These numbers come from TikTok's own search data, checked on 30 September 2026. We ran ten challenge searches, from "challenge" and "tiktok challenge" to "family challenge" and "75 hard", and kept only the phrases people actually typed.

That filter matters here. Of 194 challenge topics TikTok returned, 168 were labels TikTok writes itself, like "For You Page challenges" at 4,776,010. Most lists of TikTok challenges still show old favourites like Don't Rush. This one shows what people look up now.

75 Hard shows up several ways. Besides "75 hard" itself, people typed "75 hard journal" (170,217), "day 75 hard" (114,811), "75 hard planning" (69,293) and "75 hard meaning" (49,275). Together that makes it the biggest challenge on the list.

TikTok's autocomplete agrees. For "tiktok challenge" it suggests "TikTok Challenges With Friends", "tiktok challenges 2 people" and "tiktok challenge games" (suggestions snapshot).

Which challenges are rising and which are fading?

  • Rising: "try not to laugh noise challenge" climbed from 1,500 searches on day one to 72,607. The singing version more than doubled (+112%), and "this or that food challenge" did too (+106%).
  • Brand new this week: "couples arm challenge", "couple acting challenge", "30 day walking challenge" and "who's the most challenge" all started the week near zero.
  • Fading: "family challenge ideas" fell 43% across the week and the opera version of try-not-to-laugh fell 25%. Both are still in the top eight.

A week hides the bigger shape, so we pulled 30 days for the top three. "this or that food challenge" is a second wave. It spiked on 31 August, when TikTok's daily figure hit 11,330,023, fell back within a week, rose again around 13 to 15 September and has run between 49,196 and 511,747 a day since 18 September. "try not to laugh singing challenge" never spiked like that: it runs steadily with short jumps on 10 and 21 September. "30 day walking challenge" pulses on and off every few days, the pattern of a goal people restart rather than a trend that burns out. And as the food challenge shows, a challenge that already spiked can come back.

Line chart of TikTok's daily search figure from 30 August to 29 September 2026. This or that food challenge spikes to 11.3 million on 31 August, drops below 1 million by 5 September, rises to about 2.1 million around 13 to 15 September, then runs between about 49,000 and 512,000 a day. Try not to laugh singing challenge stays mostly between 85,000 and 300,000, with jumps to about 710,000 on 10 September and 1.2 million on 21 September.

Challenges people search for that have no videos yet

Six searches in our pull had real demand and zero matched videos. TikTok calls this a content gap: a video that matches the search has almost nothing to compete with. See this week's content gaps for every niche.

Search data shows demand, not the rules, so search the phrase on TikTok before you film and copy the format people expect. Or ask TokConnect "what challenges are trending in pet care this week?" and you get the searches, the video counts and the gaps for your own niche.

Why most "challenge" topics on TikTok are labels

If you open Creator Search Insights and search "challenge", you'll see numbers in the millions: "prank call challenge ideas" at 4,747,524 or "The Sims challenge ideas and rules" at 4,808,618. Nobody typed those word for word. They are topic labels TikTok writes to group many related searches.

You can spot them by their shape: around 10,000 on day one, then up every day to 4 or 5 million on day seven. All 20 topics for "challenge ideas" were labels, and 73 of the 168 labels had no videos at all. One, "quick edits for viral challenge videos", sits at 122,695,060. Read that as the size of a category, not a challenge anyone is doing.

Typed searches look messier. "what am i challenge" went 36,403, then 500, then 0, then back up to 46,104. That jagged line is how you know people are behind it. Our guide to TikTok search volume explains how to read both kinds.

What the top challenge videos have in common

We pulled the 12 videos TikTok ranks first for "this or that food challenge". Every one is a choose-one game: two foods, you pick, next pair. Eleven of the 12 captions use #thisorthat, and most name the pair in the caption, like "Hot vs Cold" or "Sweet vs Spicy". Lengths run from 22 to 82 seconds, with a middle value of about 60.

The biggest is an "eat or pass" game with 2,542,597 plays. A "Hot vs Cold" version posted on 23 September already had 2,112,998 plays a week later, so a new entry can still take off. The same accounts come up again and again: one has three of the 12 results, another has two.

The wider "challenge" search tells the same story. Its most-liked results are games a viewer can play along with: families racing each other ("Should we try again!?", 1,376,986 plays), reaction tests, food games. No skill needed.

Challenge hashtags: how crowded are they?

HashtagLifetime viewsVideos
#challenge953.5 billion62,044,375
#challenges35.1 billion2,540,140
#challenger16.1 billion1,241,699
#challengetiktok4.7 billion395,621

Data: TikTok hashtag search, 30 September 2026. Views and videos are lifetime totals for the tag. Snapshot.

#challenge sits on about 62 million videos, so a new video tagged with it gets lost. #challenger is partly the Dodge car (TikTok suggests "challenger dodge"). Use the name of the specific challenge instead, like #thisorthat or "30 day walking challenge", in the caption, on screen and out loud. Our TikTok SEO guide covers where each goes.

How to join a TikTok challenge and get found

  1. Pick from the searches, not the feed. A challenge with real searches and few videos gets you found by people looking for it. That goes for brands too: an existing challenge that fits your product beats a new hashtag nobody knows.
  2. Say the exact name in the first seconds. "This is the couple acting challenge." Put the same words on screen.
  3. Copy the format, change the content. The this-or-that videos all use the same structure. What differs is the pair of foods. Keep the frame and swap in your niche: skincare, gym, books.
  4. Ask for a reply. The top videos ask the viewer something ("Who wins?", "What's your score?"). That turns views into comments. See our hooks guide for openers that work.

Are TikTok challenges safe? What parents should know

Most are harmless: the list above is games, couples and 30-day goals. A few have been dangerous over the years. When someone searches for a harmful challenge or hoax, TikTok shows a warning label and points them to its Safety Center, and it blocks searches that break its Community Guidelines (TikTok Newsroom, 17 November 2021). In a survey TikTok commissioned from more than 10,000 teens, parents and teachers, 0.3% of teens said they had taken part in a challenge they saw as very dangerous (Tubefilter, 17 November 2021).

TikTok's advice for teens is four steps: stop, think, decide, act. Pause, ask whether it is safe and kind, and don't do it if it isn't (FOSI, February 2022; TikTok's online challenges page). None of this week's typed challenge searches pointed at a risky stunt, and we don't embed videos with children in risky situations.

How we got these numbers

On 30 September 2026 we ran 10 challenge searches through TikTok's Creator Search Insights data (194 unique topics), plus 30-day lines for the top three, the top videos for "this or that food challenge" and "challenge", the hashtags and autocomplete. A topic counts as a TikTok label if its searches rose every day to over a million, or topped 5 million. "Searches" is TikTok's 7-day global figure, not monthly. The data comes from Creator Search Insights, in the TikTok app and at tiktok.com/csi. More weekly lists are on our trends page.

Frequently asked questions

What are the current TikTok challenges?

In TikTok's search data for the week to 30 September 2026, the most searched challenges were the try not to laugh singing challenge (295,729 searches in 7 days), the 30 day walking challenge (293,688), the this or that food challenge (269,073), the couples arm challenge (263,720), the couple acting challenge (258,722) and 75 Hard (244,075). Dance challenges are tracked on the dances page.

What is the most popular TikTok challenge right now?

By single search, the try not to laugh singing challenge, with 295,729 searches in 7 days. Counted together, 75 Hard is bigger: "75 hard", "75 hard journal", "day 75 hard", "75 hard planning" and "75 hard meaning" add up to 647,671 searches in the same week.

What TikTok challenges can you do with friends?

TikTok's own autocomplete suggests "TikTok Challenges With Friends" and "tiktok challenges 2 people". From this week's searches, try the this or that food challenge, the who's the most challenge, the what am i challenge or the try not to laugh challenges. The couple acting and couples arm challenges work for two people and had no videos matched yet.

What are some TikTok challenge ideas?

Start from what people search, not from a blank page. This week's list is mostly games (this or that, try not to laugh, who's the most), couples challenges and 30-day goals like walking. Keep a format people know and change the content to fit your niche, for example a this-or-that round for skincare or books.

How do you start a challenge on TikTok?

Give it a short name, show the whole thing in one video, and say the name out loud, on screen and in the caption so people can search it. Make it easy to copy and end by asking viewers to try it or reply. A new name has no searches yet, so joining a challenge that already has demand is the faster way to get found.

Are TikTok challenges dangerous?

Most are harmless games and goals. A few have been dangerous. TikTok shows a warning and points people to its Safety Center when they search for harmful challenges or hoaxes, and it teaches teens to stop, think, decide and act before joining one. In a 2021 survey TikTok commissioned, 0.3% of teens said they had done a challenge they saw as very dangerous.
