 38% of ranking videos already clear it |
| Run it as an ad | 9 to 34 seconds | TikTok's TopView spec (updated June 2026) allows 5 to 60 s and recommends 9 to 15 s; its small-business tips sheet says 21 to 34 s; auction In-Feed ads accept up to 10 minutes |
| Explain something long | Up to 10 minutes in-app, longer by upload | Only 4 of 100 ranking videos were over 3 minutes, so expect search to favour the shorter version |

Whatever length you pick, the first 3 seconds decide whether anyone sees the rest. Our hooks guide covers the openings that ranking videos actually use, and how to get more views covers what to do once the video is live.
You can run this check for your own topic instead of ours. An AI agent connected to TikTok search can pull the top results, read their lengths and saves, and tell you the length that already works.
Search TikTok for [my topic] and show me the length of the top 20 videos and how their saves compare.

The answer comes back as a table like the ones on this page: each video's length, views, likes and saves, with the median length and which lengths earned the most saves per like. Post at that length, then check "Watched full video" a week later to see whether you held people to the end.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a TikTok be?
Up to 10 minutes if you record inside the TikTok app, and up to 60 minutes if you upload a video you filmed elsewhere. TikTok confirmed the 60-minute upload to TechCrunch in May 2024 as a test for some accounts, and 2026 guides list it as the upload limit, but TikTok has not said it reaches everyone. A photo post takes up to 35 images.
Is 15 seconds too short?
No. The shortest video in our set of 100 ranking videos was 5 seconds long and had 7.9 million views, and the most watched of all 100 was a 17-second recipe with 175 million views. Under 15 seconds is rare among ranking videos (about 1 in 10), and short clips earned fewer saves per like (19 per 100 likes against 33 for 15 to 30 seconds), but they rank and they get watched.
Do longer TikToks get more views?
Across the platform, probably. Buffer's March 2025 study of 1.1 million videos found videos over 60 seconds reached 43% more people than videos of 30 to 60 seconds. Among the 100 videos that rank for our ten searches, length made no difference to views (a rank correlation of -0.06), and longer videos collected fewer saves per like. Longer helps only when the extra seconds are worth watching; TikTok's "Watched full video" figure in your analytics tells you whether they were.
How long should a TikTok be for the Creator Rewards Program?
Longer than one minute. Only original videos over a minute earn qualified views, and a video needs 1,000 qualified views before it pays anything. TikTok's announcement says "over a minute long" and its terms say "at least 1 minute", so leave a few seconds of margin past 60. The full rules are in our Creator Rewards Program guide.
What is the max TikTok upload length?
60 minutes for an uploaded video, on phone or desktop. Recording in the app stops at 10 minutes. If your upload screen stops at 10 minutes, the 60-minute limit has not reached your account; TikTok has not published a rollout schedule.
How long should a slideshow be?
TikTok allows up to 35 images in a photo post. Our slideshow guide measured what ranks, and most ranking slideshows use far fewer than the limit. None of the 100 results in this page's search check was a photo post, so for these ten searches TikTok ranked videos ahead of slideshows. Photo posts also do not earn from the Creator Rewards Program.
