- 31 of 149 comments were questions, complaints or requests for proof (battery life, a pole that won't lock, staged demos). Put the answers in the brief.
A TikTok creative brief template is one page with eleven fields: objective, audience, the search phrases people type, key message, hook options, mandatories, do's and don'ts, deliverables and specs, usage rights, timeline and success metrics. Copy the blank version below, then fill the audience, search, hook and do's-and-don'ts fields from TikTok's own data, not from a guess.
We filled one for a real product, a cordless electric spin scrubber, with data pulled on 30 September 2026. "cordless electric spin scrubber" had 291,287 TikTok searches in 7 days and 0 videos matched to it. The 19 top videos for "electric spin scrubber" had 43,613,247 plays between them. And 22 of 149 comments on the three biggest were about back pain, bending or pregnancy, which is the brief's real audience. It is written for brands, agencies and TikTok Shop sellers who brief creators. Checked 30 September 2026.
What goes in a TikTok creative brief?
Eleven fields, one page. Creators read a page; they skim a deck. Four of the fields should come from TikTok data, because that is where you find out what buyers type, what already ranks and what they still doubt.
| Field | What to write | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Objective | One goal (sales, search views or awareness) and the one number that proves it | You |
| 2. Audience | Who buys, and the problem in their own words | Comments on top videos |
| 3. Search phrases | 3 to 5 typed searches, with 7-day counts where TikTok has them | TikTok search topics and autocomplete |
| 4. Key message | One sentence the viewer should be able to repeat | You, checked against comments |
| 5. Hook options | Three openers the creator can choose from and say their way | How the top-ranking videos open |
| 6. Mandatories | What must be in every video: product shot, disclosure, sound rules, link | You and TikTok's rules |
| 7. Do's and don'ts | The objections to answer on camera, and the claims to avoid | Comments on top videos |
| 8. Deliverables and specs | Number of videos, length, format, drafts, raw footage | TikTok's ad specs |
| 9. Usage rights | Organic only, Spark Ads, or paid use, for how long | You and the contract |
| 10. Timeline | Sample ships, draft due, feedback, post date | You |
| 11. Success metrics | What you will measure at 7 and 28 days | TikTok Studio and Seller Center |
Keep legal terms, payment and the full usage licence in the contract. The brief is for the person holding the phone. If it runs past a page, the creator will film from memory, and memory keeps the product name and loses everything else.

| Field | Your brief |
|---|---|
| Brand and product | Two lines: who you are, the one product this brief is about, the price and where to buy it |
| 1. Objective | Sales / search views / awareness. The number: e.g. Shop orders per video, or share of views from Search at 28 days |
| 2. Audience | Who buys, and two or three things they said in comments, quoted |
| 3. Search phrases | 3 to 5 typed searches with 7-day counts. Say one out loud in the first seconds, put it on screen and in the caption |
| 4. Key message | One sentence. If a viewer remembers one thing, this |
| 5. Hook options | Three openers, each modelled on a top-ranking video. The creator picks one and rewrites it in their voice |
| 6. Mandatories | Product in frame early; the one proof shot; content disclosure turned on; Commercial Music Library or original sound; Shop link or product tag |
| 7. Do's and don'ts | Do: answer the top 2 or 3 commenter questions on camera. Don't: claims you can't show, competitor names, staged results |
| 8. Deliverables and specs | Number of videos, length range, 9:16, shot at 720p or better, number of drafts, raw clips for cutdowns, caption and on-screen text |
| 9. Usage rights | Organic post only / Spark Ads authorisation for N days / paid use in your own ads for N months, and on which platforms |
| 10. Timeline | Sample ship date, draft due, feedback turnaround, post date, Spark Ads code due |
| 11. Success metrics | What you will read at 7 and 28 days, and what counts as good |
| Reference videos | Two or three links to videos that rank for your search phrases today |
Hook options are options, not a script. For full scripts built from ranking videos, use the TikTok script templates; for more opener patterns, the TikTok hooks guide. If you are briefing a whole content plan rather than one campaign, start with the content strategy guide.

What does a filled TikTok creative brief look like?
Here is the research behind a brief for a cordless electric spin scrubber, the long-handled battery brush sold on TikTok Shop and Amazon. Three pulls: what people type, what already ranks, and what viewers say under it.
What people type
Most "topics" TikTok returns for a product are its own generated labels, not searches anyone types. Across three topic searches (spin scrubber, electric scrubber, power scrubber) we got 44 different topics, and 42 were labels such as "electric scrubbers and cleaning brushes" at 4,442,955. Only two were typed searches.
| Typed search | Searches, 7 days | Videos matched | Popularity |
|---|---|---|---|
| cordless electric spin scrubber | 291,287 | 0 | 74 |
| hoto flexi spin scrubber | 163,116 | 257 | 71 |
Data: TikTok Creator Search Insights via TokConnect, pulled 30 September 2026. Searches are TikTok's 7-day global count; videos is the number TikTok matches to the topic. Snapshot with all 44 topics and 30 suggestions.
The first row is a content gap: real demand and no video TikTok files under it. Its daily figure went from 103,731 on the first day of the week to 291,287 on the last. The second row shows buyers also search by brand name, so a brand's own name belongs in the caption.
Autocomplete fills in the rest. The 30 suggestions for "spin scrubber" and "electric spin scrubber" fall into four groups: the room or surface (bathroom, shower, toilet, floors), proof (review, heavy duty), where to buy (amazon, tiktok shop) and "how to use". Those become the search phrases in the brief. The TikTok SEO guide explains why they go in speech, on-screen text and caption.

What the top videos open with
We grouped the 19 top videos for "electric spin scrubber" by how their caption opens, which is the nearest thing to the hook the data shows.
| How the caption opens | Videos | Median plays | Best video |
|---|---|---|---|
| The person and the chore ("8 months pregnant and still…") | 4 | 6,152,546 | 15,356,504 |
| One-line verdict ("Best purchase ever") | 2 | 4,132,865 | 5,230,434 |
| Feature count ("10-in-1", "9-in-1") | 6 | 658,854 | 2,257,485 |
| Hashtags only | 2 | 310,254 | 603,933 |
| Product listing title or shop link | 3 | 3,970 | 7,493 |
| Price deal or guide (one each) | 2 | n/a | 1,145,613 |
Data: TikTok video search via TokConnect, relevance order, pulled 30 September 2026. Snapshot with every caption and our grouping.
Nineteen videos is a small sample, so read the pattern, not the exact medians. Videos that open on a person and their chore beat videos that open on a spec sheet. The two biggest both started with who was cleaning and why it was hard.
Three more things for the brief. Creator size did not cap reach: the third-biggest video, at 5,230,434 plays, came from an account with 4,021 followers. The 9 videos over a million plays ran 21 to 57 seconds, with a median of 29. And only 3 of the 19 were posted in the last 90 days, so the results are old and a fresh video has room.
What commenters say
We read all 149 comments TikTok returned on the three most-played videos and put each in one theme.
The useful part for a brief is not the praise. It is the 31 comments that were questions, complaints or requests for proof:
- How-to questions (11). "What's the battery life like?" had 271 likes. Others asked how to clean the attachments, how to extend the rod, and which soap to use.
- Weak, awkward or broke (14). "the pole doesn't stay locked for me" had 314 likes; "the bristles are so hard" had 161; "if you press hard it stops" had 84.
- Proof on a real mess (6), plus 17 jokes about the demo tub. "Now scrub one that is actually dirty." Viewers read a pre-dirtied new tub as staged.
The audience is in the comments too. The back-pain, bending and pregnancy theme drew 1,135 likes, more than any other theme about the product. "my back is always killing me after cleaning the bathroom" is a better audience line than any demographic. Comments are on the comments snapshot, with commenter names removed.

The filled brief: cordless electric spin scrubber
This is the brief we would send a creator, built from the three pulls above. The fields marked with data come straight from them; the rest are our choices for a TikTok Shop campaign.
| Field | Cordless electric spin scrubber |
|---|---|
| 1. Objective | TikTok Shop orders from creator videos. Secondary: share of views from Search at 28 days, since "cordless electric spin scrubber" has 0 matched videos |
| 2. Audience (comments) | Adults who clean their own bathroom and hate bending: bad backs, pregnancy, anyone who "can't bend over". In their words: "my back is always killing me after cleaning the bathroom" |
| 3. Search phrases (search data) | Say: "cordless electric spin scrubber" (291,287 searches in 7 days, 0 videos). On screen or caption: "electric spin scrubber how to use", "spin scrubber for shower", "spin scrubber review", "spin scrubber heavy duty" |
| 4. Key message | It scrubs the tub so you don't have to kneel, and here is the battery and the pole lock working |
| 5. Hook options (top videos) | A: "My back can't do tub scrubbing anymore, so this does it." B: "Best cleaning thing I've bought this year. Here's a real stain." C: "Everyone says these only work on fake-dirty tubs. This is my shower grout." |
| 6. Mandatories | A real, old stain (hard water, soap scum or grout) on screen in the first 3 seconds; the pole extending and locking; content disclosure on; Commercial Music Library or original sound; Shop product tag |
| 7. Do's and don'ts (comments) | Do: say the battery life, show how to rinse the heads, name the soap, let the brush work without pressing hard. Don't: pre-dirty a clean tub, open on a "10-in-1" list, claim it kills germs or removes mould |
| 8. Deliverables and specs | 2 videos, 25 to 35 seconds, 9:16, shot at 720p or better; one draft round; raw clips for a 15-second cutdown |
| 9. Usage rights | Organic post on the creator's account; Spark Ads authorisation for 30 days; any use in the brand's own ads priced separately in the contract |
| 10. Timeline | Sample ships day 0; draft day 10; feedback within 2 days; post day 14; Spark Ads code sent on posting |
| 11. Success metrics | Shop orders per video; share of views from Search at 28 days; saves per 1,000 plays against the category (median 1.6 across the 19 top videos); how many of the three top questions the video answers |
Data fields: TikTok search topics, autocomplete, video search and comments via TokConnect, pulled 30 September 2026. Searches, videos, comments. Timeline, rights and deliverable counts are example choices.
Notice what the data changed. Without it, this brief would lead with "10-in-1" and a sparkling bathroom. With it, the brief leads with a sore back and a real stain, and it tells the creator to answer the battery and pole questions before viewers ask them. If you are choosing creators for it, the affiliate guide shows how to shortlist them from search.
What specs and rules does TikTok set for brief deliverables?
Put TikTok's own numbers in the specs field, so nobody argues about them later.
| Spec or rule | What TikTok says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Vertical 9:16 recommended, at least 540×960 px; .mp4, .mov, .mpeg, .3gp or .avi; up to 500 MB | In-feed ad specs |
| Length | Up to 10 minutes for standard in-feed ads; no limit for Spark Ads | In-feed ad specs |
| Quality | Shoot at 720p or better, vertical, with sound | Creative best practices |
| Hook | Hook within the first 6 seconds; introduce what the video is about in the first 3 | Creative best practices |
| On-screen text | 5 to 10 words per second when using text | Creative best practices |
| Testing | 3 to 5 different creatives per ad group | Creative best practices |
| Captions | Spark Ads show up to 4 lines of caption | In-feed ad specs |
| Disclosure | Creators must turn on the content disclosure setting for paid posts; undisclosed commercial content may not be eligible for the For You feed | Content disclosure setting |
| Music | Business accounts use the Commercial Music Library, pre-cleared for commercial use | Commercial Music Library |

Spark Ads is how most briefs handle usage rights on TikTok: the creator posts, then sends an authorisation code so the brand can run that post as an ad from the creator's account. TikTok's Spark Ads page says the code's duration can be set to match the campaign, so write the number of days into the brief. The Spark Ads guide covers the steps.
How do you write a brief creators actually follow?
- Give hooks as choices. Three openers, and permission to rewrite. A creator reading your line sounds like an ad; the top two spin scrubber videos sound like people.
- Write the objections as do's. "Show the pole locking" is filmable. "Address product concerns" is not.
- Name the proof shot. One sentence: what must be on screen, and when. Here, a real stain in the first 3 seconds.
- Give search phrases with their numbers. A creator who sees 291,287 searches and 0 videos understands why the phrase must be said out loud.
- Keep money and rights out of the creative page. Commission, fee, Spark Ads days and paid-use terms go in the contract and get one line in the brief.
- Add two reference videos that rank now. Not your old ads; what TikTok shows for the search today.
After the videos go live, report on the same fields you briefed. The TikTok report template has the monthly version.
Do this in TokConnect
The research half of a brief is one question in TokConnect, the TikTok research platform. Ask "Write a TikTok creative brief for a cordless electric spin scrubber from real searches, top videos and comments" and it pulls TikTok's search topics and autocomplete, the top videos with their plays and captions, and the comments under the biggest ones.
When we ran those same checks through TokConnect's tools on 30 September 2026, they returned 44 topics (2 typed searches, led by "cordless electric spin scrubber" at 291,287 searches and 0 videos), 30 autocomplete suggestions, 19 top videos with 43,613,247 plays, and 149 comments that sorted into the ten themes above. That is the audience, search, hook and do's-and-don'ts fields filled in.
What to do next: fill the other seven fields yourself, send the brief with two reference videos, and re-run the search phrases on posting day to see if the gap is still open. TokConnect does not show Shop sales, GMV or ad spend; it shows what people search, watch and say.
Build a creative brief for a cordless spin scrubber from TikTok data: typed searches with 7-day counts, how the top videos open, and the questions commenters ask.
How we got these numbers
On 30 September 2026 we made 12 TokConnect calls against TikTok's data: topic searches for spin scrubber, electric scrubber and power scrubber (20 topics each, 44 unique), autocomplete for spin scrubber and electric spin scrubber (15 each), the top 20 videos for "electric spin scrubber" (19 returned), the first 50 comments on each of the three most-played videos (149 returned), and three creator profiles to check follower counts. Searches are TikTok's 7-day global counts. We sorted captions and comments into themes by hand; the grouping is in the snapshots. Captions stand in for spoken hooks, which the data does not include. Snapshots: searches, videos, comments.
Frequently asked questions
What should a TikTok creative brief include?
Objective, audience, the search phrases people type, key message, hook options, mandatories, do's and don'ts, deliverables and specs, usage rights, timeline and success metrics, on one page. Add two or three reference videos that rank for your search phrases today. Keep payment and the full licence in the contract.
How long should a TikTok creative brief be?
One page. Creators film from what they remember, so every extra page lowers the chance they follow the parts that matter: the proof shot, the search phrase and the disclosure.
Can ChatGPT write a TikTok creative brief?
It can write the structure. On its own it cannot see TikTok's Creator Search Insights counts and cannot reliably pull the videos that rank for a search or their comments, so the audience, search and hook fields become guesses. Connect a TikTok data source such as TokConnect, or paste the research in, and it can fill those fields from real numbers.
What video specs should a TikTok brief ask for?
TikTok recommends vertical 9:16 video shot at 720p or better, with the hook in the first 6 seconds and the point of the video in the first 3. Standard in-feed ads accept up to 500 MB and up to 10 minutes; see TikTok's in-feed ad specs.
Should a TikTok brief include a script?
Give hook options and must-show moments, not a word-for-word script. Creators who read a brand's lines sound like an ad. If you need scripts, see our TikTok script templates.
What is the difference between a UGC brief and a creator brief on TikTok?
A UGC brief is for videos the brand posts or runs as ads, so it needs usage rights and raw footage. A creator brief is for videos posted on the creator's own account, so it needs the disclosure setting and, if you will boost the post, a Spark Ads authorisation period. The template on this page covers both.
