TikTok for B2B works in the categories where buyers already search TikTok for how-to answers, and fails in the ones where they don't. That is a measurable thing, so measure it before you post. We pulled TikTok's own search numbers for 14 B2B categories on 20 September 2026: payroll, bookkeeping, cold email and project management tools each get between 183,944 and 311,131 searches a week and carry a full 30-day history, while CRM, HR and B2B sales return only TikTok-generated clusters with no history behind them.
Then we checked who is searching. In bookkeeping and project management tools, half of the searchers TikTok could classify are 25 or over. In cold email it is one in seven, and the top videos are for students chasing internships. Same platform, opposite answers. Below: the data, a decision rule, and a five-minute way to run the check on your own category.
The honest state of TikTok for B2B
The question gets asked in a founder forum roughly once a month, and the answers are anecdotes pointing both ways. In February 2026 a B2B SaaS founder on r/Entrepreneur asked whether TikTok is worth it for B2B: they were averaging about 1,500 views and 4% engagement per video and could not tell whether any of those viewers were buyers. The most useful reply came from someone who had posted for three months, got 1,000 to 2,000 views a video and zero qualified leads, and concluded that decision makers scroll TikTok in entertainment mode. Their caveat was that it does work for shorter sales cycles and lower price points.
A month earlier, r/SaaS asked whether TikTok organic is still viable for SaaS in 2026. The replies that came from people actually doing it agreed on a formula: it works only when you treat TikTok as a search and education channel, not a feed. One pain, one workflow, one outcome, in 20 to 40 seconds, with a hook that matches the exact term people type into TikTok search.
The same thread has run on r/b2bmarketing ("TikTok for B2B?" in September 2025, "Anyone here actually using TikTok for B2B?" in February 2026), on r/marketing in February 2024 and on r/smallbusiness in January 2026, where B2B owners compared which platforms brought real leads. Read together, they say one consistent thing: the people who got nothing posted brand content into the feed, and the people who got something answered searches.
What none of the threads has is the number that settles it. Whether anyone in your category searches TikTok for the thing you sell is not an opinion. TikTok publishes it.
Search demand for 14 B2B categories, measured
TikTok's Creator Search Insights, in the app and at tiktok.com/csi, shows a search popularity figure for every topic: searches in the last 7 days, worldwide unless you pick a country. We pulled that figure for 14 B2B search terms through TokConnect, taking the best-matching topic for each. Searches is the 7-day global count. Videos is how many videos TikTok has matched to the topic, which is your competition. Popularity is TikTok's 0 to 100 score. The search volume guide covers each in detail.
The fourth column is the one this page adds. TikTok returns two kinds of topic. Real topics have their own history: a jagged 7-day curve and a 30-day series with a number on every day. Generated clusters are built around your search: two nouns joined by "and", a popularity score of 85 to 87, a 7-day curve that climbs from a few thousand to millions, often zero videos. We asked for 30 days of history on the biggest cluster in the table, "CRM meaning and software basics", and got a number on two days out of 31. A cluster's headline figure is TikTok's estimate for a whole category, not evidence that anyone types that phrase, so treat it as a category-level signal and plan on the narrower topics that carry their own history.
| You search | Best-matching topic | Searches, 7 days | Popularity | Videos | History |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| payroll | Payroll | 262,678 | 74 | 922 | Own history, 31 days |
| cold email | Cold emailing | 311,131 | 75 | 455 | Own history, 31 days |
| shopify apps | shopify business | 293,429 | 74 | 1,219 | Own history, 31 days |
| project management app | project management tools | 252,124 | 73 | 651 | Own history, 31 days |
| bookkeeping | BookKeeping | 183,944 | 72 | 1,064 | Own history, 31 days |
| invoice template | invoice template | 103,069 | 70 | 463 | Own topic, jagged 7-day curve |
| linkedin tips | linkedin tips | 94,709 | 69 | 1,101 | Own topic, jagged 7-day curve |
| crm | CRM meaning and software basics | 4,047,213 | 86 | 357 | Generated cluster, zero on 29 of 31 days |
| excel tips | Excel tips tricks and hacks | 3,863,213 | 86 | 517 | Generated cluster |
| ai tools for work | AI tools for work productivity | 3,848,674 | 86 | 461 | Generated cluster |
| b2b sales | business and B2B information | 3,620,713 | 86 | 462 | Generated cluster |
| cybersecurity | cybersecurity and security studies | 3,610,638 | 86 | 728 | Generated cluster |
| notion template | Notion glow up planners and templates | 3,322,467 | 86 | 453 | Generated cluster |
| human resources | human resources management topics | 2,353,635 | 85 | 409 | Generated cluster |
Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 20 September 2026. Global, last 7 days. Topic snapshot, 30-day history snapshot. "hr software" returned no HR topic at all, so the table uses "human resources"; the 30-day check was run on the five topics with their own history plus the CRM cluster, and the remaining rows are classified by the shape of their 7-day curve.
Read the table in two halves. The top seven rows are categories where people type a specific phrase often enough for TikTok to keep a topic for it, and real topics come in families: "how to do payroll" gets 138,913 searches against 651 videos, "what is bookkeeping" 156,115 against 594. Sales has one too, once you stop saying "b2b": "Sales tips" gets 259,170 searches a week against 1,463 videos. The bottom seven rows are categories where all TikTok could hand back was a generated cluster. That does not mean nobody on TikTok cares about CRM software. It means nobody searches for it in a phrase TikTok recognises, which for a search-led strategy is the same thing. The one real CRM topic, "the crm", has 200 searches and zero videos.
The 30-day view for the five real topics
| Topic | Lowest day | Highest day | Daily average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payroll | 125,136 | 512,045 | 303,446 |
| BookKeeping | 148,354 | 566,131 | 297,971 |
| Cold emailing | 0 | 892,254 | 259,041 |
| shopify business | 105,719 | 391,161 | 222,692 |
| project management tools | 1,598 | 345,110 | 164,791 |
Data: TikTok search popularity, 21 August to 20 September 2026, global, 31 daily points per topic. Open the snapshot.
Payroll and bookkeeping never drop below six figures in a month. That is steady demand from people who need to do a task, the kind a how-to video can own for a year. Cold emailing's zero day and 892,254 peak say it spikes, and the age data explains why.
Who is searching: the age split
Demand alone does not answer the founder's question, because a 19-year-old searching "payroll" is learning the job, not buying the software. TikTok's audience panel, pulled over 30 days, splits each topic's searchers by age. The shares below are of the searchers TikTok could classify; the unknown slice is unknown, not a hidden majority of anyone.
| Topic | 4–15 | 16–17 | 18–24 | 25–34 | 35+ | Unknown |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BookKeeping | 1% | 2% | 24% | 33% | 18% | 22% |
| project management tools | 0% | 1% | 26% | 40% | 11% | 22% |
| Payroll | 1% | 4% | 39% | 23% | 8% | 25% |
| shopify business | 2% | 6% | 36% | 18% | 5% | 33% |
| Cold emailing | 3% | 4% | 49% | 9% | 5% | 29% |
Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights audience panel via TokConnect, pulled 20 September 2026, 30-day window. Shares are each bucket divided by the topic's classified total and rounded. Open the snapshot.
The 25-and-over share is the one to watch, because that is where budget holders live. Bookkeeping (51%) and project management tools (51%) are half working-age adults, and project management is the only topic where 25 to 34 is the single largest group. Payroll sits at 31%. Shopify business (23%) and cold emailing (14%) are student-heavy: half of everyone classified for cold emailing is 18 to 24, which matches what ranks for the term. The audience insights guide explains where these panels come from.
Country matters as much as age. 46% of payroll searchers are in the United States. Bookkeeping is 32% Philippines, 28% United States and 16% Brazil, which looks like the offshore bookkeeping workforce learning the trade rather than US owners looking for a bookkeeper. If you sell to US small businesses, payroll's audience fits you and bookkeeping's mostly does not, despite its older profile.
A decision rule
Put the two datasets together and the Reddit debate collapses into three questions.
- Is there demand? Your category has at least one topic with its own history and, as a working threshold, six figures of weekly searches. Payroll, bookkeeping, cold email, project management tools and Shopify pass. CRM, HR, cybersecurity and B2B sales fail: they only return generated clusters.
- Is the intent how-to? The topic wording and the ranking videos are about doing a task, not watching one. "how to do payroll" passes. Payroll as keyboard ASMR does not, and the most-viewed payroll video we found was exactly that, at 3.4 million plays.
- Do price and cycle fit? The Reddit poster who got zero leads was right that this is where TikTok breaks. If a buyer can start a trial from the link in your bio and decide inside a month, the channel can close. If the deal takes a committee and two quarters, TikTok can only start a conversation, and your 25-and-over share tells you how many of the right people are in the room.
Pass all three and treat TikTok as a search and education channel, with the discipline you would give a blog. Fail the first and skip it; you would be posting into a feed with no search intent to catch you. Fail the third and only go if you can measure assisted pipeline, because you will not see direct signups. For self-serve SaaS, the startup playbook runs the demand check on an app category from first search to comment mining.
We pulled the most relevant videos for "payroll" and "cold email". Payroll's were a "how to get into payroll" career series (334,484 plays), a text-post definition of payroll accounting, an Excel salary-sheet tutorial, an HR consultant explaining that payroll is not HR, and the ASMR clip. No payroll vendor appeared. Cold email's three most-played results (402,099, 419,281 and 424,772 plays) were for college students and creative job seekers; the sales-outreach videos got 25,905, 101,328 and 6,685. Snapshot.
What to post if you go: one pain, one workflow, one outcome
The r/SaaS formula is also what TikTok search rewards, so use it literally. Each video answers one search phrase, and the phrase is on screen, in the caption and spoken in the first three seconds.
- One pain. Take it from the topic wording, not your positioning. "How to do payroll" is a pain with 138,913 weekly searches; "streamline your people operations" is a pain with none.
- One workflow. Show the task done start to finish in 20 to 40 seconds. Screen recording beats talking head for software. The Excel salary-sheet tutorial that ranks for payroll is the template: a real sheet, a formula breakdown in the caption, a result on screen.
- One outcome. End on the finished thing and say what it took. Your product can be the tool in the recording; it does not need to be the subject.
Build the list of phrases first. The keyword research method takes one seed like "payroll" through autocomplete and topic search to a ranked list of phrases with their searches and video counts, and the content strategy guide turns that list into a month of videos ordered by demand and competition. Post to the narrower topics: 651 matched videos on "how to do payroll" is competition a clear answer can beat.
Then measure what the r/Entrepreneur founder could not. Views say nothing about buyers; comments do. A payroll tutorial whose comments ask "does this work for contractors" is reaching people who run payroll. One whose comments ask "what certification do I need" is reaching people who want a job doing it.
Do this check for your own category in five minutes
Everything above came from about 30 calls to TikTok's search data, and the same check runs for any category from one message. Replace the bracketed parts and paste it in.
I sell [product] to [buyer] at [price] with a [length] sales cycle. Search TikTok topics for these phrases a buyer would type: [phrase 1], [phrase 2], [phrase 3], [phrase 4], [phrase 5]. For each phrase give me the best-matching topic with its 7-day searches, popularity score and video count, and flag any topic whose 7-day curve climbs from a few thousand to millions with a popularity of 85 or more as a generated cluster. For the topics that are not clusters, pull 30 days of search popularity and the 30-day audience split, and report the 25 to 34 and 35 and over shares of classified searchers plus the top three countries. Then list the ten most relevant videos for my strongest phrase and describe each as tutorial, career, entertainment or vendor. Finish with a yes or no on TikTok as a search channel for this category, and the three phrases I should make videos for first.
If the answer is no, you have saved a quarter of posting. If it is yes, you have your first three videos and the age and country profile of the people who will find them. The idea validation guide runs the same data through a fuller set of checks, and the micro-SaaS ideas list shows twenty categories where it has already been run.
Frequently asked questions
Is TikTok worth it for B2B?
Only in categories where buyers search TikTok for how-to answers, and you can check that in minutes. Payroll (262,678 searches in 7 days), bookkeeping (183,944) and project management tools (252,124) have real search topics with a month of history and an audience that is half 25 or over. CRM and HR return only generated clusters (the one real CRM topic has 200 searches a week), which means almost nobody types a phrase TikTok recognises. Run the check on your category before you commit a quarter of posting.
Are B2B decision makers actually on TikTok?
Some are, and TikTok's audience panel tells you how many per topic. For "project management tools", 25 to 34 is the largest age group at 40% of classified searchers, with another 11% at 35 and over. For "Cold emailing" only 14% are 25 or over and the top videos are for college students. The share varies by topic, so check yours rather than the platform average.
Does TikTok work for SaaS?
It works for SaaS that is sold at a price and cycle a single person can act on, when you treat it as a search and education channel. Founders who reported zero qualified leads on r/Entrepreneur were posting brand content into the feed for long-cycle products. Founders who reported results on r/SaaS answered exact search phrases with one pain, one workflow and one outcome in under 40 seconds. Self-serve SaaS in a category with real search demand is the fit.
How do I know if my B2B category has search demand on TikTok?
Open Creator Search Insights in the TikTok app or at tiktok.com/csi and search the phrase a buyer would type. A real topic shows a jagged 7-day chart and a number on every day of the 30-day view. A generated cluster shows two nouns joined by "and", a popularity score of 85 to 87 and a smooth climb from thousands to millions, with little or no history. Only the first kind is evidence of demand. TokConnect returns the same data as a table so you can check 14 phrases at once.
What kind of B2B content ranks in TikTok search?
Tutorials and explainers that match the search phrase. For "payroll", the relevant results were a how-to-get-into-payroll series, a payroll accounting definition, an Excel salary-sheet tutorial and an HR explainer; no vendor demo ranked. For "cold email", the three most-played results were guides for students and job seekers. Make the video that answers the phrase, show the task on screen, and let your product be the tool in the recording.
How long should I test TikTok before deciding it doesn't work for B2B?
Decide on demand first, not on views. If your category has no real search topic, three months of posting will not create one. If it does, post to the specific phrases for a month and judge by comments, not views: comments asking how to do the task in a business setting mean you are reaching buyers, comments asking what certification to get mean you are reaching job seekers.
